This was my second time at the Resort. Obviusly, my expectations were incredible as we had an amazing experience the first time we visited. There were amazing moments, but other not so pleasant.

Let me start with the good things.

1. The water and snorkeling are great, despite the sargassum.

2. This is a great place for family trips. Its family oriented. It was nice to see different animal species: iguanas, tapirs, racoons, cats, lots of hermit crabs, birds, even a coati.

3. The food and the services at the specialty restaurants are amazing, especially at the Mexican restaurant. The staff Toribio, Concepcion, Jose Luis, Arturo, Ingrit and Yenifer always went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable and to accomodate our gluten free requests. They were very knowledgeable and always had a smile on their faces. Definitely an A+ service.

4. Big shout out to Guadalupe working the pool area.

5. Carmen, who cleaned our room, was amazing too.

6. They have self laundry service, which is great and they charge $3 for 3 loads.

The not so good things:

1. The terrible communication. After we booked our stay (45 days before) we emailed the hotel inquiring about something as simple as sand toys. They never replied to any of those emails.

1.1 We booked a 2 bed suite. They gave us a 1 king size bed instead. We asked if we could be moved to a place with 2 beds (we were 3 people) they said no, and brought a single bed, whose mattress was old and as thick as a noodle.

2. Booking the airport transfers was a disaster. We tried to book it 3 weeks before our stay through the hotel's company. We received a link to pay that was good for 48 hours only. The payment wasn't processed due to an error on the invoice's information. We emailed the person who sent us the email but didn't hear back from him. 2-3 days later, I called the hotel, and they said, well the person who sent you the link is on vacation, but they were ready to help me. They indeed helped me out but the fact that they didn't answer the email to let us know the staff member was on vacation and that somene else was to assist us is not helpful. There was no initiative by the staff to solve the issue, we had to call several times to schedule the shuttle.

3. Some of the staff at the buffet was rude. Most of them were great people but, lets say that if you need water or coffee and your server is not around, you have to wait until your waiter comes even if there is another server walking by to who you ask for some water. If it's not their table, they dont take care of you. Another thing, the person making smoothies turned us down when we asked for ice to be added to the smoothie. He told us to go get it somewhere else because he was doing something else. There was a pitcher in front of him full of iced water.

4. Food at the buffet was meh. It tasted like leftovers.

5. The sushi bar. Slowest service ever but people are very nice.

6. Front desk charges $3 extra per day as "tax" to clean the beach. This expense is not disclosed when you book the room. Worst thing is that the beach is not cleaned. The hotel next door does a much better job at cleaning the beach.

7. Watch out if you are a spanish speaking person. The service provided by some servers (the guy running the bar in the palapa, for example) to foreign people is much better. This was confirmed by our shuttle driver. He expressly told us that servers don't like to serve spanish speaking people because they "dont leave tips". This is a terrible assumption because they judge you based on the language they actually speak.

8. The transfers are not done by the hotel itself. They are outsourced to a different company. The owner, Ivonne, was very attentive and helpful. She was there on time, picking us up at the airport. My only issue was that she was on the phone, texting, calling, sending voice messages, while she was driving.

Overall, ABB&WR is a great option; however, the quality if everything has gone down in the last 6 years.

My husband and I are here for a work trip with 130 other Canadians. We are taking up about 1/3 of the Resort. It is not at capacity but seems pretty full. However, the resort is built to handle that amount of people. There are plenty of covered cabanas either beside the main pool, by the smaller infinity pools in front of each building and on the beach. There are also plenty of beach chairs. The Resort is medium sized and it takes up a long stretch of water front. All the units have ocean views, & jacuzzis on the balcony which is a lovely way to star gaze at night. There are 4 buildings, 1 & 2 are near the main pool, and main bar area which has live music every night. I am not staying in one of those buildings but can imagine it's a bit noisy if you want to go to sleep earlier. Buildings 3 & 4 are a 2-4 minute walk and are much quieter. You can stay by your building as there are smaller pools, a beach bar and hammocks. There were two days where we waited over an hour for new pool towels, so grab them when you see them!

