Detailed Reviews

I stayed five nights on my own in a double room in May 2018.

Arrival

This hotel is, as advertised, not in the city centre but four metro stops away. I arrived by air, took the Aero link coach from the airport to Catalunya square and the metro from there to Vallcarca. At Vallcarca take the exit on your right and a long escalator takes you half way up the hill. Carry on walking uphill till you get to the bridge, cross the bridge and the hotel is to your left (If you are not good at an incline with your suitcases take a taxi from Catalunya square for your first journey).

The Room

The room I found to be both clean and comfortable. The air con worked and was quiet, and the shower was powerful and responded well to the easy to use heating controls. There were several conveniently placed electric sockets (useful for my new travel kettle which bubbled discreetly…there is no provision for tea or coffee making in the rooms). The curtains were effective in blacking out all light which I prefer for sleeping. Lots of storage space. The TV channels (in English anyway) were mostly limited to 24-hour news outlets with endless news of Mr Trump and Mr Putin but I was not in Barcelona to watch TV. The room was visited and tidied by housekeeping daily.

The Environment

There was one evening when noisy neighbours woke me in the early hours but thankfully they had a quick row and stopped talking to each other, otherwise good for sleeping. My room (430 on the 4th floor) overlooked a side street that was busy and noisy during the day but quiet at night. No local bars or restaurants that I saw but the city centre is in easy reach by metro. I did not eat and meals at the hotel or use the swimming pool so cannot comment on those aspects.

Other

In addition to the restaurant and bar there are 24-hour food and snack dispensing units in the lobby. I didn’t use the front desk much but when I asked any odd question I got a polite and accurate answer.
I booked through bookings.com with an option to cancel – on arrival my card had been charged for the first night and the rate for the remainder of my stay was as offered at the time of booking so that all seemed reasonable.

Suggested improvements: Tea and coffee in rooms and perhaps more variety in TV channels to unwind to

I have prattled on a bit but in summary a good hotel and I would stay here again.

Worst hotel in the world. This is the dirtiest hotel that exist. I will never be going. Expensive food. Dirty. Dirty. We will never go back. The pool is very small and I don't even know when it was last cleaned.

We stayed at Catalonia Park Guell 4 nights in May 2015. We arrived early, but were able to leave our luggage at the reseption and use the time before check-in BY exploring Barcelona. The room was spacious enough and was equipped with all the necessary accessories, including a matrimonial bed, a luminous bathroom and a huge tv. It had also a wonderful view to the mountains and the Tibidabo hill! Many reviews have complained about the noise, but we slept very well although our room was situated right above the street and the window was left open during various nights. The only time I could hear noises from other rooms was in the bathroom, but it didn't bother either of us at all. The room was cleaned and the towels were changed daily.

The location is absolutely perfect! We didn't have breakfast, but near the hotel there were various bakeries where you could buy delicious and extremely cheap croissants, sandwiches etc. The hotel is located very close to a beautiful park Creueta del Coll, where we enjoyed our breakfast on various mornings. The metro is about 300m downhill from the hotel and we didn't find it difficult to find at all. That could be because we had done a little bit of research before the trip, as the majority of the writers of these reviews should've done. I don't understand how can the fact that 1. this hotel is situated outside the central area, and 2. this hotel is situated up the hill, come as a surprise to anyone? Don't you do any research before travelling at all? Like, at all?

The pool area was cozy and clean, and the pool definitely wasn't a "bath tub", but a fair-sized rooftop pool. The water was quite cold, but during the hot summer days it's just a positive thing, I imagine. Oh, and the views were just crazy! The only downside is that the pool doesn't open until 10am, it would be nice to have a morning swim before starting the day's program.

All in all this hotel is a very nice and fairly priced place to stay in Barcelona. We really enjoyed our time there!

Visited Barcelona in June 2014, stayed in Catalonia Park Guell for 4 nights, and got mixed feelings about it. The price was low and location is very good, 7-10 min walk from the metro station Vallcarca from which you can get to the city center without changing lines. The furniture in the room is pretty old, and a/c certainly needs to be updated, too noisy, we had to turn it off because it wouldnt let us sleep at night! It was manageable in early June, but could be a problem in July and August I assume when it's hotter outside. The bathroom was very good, a bathtub, huge sink and even a bidet which is rare for a 3 star hotel in Europe. The rooftop pool looks bigger in the pictures than it really is but the view is really nice from up there. Cant comment on breakfasts cause we didnt have them. Theres a bar and internet corner on the ground floor. The staff were helpful and polite.
Overall, it's an ok place to stay in for a few days if you spend most of the day exploring the city and use the hotel just for sleeping.

This is an ok-ish place - the staff are friendly (and if you at least try to use just a few simple Spanish words - like hola & gracias! it makes a big difference. Safe, clean, straightforward rooms, no views, but outside is so amazing why sit in your room?

For me the giggest thing AGAINST this place is that it is such a climb up from the metro (watch out which exit you use at the metro too, it makes a BIG difference - exit straight right). As you arrive at Metro Vallcarca exhausted from your day's sightseeing you are suddenly faced with some serious hill climbing (and with a suitcase it is no fun!).
And when the metro is closed definitely get a taxi. Also, the lifts in the hotel are iffy; 1 broken & 1 broke down while I was there and after the hill walking, up to the 6th floor is tough on the knees. But at least it keeps your backside in trim! HOWEVER, you are a few minutes (hill) walking from Park Guell which for Gaudi lovers is the great thing about stopping here. I'd stay there again.

