We enjoyed our stay at the Sandman on Davie for a long Thanksgiving weekend.

The lobby has signs saying it is a mandatory face mask area but 80% of the clients wear a mask and not all the staff wear masks at all time or properly (did not cover their nose).

The staff was nice and helpful. There's no housekeeping so I just advised when our trash was in the hallway so they could pick it up. Depending on the time of day, if you don't call, then no one comes to the floor to pick it up.

The one bedroom, queen suite with partial view was on the 5th floor and had view of the hotel’s parking and a limited view of Davie Street. The balcony enclosure is open so caution is required for kids.

The suite was generally clean but the carpet still had crumbs on it so because of COVID we decided to clean and disinfect everything, just to be safe.

The kitchen had a decent size refrigerator, microwave, toaster, and dishwasher. There were also four of everything – all utensils, dishes, glasses, and bowls, one cooking pot, baking pan, and a roasting pan. No frying pan, which we could have used.

The suite didn’t have a renovated bathroom as in the photos nor did it have a desk, which would have been great but it did have a bigger dresser.

FYI - the hotel room doors slam close and are noisy when your neighbours leave. Not sure why it was like that but it's not great for light sleepers. Also, rooms start on the 4th floor so I would try to get a higher floor next time and definitely not east facing as the view on the lower floors is mainly of a parking lot.

Overall, the Sandman offers a great location, good service, and comfortable stay.

These suites have all the amenities you could need for a very reasonable price. Was impressed to see a dishwasher, cabinets stocked with kitchen supplies, and a washer/dryer combo. You can’t beat the city view from the balcony either! Will stay here again for sure!

I stayed here one night last minute after I couldn’t stay at the Best Western in N Van(terrible).
Pros- staff was very nice. The room was nice. The rooms have been renovated. Bed was comfortable. There was a fridge and microwave and sitting area. It faces Davie St so I had a bit of a view of English Bay.
Cons- when I went to have a shower there was hair on the wall.
The fan for the bathroom did not work so the hotel room and windows full of steam.
Windows are original so single pane
I asked for a corporate rate but the online rate was $10 cheaper and they would not change it when I checked out.
Still it is a good location and even with $20 for parking it came to $143 a night which is reasonable for the West End of Vancouver.

As a long time Vancouver local, I absolutely vouch for this property. After a non essential trip abroad, I had to quarentene for 14 days after returning. When I called the Sandman to inquire about rates, I was happy to find out through Rocky, (front office manager) that they actually offer a quarentene rate that was within my budget. This has truly proven to be a great stay, the rooms here are actual apartment units, all equipped with full kitchens, and in-suite laundry, perfect for those who are quarantining.

The folks here at the Sandman truly care about their guests and that is clearly transpired through out your stay. I will absolutely come back and stay here again whenever I can, and I’ll will recommend this place and their fantastic staff to everyone I know.

I am currently still at Davie street sandman. I stayed for 8 days from the UK on business, 5 of which were with my wife.

Our suite was a great size, larger than most I looked at when booking. The bedroom is compact but has a huge wardrobe and drawers. Plus as you have a good sized lounge with a kitchen there is no necessity for a huge bedroom. The bed was comfortable, all amenities worked and the view was nice.

The location of this hotel is perfect, walking distance to most necessary things, a 1km walk from the underground to the airport and 1.5km from the opposite waterfront. Shops, bars and restaurants aplenty nearby.

The noise reported by others was not an issue at all for us, we were on floor 10 with a city view, yes there is some traffic noise and the occasional siren but that is to be expected in a large city centre

The lift issues people have reported again we did not experience, naturally they didn't arrive instantaneously but we barely waited any time for them.

The staff were lovely, we didn't have much interaction with them because we keep ourselves to ourselves but when we did they were great.

The restaurant/bar that is part of the hotel, sells reasonably priced food and drinks and shows the sports so was pretty good.

Overall I think this hotel was perfect for our needs as a base in Vancouver to work and play. I highly recommend.

We stayed here on Friday night after staying at the Sandman tower property in Kelowna the night before. The staff was amazing and really on the ball. It's the first time we stayed at this property, which is located in a fantastic area, close to great restaurants.

The hotel check-in process was very clearly laid out so that you did not have to touch anything. They have serious protocols in place with all of their staff wearing masks, behind barriers and notices around the property about their sanitizing process.

Our room was very clean, as was the rest of the property. You can tell the management at this hotel has taken the time to put a lot of thought into their program. We saw a similar structure at the Kelowna hotel that we stayed at, so it's clear that this chain has reacted to the COVID-19 issue quite quickly.

