This was a lovely stay except for a couple of issues. The hotel is intimate, being a bit smallish. I like that aspect, since I firmly believe that means more personal touches and customer service. In that regard, I wasn’t disappointed. That said, I think it might be a better fit for business visitors as opposed to families. Twice while I was there I overheard complaints both BY parents (nothing for their kids to do or eat…more on the dining options later), and by business people complaining about the noise caused by bored kids running up and down the hallways. I also got a bit of that noise but was able to drown it out, except for in the main entry sitting areas. While I was at the bar area. I could see a ton of kids running around wildly and one even fell flat on his face, having slipped on the shiny tile floors. The people sitting nearest the “play area” were really annoyed by it but, oddly, the front desk didn’t try to restrict any of that behavior, even though it might have resulted in a child getting hurt. I’d recommend the hotel consider coming up with a fair but firmly enforced policy about those things since, there didn’t seem to be any other place for kids to play or work off some energy (no “grounds” or green spaces; only parking lot), but neither should they be OK knowing kids can run around unchecked and unsupervised. It also became quite obvious to me that maids prop open some of the normally closed emergency exit doors open while they are working, presumably for cool air, and there were kids coming and going from one of those doors also, running into the busy parking lot between two hotels! I would think that should concern management for more than one reason. Aside from the noise of the bored kids-gone-wild and possible underage safety concern that I have, the hotel is quite comfortable…nice linens and amenities. It has a small but well-appointed gym, a small pool area; very cute but not large by any means. The evening meal I had in the lounge was PHENOMENAL! I had the salmon, and the guy I had struck up a conversation with had the tacos (fish, I think), and he was also raving about his food. Everything was fresh and perfectly prepared. I was so disappointed to hear that the kitchen is closed at breakfast (no matter what the website says), as I would love to have seen what the chef could whip up for a nice gourmet breakfast! There was only a small walk up deli counter on premises for breakfast. It was fine for me (it’s all about the cappuccino!) but as I mentioned, the parents didn’t seem particularly pleased with the selection available. It was convenient, however, since it is connected to the hotel itself through a hallway near the elevators. The entire staff was helpful and friendly, especially the bartender lady. So, my visit was overwhelmingly positive and I would return and also would recommend the hotel to business visitors.

As far as the doors being propped open, this is something that our management team is diligently focused on to stop this habit of our staff. This hotel is amazing & the staff made it even better! I stayed here with my husband for two nights from Friday - Sunday. Chris kindly checked us in & made it easy and accommodating to help make our stay very comfortable. Not to mention he was very informative I didn’t even have any questions afterwards. The team I encountered here knew hospitality down to a T! I think the location is great too if you’re thinking of staying in the city but don’t want to be surrounded by all of the chaos. What I really loved was the scheduled room service I thought that was nice since I like to lay around all day sometimes just to find a peace of mind. No one knocked on my door the whole time I was there yet everyone was so attentive when I needed something or had any questions. The cleanliness of the room was honestly impeccable especially during this pandemic it really made me feel better about staying at a hotel while pregnant... in the middle of a virus! Haha needless to say if you’re looking for a calm, tranquil hotel with good food that’s located in Del Mar then I think this chain of hotels is what you’re looking for. Never stayed at a hotel that was so versatile to work with the guest. Stephanie also was ABSOLUTELY helpful just like Chris! They were both so very kind to my husband & I. I’m thankful for them! Thanks guys I’m hoping to be staying with you guys soon again for another get away! Stephanie is always very helpful and goes the extra mile for her guests :) A definite 5 stars!

Overall great experience! The hotel manager and staff make this place great. The food is excellent (try the fish tacos and the breakfast is a hybrid of offering a freshly cooked dish as well as access to the typical buffet) and fairly priced. The bar tender was very attentive and able to juggle a lot of people and requests. I had some issues with my reservation and it was reconciled above and beyond my expectations. Location is close to I-5.

Our stay at the Hilton Garden Inn Del Mar was very good quality for money. The room was nice and clean and the beds were comfortable. Water pressure in the shower was great and we liked that we had a small fridge available. On arrival we were offered waters which we also appreciated. The breakfast was hot which was very nice during Covid when so many places are not doing cooked breakfast. Staff were welcoming and friendly. The hotel is conveniently located to attractions around San Diego. I would recommend this as a good place to stay when traveling in the area.

