I stayed at Downtown Paraiso Hostel between 11/16/07 and 11/23/07. This hostel was a bargain for the price and had an excellent location in the El Ravel section of Barcelona, a few blocks away from Las Ramblas.

I stayed in a 4 bedroom mixed dorm that had a sink, 4 bunkbeds and a balcony. There were lockers in the room but they were small (too small to fit a big travel backpack). The walls were thin and you could hear other rooms inside the hostel, this really was not much of a problem and the people staying here were courteous. The hostel has 4 bathrooms, 3 of them with showers. There is a small communal kitchen and a small entertainment area with TV/DVD. There was one communal computer, this did have technical problems during part of my stay, but it really did not bother me. The hostel also has VoIP phone that you can make international calls on, the per minute charge was reasonable for this service. The hostel staff was all in their 20’s, every one of them were helpful with getting information on attractions, tours, and bars/restaurants.

The El Ravel section of Barcelona is a little bit gritty but it really was not too bad. There are some really good bars in the area, if you are familiar with Lower East Side (New York City) then you would have an idea of what El Ravel is like. Besides that, the hostel is a 5 minute walk from Las Ramblas and the Liceu Metro station (green L3 line) so it is very convenient to just about anywhere in the city (even to go to Monserrat). Barcelona has one of the best run transit systems I have ever been on; get a T-10 pass which is good for 10 one way trips and you will easily be able to get to any other part of the city you need to. My other recommendation is to go on the Bus Tursitic, run by the cities tourism council – get the two day pass, it is a great way to see all of the city and get your bearings in the first couple of days.

The location really is excellent and if you are looking to see the sight on the cheap, I would highly recommend it. Barcelona is like any big city, you need to be street-smart and careful – this is not hard to do and you should definitely enjoy your time there.

We have just spent 5 nights in Barcelona at the Downtown Hostel.

Location is great, close to la Rambla, la Boqueria and the Old Hospital de la Santa Creu.
Shared bathroom, well equipped kitchen, a nice terrace to have breakfast / meal.
No street noise but wall are thin and some noise from corridors or other rooms can be heard.

If you don't expect luxury, but a rest point, I do recommend the Downtown Hostel.

Just be aware - 20 euro deposit, 2 euro per towel.

To get things started, let me explain who I am. I am a 21 year old solo female traveler. I have been to 14 countries and counting. I have stayed in friends homes, apartments, hotels (3 stars and up), hostels, and B&B's. I really liked my time at this hostel because it has an excellent location and dinner was FREE every night! Yes, you heard me! There is a flyer on the community board that directs you to ask the reception desk for a dinner voucher to go to the Travel Bar and get a good, hot meal. You are entailed to as many dinner vouchers as you like. The only catch if that you have to pay for your drinks and it is only accepted between 7pm-9pm (all f this is written clearly on the voucher). It is very close by and I really enjoyed my time at this bar. One of their branches has excellent happy hour specials so you can hang out for happy hour (5pm-7pm) and then enjoy a free meal! There are free walking tours that leave daily from this bar as well; which I suggest you take advantage of because the guide I had was well informed and friendly.
The location is perfect because it is a few minutes off La Rambala so you are away from the loud, tourist trap center. The street which you walk to take you to La Rambala has a metro stop at the corner to take you all around the city as well, in case you want to go visit Park Güell and Sagrada (do it). You can walk to the beach without a problem and you have a food market right next door to the hostel, so you can pick up cheap meals here. The breakfast deal served here is AMAZING! SO delicious and cheap. There are very few restaurants in the Barcelona city center that are not rip offs. Besides the food market, I only found two good restaurants (both in food quality, quantity, and price) thanks to some friends I made who are locals. But there are many quick places to grab a bite to eat that are fairly priced if you look hard enough.
In addition, the room itself was not that memorable. There was just a double bed, a sink, a mirror above it, a wardrobe, and a nightstand. It was pretty small but had a window (to the interior space between the buildings- which is common in Europe). The bathrooms were very clean and there were so many of them! It was a good value for all that was included and the location is perfect. I would definitely come here again!

