The US GRANT, a Luxury Collection Hotel in San Diego, garners praise for its impeccably clean rooms and luxurious atmosphere, with many guests impressed by the spacious and spotless bathrooms. While the hotel's location is a point of contention, with some finding it ideal and others considering it too remote, the service quality also receives mixed feedback—some commend the attentive staff, whereas others face unprofessional service. Amenities are generally appreciated, though the value is questioned due to high costs and billing discrepancies. Rooms divide opinion; renovations are welcomed by some, while others lament outdated decor and noise.

Although I didn't give the US Grant Hotel 5 stars it is truely AMAZING. I must caveat I went with a toddler and with that in mind, I may not book it again if I was with a toddler, but would 100000% book it again if I came without a toddler.

First, the entire concierge staff were incredible and went above and beyond anything I expected (from a US Marriott anyway). The location is extremely convenient and the hotel itself oozes class and character. The rooms are beautiful - I was in a standard king room and the walls were paneled!

As a Platinum member, the breakfast at the Grant Grill which was also amazing.

Now onto the bad stuff. Again, I must mention this is because I traveled with a toddler so may not apply to every ready.

1. There are very few rooms with tubs and I was not fortunate enough to get one of those rooms.
2. The bathroom doesn't blackout so if you are in a standard room and use to putting the toddler asleep in a separate room, this is not really an option if your toddler is sensitive to light.
3. There was significant construction across the street as of Feb 2020 and if you are on a lower floor, you can hear the trucks early in the morning.

Again, I would recommend this hotel to everyone travelling without a toddler in a heartbeat but would warn parents if there is a toddler.

The hotel does a very good job in providing nice accommodations in a classic setting. Focusing first on the postive. The US Grant is "grandest" hotel in the city: a historic building superbly located on Horton Plaza Park within minutes of everthing in the city center. First, the positive: It has a terrific staff; everyone from concierge to bellman to housekeepers could not have been more professional. We had a small suite that was quite nice and very well maintained. The property owners have done a great job in maintaining the hotel's physical plant. It does not show its age. We dined at the Grill and had an excellent meal at a very acceptable price. Why not a five? First, Marriott's branding has become overly complicated and not terribly helpful. (I confess that we don't stay at Marriott properties that often, so maybe their frequent guests might take a different view.) The US Grant is listed among their "luxury" properties. It is a very nice hotel, but "luxurious"? Some of their properties in other categories are actually much nicer. It is just confusing. Second, and I confess this is a pet peave of mine. It is by definition not fine dining if males are wearing baseball caps in the diniing room. The hotel tries admirably to convey a sense of history and class. Tennis shoes and baseball caps torpedo the effort.

I wish there was a 4.5 as this hotel is great minus a few small details, but I'm comparing it to the top hotels that I've stayed at. I would stay here again. But to start with the negative first:
1. I wish they would have a water dispenser as an option or as an only option than just bottled water in the gym. I'm not a crazy environmentalist but I think this would be a great idea for the environment.
2. I arrived at 9am which is super early and did not expect a room to be ready. And it wasn't, but we booked 2 rooms so we had requested connecting rooms at booking. Which could not be guaranteed and I understand that, and we were not able to get one. A little disappointing especially with our early arrival. Anyways, went to explore but i did tell Abel (the front desk guy) that if one of the rooms was available I would take it as we have a toddler that could be useful for nap. Came back for noon for lunch at the restaurant which was great (great kids meal, especially the fish...we have 4 kids younger than 7) and asked if the room was ready and it wasn't. Which is acceptable, said maybe another 15 mins and that Abel would call my cell. Finished lunch at 130pm and decided to check in with front desk, now with a lady and she said both my rooms were ready (no phone call, like earlier indicated, especially since i did say we have young children). Last hiccup was that at check in Abel did say I could do 4pm check out as part of my booking (which is so great with this hotel), but my car was demagnitized at noon.

Off to the positives: this is a great hotel, beautiful with great rooms....highly recommend. Brooks the concierge is unbelievable, best one I've ever encountered and Ive stayed at like 20 Fairmonts. Great attitude, you can tell he takes pride in what he does and is just a great guy. I was worried reading reviews about the homeless nearby, they are north of this building in the train track area, but if you stay south you won't see it and it did not bother us one bit. For the price, for the location, for the quality this is a great place....highly recommend.

This historic hotel is not in a great surrounding location but is walkable to the central rowdy night street of the Gaslamp quarters. A lot of abandon old buildings and homeless on the streets,. Typical of a downtown vibe in the US. It’s within walking distance of the convention center and Seaport Village.

The hotel room beds are comfortable. The interior decor is classy and nice. The shower has good water pressure. They offer prepackaged ice, which is an excellent idea for those who carry portable water coolers.

The cleanliness of the room and the hotel are both ok. Exterior Windows lack washing and are caked up with layers of dirt and dust. Making room views are not great. Layers of dust on the bed board, window sills, and other areas.

The room amenities are typical. Nothing was noted beyond what you would find at any other hotels like the Westin, Embassy Suites, or Courtyard.

Customer services, Valet parking services, and all other interactions with hotel staff are excellent. They are all very nice and polite, especially in the dining area where they can get close to you to discuss the menu items. However, increasingly, not all staff wore a mask in the middle of a Covid delta variant case.

We checked in today. I never write a bad review but I had to for this one. I reserved this hotel based on other reviews but it could be that we are in the middle of Covid-19 and I pay more attention to sanitation. We got here for a two day get away for my kids. I first sanitized all the places that my kids could touch and I got grossed out with the phone, and the the AC controller as well as the door knob. Then I noticed a big stain on the bed curtain, probably pee from a dog that they didn’t even bother to change. My phone fell accidentally behind the fridge container I picked it up with lots of dust and had hair on. I went to open the curtains to get some light the dust from the curtains came to the room not mentioning all the windows were extremely dirty on the outside. I would never come back here.