There is one large buffet and 4 restaurants - Brazilian steak house (a lot of meat - don't finished the steak entree if you want to try the other 5-6 meats that come to your table after that!), the Japanese/Peruvian fusion (is that really a thing?) where the sushi and ceviche is delicious but the miso soup is very salty, the Mexican & fine dining (men need pants and closed toed shoes) French restaurant that we didn't try. There is also a sushi bar open from 11-6 and snack bar open 24 hrs. There is a small bar fridge that the stock daily with two Heinekens, coke, Diet Coke, sprite, water, bubbly water, a bag of plain chips and a Milky Way. I have to say my favourite food was getting a custom omelette made to order by Aurora every morning who was the happiest and friendliest person at the Resort. She cracks eggs with one handed perfection and starts your day off with a smile.

There are lots of activities at the Resort to enjoy. You can snorkel right off the beach and see turtles, sting rays and fish. Walk 3 minutes down the beach last Secrets and find even better snorkeling. Our resort doesn't rent fins because of bad swimmers that stand on the reef and destroy it. However, we had ours from home and could swim with them without issue. My favourite activity was learning how to paddle board with German. There are beginner classes and training every day as well as tours of the bay for those more confident. German was very accommodating even taking us out when it wasn't on the schedule. For a guy who does this all day every day he loves his job and was very patient with everyone learning. The spin class was another favourite. Offered at 8am every day except Sunday. Beatriz is happy and encouraging. She welcomed newcomers and the experienced could ramp up the tension to make the class harder. The class is only 30 minutes and the 9 bikes can fill up, so best to be there 20 minutes early. There are not clips on the pedals so leave your spin shoes at home! Beatriz teaches Pilates right after so you can stay and do that or head to the gym. There is one treadmill, one recumbent bike, one stair master, one weight machine, a few benches and weights from 5-30 pounds. The guys would have liked weights heavier than that, note to management! There is also yoga, meditation, & aqua zumba.

There is laundry service as well as dry cleaning service at the hotel or you can do it yourself with two free washers and dryers. They have detergent at the front desk.

The onsite store is very limited so bring your extra sunscreen (note the biological 'reef safe' sunscreen is a great way to get burnt - it does NOT work!) and extra snacks if you have kiddos.

There are very few kids here. There is apparently a kids club but I have not seen it. There is a small wading pool which is nice (but same temp as the pool), and there are high chairs and a change table in the handicap washroom by the snack bar. Picky eaters might struggle here. There is toast and peanut butter and jam, and little boxes of fruit loops, Corn Pops & other cereal. Small yogourts & muffins too. There is pasta made to order at the buffet every night, and the snack bar has French fries, pizza, hot dogs, burgers and chicken. It would be barely enough for my 4 & 7 year old to get by for the week! No shortage of fruit and vegis though. The beach is awesome for kids and ocean is safe and relatively calm most days. In front of the Resort the ocean is sandy so no need for beach shoes.

The rooms are nice and spacious. We have a Queen bed, couch, Tv, nice closet space, safe, private toilet and shower, sink with big counter, scale to see how much weight you have gained this week, and balcony with jacuzzi tub for two and two chairs. Tv is limited to Mexican tv & Fox News & CNN. Wifi is free and has been pretty good though it was down for a day.

The Resort is a 15 minute ride to the ruins at Tulum which is worth the morning out. It is a 30-40 minute trip into Playa Del Carmen. Save your money on the taxi rides and go curbside on the highway and these white vans will pull over (they say Playa del Carmen - Tulum on the front cause that is their round trip). It was $35 pesos to Tulum and $40 to Playa. That's a couple of bucks versus the $35-40 can ride to Playa.

Overall this Resort has been excellent and I recommend it. I would come back here again with my husband but as a family I think my kids would prefer a Resort that caters to kids.