I stayed here for 4 nights. I had an overall pleasant stay with no major complaints. The room was clean, quiet and comfortable. Everything was kept clean, and the staff were very friendly and full of local information. The hostel is in a nice quiet neighborhood, but close to many turist's spots - it's about a 15 minute walk to the Ramblas, to say. Lots of events and activities if you're interested. The price It's the best value when you compare it to hotel prices in the same area. Highly recommended!

I stayed in a two person room with my brother for three days of a week-long stay in August. The hostel's location was excellent, but it was difficult to find when we arrived at night, as it is up a flight of steps in what looks like a normal building. The staff were friendly and helpful, but our room was awful. It had precious little ventilation, no fan whatsoever, so the only way of allowing any air into the room was through opening the window. This meant that lots of mosquitoes were able to enter the room, and the room was still absolutely sweltering at night, yet no fan was provided. Every morning, the room stank of sweat due to the cramped and stuffy nature of the room and the heat. Aside from the awful room, this hostel was good - internet access, pleasant terrace, nice guests and friendly staff, but it was nonetheless an incredibly unpleasant experience.

I stayed in a 2-person private room in this hostel for a long weekend visit to Barcelona with my mother. It was quite difficult to find despite having printed a map, as it is on 1 floor of a shared building. However the decor is vibrant and inviting and the staff incredibly helpful (giving us a map of Barcelona and circling everything we might want to do, and arranging discounted tickets for a Flamenco show). We were upgraded to a room with a private bathroom, which was very handy as I don't think there were many toilets and showers between the shared rooms/dorms. The room was very small and basic, but clean and had everything you need for a short stay. The bathroom was cleaned each day and the towels replaced once during our 3 night stay. The only negatives were the uncomfortable pillows and the window that only faced a very close adjacent wall, allowing virtually no natural light into the room, you'd wake up in the night/ morning with absolutely no clue of the time of day! Overall, for the incredibly cheap price the hostel is everything that is required and in a perfect central location to the main areas of Barcelona.

Had a beautiful stay here! Really lovely and kind staff! They all spoke good english and were more than happy to show us nice places to eat and drink and even websites to check the events in the city (butxaca.com!). Super clean rooms and kitchen. Simply the best hostel I have stayed, it is centric - about 2 blocks from La Rambla and the metro Liceu. I recommend it!

I loved this hostel! When you enter it, you fill in with lot of positive energy! The receptionists were very friendly and helpful. It was clean and it had a lot of charm. I really recommend this hostel! It's less than 5 minutes from La Rambla. I have not a single bad word for it!

Stay here if you can.

Downtown Paraiso is a very nice hostel. The rooms are really nice and the whole atmosphere of the place is great. I had a two bed private room and found the room spacious, the linens clean, and the beds comfortable. The shared bathrooms were nice and there seemed to never be a wait which was great. There is a kitchen and common area both inside and out which is great for socializing with other travelers. I would definitely say this place caters to a younger crowd, but if you are down with that, its great.

The location of the hostel has to be the best part. It is right off of Las Ramblas which means there are tons of restaurants, shops, open markets, and bars within a 5 minute walk of the hostel. The beach is about 10 minutes down Las Ramblas as well and it is easy to get anywhere you are going. The train is also about 3-4 minutes from the hostel which is great. Its easy to get anywhere from here and the neighborhood is a perfect place to stay if you want to experience all of the fun and liveliness Barcelona has to offer.

I really loved this hostel and only gave it 4 out of 5 because at the end of the day, it is a hostel so its a no frills kind of experience. I would recommend this place, and have, to anyone.

"Stayed in rooms 105, 101 and 106. Room 105, the natural light was from a light well, no view therefore but was airy enough with an en-suite shower room. Room 101 had a balcony and a view of the street which was nice but noisy, no en-suite. Room 106 again the natural light came from a light well, no view therefore, but this time I found the room stuffy despite the fan - again no en-suite."