We will be back to this hotel, just based on the great service that we received and because of the care and attention they are clearly going above and beyond in these crazy times. We are checking out today, but we hate to leave our ocean view suite and return to Alberta!

We stayed here in July 2021 and again in August 2021. I want to say that I also don’t think we are that picky but when this is our family “vacation” and it being rather pricey, I felt I had to say something.

In July, we had a pretty unfavourable experience where we didn’t get the room we reserved because they oversold the hotel. Instead of telling me at the desk, they sent us to a room and I called the front desk when we got there and explained it wasn’t what we had asked/paid for. She told me then they oversold the hotel and that if we were ok there, and as they didn’t have another room to move us to, they would pay for our parking. I agreed. The room was dirty and dated and we were by the elevator that sounded like a sky train going down the tracks so our sleep was disturbed at all hours of the night. Although the room was dirty, the linens were clean and fresh and the bed and pillows were comfortable. The staff was friendly and did the best they could. The manager also reduced our bill further and offered a free upgrade the next time we were to visit.

We decided to try again and give them a second chance. We were “upgraded” to basically the same room we were in before but it was in an even worse state than the last one (see pictures). I didn’t even bother to say anything this time because it just seems like it wouldn’t have mattered. I am not a complainer as I don’t enjoy a confrontation and to me, if you had a note in your computer about upgrading a customer due to a bad experience previously, you, as a company should be pro-active and at least make sure the room we are going into is clean. We also asked for more towels in our room as the pool never had clean towels unless you got there first thing in the morning, but they just never came. When asked at checkout, I did mention the issues we had and was basically told that they would pay for my parking again and thanks for staying.

I feel like that at $387 a night, I expected a lot more and was disappointed. Maybe I’m out of touch. I don’t ask for much but felt like I received very little.

Positives - clean and comfy beds, clean linens, great location, friendly staff, tasty restaurant

Sam Gray wrote a review Jul 2021
My husband and I stayed here for a night with our 2 year old daughter. The room we were given when we first checked in had an overpowering scent of old cigarette smoke and was extremely outdated. After asking the front desk to change our room due to the smell they moved us to a room higher up, without any upgrade or apology for the inconvenience. They just told me none of the rooms should smell of smoke. The new room we got, all the electrical outlet covers were broken in half which is a safety hazard, and also just looks like the hotel doesn’t keep up on any maintenance. The rooms have wall paper from the 90s and clearly haven’t been updated in years. For $200/night I would think the room would be somewhat updated and at the least have replaced plastic electrical covers. The furniture was old and ripped.

On top of all this the elevator took a minimum of 5 minutes in the evening.

The pool was the only positive part of our stay.

Overall would never stay here again. Can definitely find a hotel within the same price range and location that has been updated.

Very disappointed. The suite photos are photoshopped & the suite is in desperate need of renovations. The wall paper was stained & peeling, the appliances are cheap and outdated. They advertise in-suite washer/ dryer (which is a combo unit, DIRTY & takes forever. There were holes in the walls, the carpet & sofa were filthy, overall very dirty, there was painted over mold on the bathroom door & overall the suite was grungy. We complained to the GM (Rockey-who had exceptional CS & was as helpful as he could be) & were told they would do a deep clean, so we packed up everything (have a 4 yr old & baby), & they didn’t come and do a deep clean. They didn’t even take out the garbages. Don’t stay here.

We have stayed at the Sandman Suites for years and years. We have always appreciated its' location in the heart of Vancouver in the vibrant Davie Street neighbourhood.
But this hotel is showing its' age and is wearing down. It is dilapidated and is in desperate need of some attention. The last few times we have had various problems with our room but we overlooked them as the hotel holds a special place for us. However, this past stay has us questioning whether or not we should continue to stay as the ownership clearly has no intention on improving things.
Since our arrival, the toilet has been plugged. When I alerted the front desk, I was told that there weren't any housekeeping staff to fix it and a plunger was eventually dropped off at our door. We have been plunging that toilet for three days with zero help from the hotel staff. I just placed a call to the front desk as it was seriously plugged now (8:30pm). The gal at the front desk said she would send someone up tomorrow. I told her that was going to be quite challenging as there are three of us in the room and it will be impossible for three adults to not use the toilet for 14 hours. We were offered nothing but an apology. :(
The only reason I have given two stars is because it has an incredible location.
The wifi is brutal. The TV is small with a very limited number of channels (only basic cable). The elevators are ancient and sound like they could break down at any moment. Our dresser is missing pieces.
The hotel is sad and pathetic. The lobby is the most impressive part. Beyond that...it goes downhill fast.