A local in for a couple’s staycation, thrilled to be staying in the most historic and beautiful hotel in the city. From valet to the front desk, mask and social distancing signs abound, as should be in the current state of things. Everything was perfect (the self-guided historical tour is great) and I was so happy to be in the hotel built by the son of a former US President and dedicated to his father, Ulysses S Grant. That gesture, which still honors his father to this day, is the most amazing gift from son to father. He is honored so much that a beautiful portrait of the late President, commissioned by his son, greets all that arrive through the valet entrance. Except there is an addition: a piece of fabric over the namesake’s face; a gesture, I suppose, to let the guest know the hotel is covid-safe and that even Presidents can slow the spread. To me, however, it is a denigration to not only the namesake of the hotel, but to its history. And before you say, “C’mon man, it’s just a cute gesture that we’ll all in this together”, I ask you: with all of the signs rightfully put in the hotel encouraging mask-wearing and social distancing, why is this necessary? Five stars, nonetheless.

We have stayed at the US Grant a couple of times before and been delighted, and we recommended a night here with a friend on the basis of previous visits. The first thing to say is that the immediate neighbourhood is very unpleasant and has deteriorated significantly. Our suite overlooked a seemingly derelict property covered in graffiti. There are literally dozens of homeless people and drug users all around, including some walking through the valet reception area. It was far from pleasant walking to a local restaurant at night. We arrived just after 4pm to be told that the two Legacy suites we had booked were not ready but would be just a few minutes. 4pm is the check in time. We eventually got to our room at 5pm, but with no luggage. We had to go to reception twice to chase up the luggage. We'd had a very early start that morning and needed a rest and a shower, and this was not a good start to our stay. The excuses were that the hotel was usually at "full occupancy", but that is no excuse, nor is "we are very busy today" and that "we are short-staffed", excuses offered by different members of staff. The Legacy suite was far smaller that we expected or is shown on the hotel's own website, with barely enough room to walk around the bed on one side. The bathroom was small and dated, and as many previous guests have commented you have to lean into the shower to turn the water on, causing you to get drenched with cold water before it runs hot. The seating area was fine but nothing special. One real positive was the comfort of the beds; they were excellent. When we went to breakfast we were given a brunch menu, and didn't really think too much about it until we ate lunch there and were presented with the same menu. Outside the Grill there were clearly separate breakfast and lunch menus, and even the lady on reception had no idea what was going on. At lunchtime one of us ordered a seranno ham and cheese sandwich with fries, and a breafast sandwich of an omelete with potatoes arrived. Then a bowl of fries arrived on their own, then a replacement sandwich which was the same omelette concontion again. Finally, when two of us had finished our meals the correct sandwich arrived. This was not acceptable. Furthermore while we were eating the staff were mopping the floor and generally cleaning up - not very professional. On the plus side all the staff were extremely friendly and helpful, and we did receive a deduction to the room cost plus a credit towards food or drinks. This was much appreciated but our experience meant that we will not be staying again, not can we recommend it to anyone else. It most certainly is not a luxury hotel. The room costs are high and then putting a cost of over $18 for internet access is outrageous, particularly when you can get public access in the lobby areas. In rating the service I have given an average rating. The service by the staff was overall very good, but the service quality of the hotel was poor, hence an average rating.

This is a very old hotel that has been remodeled many times. The result is that they only can do so much with the limited space in the guest rooms. We had a "suite" that had a very small bathroom with little to no room to put your personal items. You had to actually step into the shower to turn on the faucet and experience the initial flow of cold water!
The foyer and community spaces are all quite nice and the staff are exceptional. The on site restaurant is very pricey and the food is mediocre.
There are more reasonable priced and better rooms available elsewhere in San Diego.

This hotel is upscale and deserves at least 4-stars for the amenities, service, quality, and Gaslamp location.

The room was sizable for a downtown location with comfortable beds, ample closet space, a roomy bathroom and a quality desk facing the window. I appreciated the turned down bed and mat on the floor when arriving later in the evening.

The breakfast was very good, though they were running behind when they opened at 7AM with several people lined up by that hour and ready to eat. Maybe consider opening at 6:30AM?

The gym had everything I needed.

The lobby had a very luxurious feel, which is in keeping with the hotel’s name.

I was able to walk to highly recommend eateries, making the location great. There is a homeless problem in the area, but it wasn’t like I felt unsafe and it’s not the hotel’s fault.

Parking was at a premium, which is pretty typical for downtown hotels, but $57/night for valet is still too steep.

Extra shout out to management and the front desk for letting me check out a day early without a fee. Business wrapped up sooner than expected, so I decided I would try to fly home early and the staff accommodated my checkout without a fee request.

We stayed at the Grant last night as our friend had a birthday party there. We had a deluxe room, which was nicely decorated, with an ample beautifully tiled shower but single sink. Linens were also very nice. The US Grant is over 100 years old and listed on the Historic Register, thus there were undoubtedly limits on what could be done in the redo. The Grant Grill (separately reviewed - we had breakfast there) is dark, but booths are cosy. As we live in San Diego, we had driven to the hotel, and valeted our car overnight - VERY PRICEY at $49! The only recompense was that our breakfast was free due to our Marriott status. Public areas are also redecorated and spacious. Aside from the outrageous valet fee, cost was reasonable and the hotel was very comfortable.

In our suite there was a mini fridge BUT was not designed or cold enough to keep food only drinks which was a bit odd. There was a plaque on the mini fridge stating this. There was a coffee maker of sorts but we never use them so I paid little to no attention to this. On another note the hotels brewed coffee was excellent in my opinion.