My husband and I stayed here as part of the travel package to Spain. The hotel itself was fine – we had a great view of the hill and it was basic and clean; that plus free wifi was all we needed. The staff was very nice and helpful. The breakfast was fine – nothing special, but it was also a buffet so you can’t really expect too much anyways. The metro was close and it was a quick ride to the city (it was also about 7 to 10 euros for a cab ride back from Las Ramblas). The only issue we had was the noise -- the walls are very thin, but for the most part, everyone was pretty considerate on their noise level except the first night, which had to have been the last night of a school group.

Our favorite part of the entire hotel was the rooftop pool at the 6th floor. It was March and still cold (even though it was unseasonably warm, it was not warm enough), but I wanted to see the pool anyways. We got up there and were amazed on how nice it was (and shocking compared to our room). We ended up spending two hours relaxing with a glass of wine (and him – a cigar) and watching the sunset and the view. It was a perfect ending to our trip!

FYI – using the metro: When you arrive to the Vallcarca exit, go to the doors to the right and take the long escalator up. When you get to the top, look behind you and you will see a bridge. You need to head towards that, turn right onto it, and go along that bridge until you reach a small traffic circle. You will see a sign that says Mare de Deu del Coll pointing up and you will follow up that one more block up to the hotel. My husband and I made the mistake of going to the shorter set of stairs and went a long backwards way through the neighborhood when we arrived. It was not a fun walk!

The Catalonia Rubens Hotel was NOT centrally located and was pretty far removed from the main area in Barcelona, which is the La Rambla area. The hotel was actually further up north in an area called Vallcarca. There was luckily a metro stop that could get me into the city, but it's about a 10 minute walk (up and down hill) to the metro station and not a convenient mode of transport on weeknights after the metro would shut down between 11pm-midnight (make sure to check the schedule!) The staff at the hotel, especially one dark - haired/brunette lady, was not friendly and not very helpful when I asked her about tours, or even things in the area. (She just guessed or assumed and gave me the wrong time that a tour office would close and I missed booking the tour.) When I asked a man at the front desk to show me on the map which way to walk to something, I verified the direction with him twice, but he had sent me the wrong way. Also, I was given a room where the toilet was not working and when I addressed the issue I was told it would be taken care of. Then I left the room for a few hours and came back at about 10pm, only to find that the toilet was STILL not working. I told the hotel staff about it again and a young man from the front desk walked up to my room with me and took a look at it, but then I was told I would have to wait until morning to have the toilet fixed. When I complained and asked for another room, I was informed that there were none available - and the guy said this without even knowing or checking at the desk. Then I raised a ruckus and FINALLY got a room (but it was smaller) with a working toilet. The bathroom was old and cracks were apparent here and there. Then - to add to the fun (NOT!) - on 2 days in a row I found bugs crawling out of the bathroom drain into the tub. YUCK! Another problem was that in the new room the phone was not working and I complained about it 4 times until someone FINALLY came to take a look at it. On the fourth time I marched down to the front desk and told the dark haired lady about it, only to be answered with, "...if you really need to use the phone then you can see we have a phone booth over there," and proceeded to point towards a wall opposite the desk. I told her that was not the point. The point was that I paid for a room with basic amenities included - and that would mean a working phone as well. She didn't say anything back to me at that point, but just went back to whatever she was doing. As a final blow, she couldn't check me out of the room correctly. It was a pre-booked room and she kept insisting she needed the credit card I booked it with. The problem was that I did not have that credit card as it was booked for me by a relative. After about 10 minutes of struggling with her on the issue, I decided to call the relative whose credit card it was and have him read the credit card information to me over the phone and hoped that the lady at the front desk would be able to type it in directly. She said no at first, but then I just asked a man who was at the desk behind her and he said it shouldn't be a problem. So that was that and as the final icing on the cake, that brunette woman had done one thing right (called a taxi to take me to the airport), BUT because of her issues on checking me out the taxi started charging me so I ended up paying 15 Euros more than I should have to get to the airport by taxi. Barcelona was nice, but this hotel just totally ruined the experience for me. Please do yourself a favor and DON'T STAY AT THE CATALONIA RUBENS HOTEL!

We went for a week-end trip from Denmark to Barcelona, and we have found this hotel on the internet, because we want to stay near Parc Güell.
The hotel was good, the breakfast very very good, and the staff friendly - but the noise!!!
There were quit many school classes, and they were so noisy, so the last day at 22.30 we got out of bed, and asked for another room!! We could not sleep.
We got another room on the 5 floor, and it was okay. But it is not okay, when you have to pick all your things together late at night and move.It was simply not possible for the staff to keep the hotel quit.
But anyway, very nice hotel, very nice price, just ask for a room far away from school classes!

Everyone on the staff was very friendly and helpful at this hotel this past June, 2004. However, the room was very cramped and a little run down compared to other hotels of the same category. The walls were also very thin. We did have a wonderful view of Tibidabo amusement park. However, that also meant we had the street noise. We are both very fit people so we didn't mind the hike to get up to the hotel from the Vallcarca metro station. However, if you are not fit, take a cab w/your luggage or after a long day sight seeing. The surprise of the stay was the phenomenal breakfast! It was one of the best during our 2 weeks in various hotels in Catalonia. Also, if you like hiking, Guell Park is just up the hill from the hotel!