I made my reservation for this hotel to arrive December 30. When I went to check in I was greeted by a sign that says that they closed December 7 and my reservation was moved to the Homewood Suites next door. I made my reservations well after they closed. They are putting guests up in the hotel next-door which is Homewood suites. To say the least I was very disappointed and upset. I could not move hotels because I was financially unprepared to do so. I was told emails went out and I was very adamant that I did not receive anything. I checked all emails from Hilton since making my reservation. What I did receive the night before were check in instructions for the Hilton Garden instead of the Homewood suites next-door. Everybody has their favorite brand and has expectations so certainly this was not my expectation to be greeted by dark hotel with a sign on it to go next-door. I checked reservations on booking sites and they’re still showing the Hilton Garden open which is not true. It needs to be corrected so people will not have an experience like mine. Now I see why people were in the parking lot on their phones because they were checking for other reservations and probably calling Hilton to figure out what the heck happened. This is not good business!

Jenai, I am terribly sorry that you were unable to stay with us at our Hilton Garden Inn. A California "stay at home order" was issued and business dropped to near zero in December. I personally talked to Hilton and began filling out the forms to close our hotel through the reservation system. It is a huge decision and based on the short duration of the order, we felt it prudent to not shut all systems down. Our Homewood Suites is in the same parking lot as I am sure you noticed. You are the first and only complaint that got to me. I will be reopening as soon as possible and we thank you for your understanding--I am always available to talk to our guests as I office at the Hilton Garden Inn daily. Thank you! We stayed here for 3 nights. We asked for our room to be cleaned twice and they only brought towels and shampoo. Sink was plugged and very annoying. Need to go to another hotel next door for breakfast. Breakfast was nothing worth mentioning.

We provide a full clean by request every 4th day due to rising COVID cases. This policy is meant to protect both the guests and our staff. Family became sick. Found black mold in bathroom and due to no ventilation could not get it removed. Hotel staff was nice and provided extra support; however the hotel room we were in could have used an extra scrub down to get the mold removed.

We have stayed at the HGI Del Mar at least a dozen times in the past. This stay, a total of eight nights, was the last. The hotel has taken a nosedive in every way. We arrived to a blistering hot room with a disabled cooling system. The receptionist at the desk was indifferent and dishonest when she represented that a repair person was "on the way." He was not. we tracked him down ourselves. The people at the desk gave different answers as to where the ice machines were located. and when we finally found them, they were not working. There was no interest on the part of the front desk staff in being helpful or cordial. When we called for assistance, our calls were never answered. There seemed to be no management and no manager.
Our room lacked a desk light, which is part of the general furnishing. The toilet did not flush properly. There was no extra blanket, and, worst of all, our room was never cleaned during our stay. We were told to leave our garbage in the hall, as we saw others had done.
We were drawn to the hotel in the past partly because of the breakfast service. This no longer exists. Instead, we were sent next door to Homewood Suites. The buffet there was very limited and unappetizing.
We are Hilton Honors members who booked well in advance. We learned after check-in that rooms were not cleaned daily and that there is a twelve-dollar daily parking fee.
Due to Covid, we had not visited the hotel in the last two years. Whatever happened in the interim was nothing short of a complete qualitative descent.

The worst representation of a Hilton property.

No room cleaning until you have stayed 4 nights - disgusting!

No restaurant - you must walk to the sister property Homewood Suites nearby to get the free breakfast - which is horrible and not healthy.

The front desk staff leaves a sign that "we'll be right back" and disappears for long periods of time.

Reservation promised free parking but they tell you it's $12 per night when you check in.

Fire alarm in early morning houses on both nights of stay.

Rude, disinterested staff ("muscles" and others)

Bill, I was so sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your stay. I'd like to respond to each of your comments - one, if you would like room cleaning during the first 3 days, we do require you to ask. Most guests are fine with this. Two, we do have two restaurants, a deli and our Bistro 39. Yes, for breakfast, we ask you to walk to our Homewood Suites by Hilton immediately adjacent, 25 steps away. I am sorry you did not like our food there but you are an exception. On the rest, you are absolutely correct. There is no place for rudeness in our industry, we were understaffed due to an employee illness and our fire alarm did go off twice. I am surprised about the reservation that says free parking but our $12 charge is the lowest in the market. If our team has not had a discussion with you, we will be in touch. This Hotel is in the Best location for people who want to enjoy the beaches, shopping and dining. I have to point out that the staff is 5 stars..Tina Young went beyond her way to make me feel at home. She knew I had to work between the hours of 12 midnight till 4 am and she gave me a peaceful quiet area to work.. also to mention she made fresh coffee for me so I can stay up!! Thank you!! Two other employees I want to mention are Samantha and one of the managers named Marcus!! Top top top .. they exceeded my expectations and I can only recommend this hotel in San Diego. I have been in San Diego since May and have been traveling all over looking for real estate and this Hotel out of the 10 I stayed at is far most the best!! Thank you!! I will be back.