Observations

I will start by saying we love this resort. When guests mention it’s gone downhill or looks tired I wonder when was their last visit. My only other time here was in 2014. Building 1 wasn’t even fit for occupancy. No refrigerator in the rooms, water jugs were in the hallways and WiFi was only available in the lobby. And I loved my stay! Now there are multiple bars, mini fridge in every room, specialty restaurants and more pools. As before the staff are amazing. Staff are continually cleaning, repairing and doing general maintenance.

People have different wants, needs and expectations.
If you need to be entertained, want plush expensive linens, expect foam parties, loud music and a constant party atmosphere this is not the place for you. If you want to snorkel, enjoy the ocean, paddle board, do yoga, relax, enjoy the sound of the waves: you’ll want to come back.

You can have completely different experiences based on which area you choose to lounge. In front of buildings 3/4 is a rocky beachfront, it’s a very quiet area, not crowded, 2 small pools and a small bar, we didn’t need to be up early for loungers (at 9am loungers could be found), drink service took a bit longer due to the distance. In front of buildings 1/2 the beach is smooth, snorkeling, wading, swimming is easy to do. There’s the snack bar, sushi bar, main pool and a smaller pool, beach volleyball, very crowded, had to be up early for loungers (by 7am it was very full of towels), much more active, drink service was very good.

Your tastebuds are your own so food is subjective. We enjoyed the steakhouse twice. The chicken and pork were our favorites both times, the salad bar is also very good. The sushi bar is a great addition. The main dining room has a variety of options for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You may not like everything but you should be able to find something you enjoy. The made to order omelettes, pasta and the pizza were always good. The salad options were very good and fresh. The breads were wonderful. We have no complaints about any of the dining.

The room was spotless every day. Housekeeping really is excellent here. Yes the rooms are basic rooms. They are clean, comfortable and have all your basic needs. Shampoo, body wash, lotion, toothbrush and toothpaste (such a tiny tube of toothpaste lasted a surprisingly long time). Plenty of closet space which included an iron, ironing board, robe, slippers, umbrella and safe.

Used the washer and dryer twice during our two weeks. Learned to use the gentle cycle otherwise it was a long long wash time. One washer, one dryer. Pods can be bought at reception, 3 for $3 USD. I would recommend using the laundry service.

Each bar seemed to make drinks and coffee a bit different. Find your favorite. A drink menu would be really appreciated.

At home I drink Meiomi Pinot Noir and I enjoyed the house red merlot at dinner every night. My husbands only small complaint was with the beer. He’s a Coors light drinker. He also likes Dos Equis and Modelo. I’m not sure how many guests are drinking the Heineken in the mini fridge but none that we talked to drank it. Having Dos Equis (which you can ask to have in the mini fridge but he had to ask every day or it was Heineken) or Modelo would be a huge benefit to me because it would make my husband much happier. I could have left a note but I honestly didn’t think about it since I wasn’t drinking it. We would walk into town and buy a 12 pack of coors light at Oxxo for $8 or $9 USD. I wonder if they check the recycling to see what brands of off site canned beer is being drank. That is seriously the only complaint. And it’s not even a big one: to me.

Having a board with daily activities listed would also be handy. Often our phones were in the room so we couldn’t check the website.

Marissa was simply fabulous with drink service at the beach! Fernando was our very favorite bartender! Juan Carlos in the main dining room took excellent care of his guests. German had a handle on how long towels were left on unoccupied loungers! Alan with guest services has to be the most professional and friendly person we have ever met. We were always happy to see him. Every employee that we encountered were welcoming, helpful and very service oriented.

I enjoyed the yoga at Akumal Bay Resort. Claudio and Hiram are dedicated instructors. I learn something new from each yoga instructor I meet and this was no exception.
The yoga parlor is discreetly located in a quiet part of the resort. Worth at least a daily visit during your stay.
I liked the sea and the beach a lot, you can find more quiet places but also activities. Turtles are guaranteed and you can get the snorkle equipment for free for one hour/day (enough for me) or 3 dollars for the whole day.
People get up early and reserve chairs on the beach although there are signs which specifically say not to do this because if your towels are left unattended for longer than 60 minutes they will be removed. Probably applies in full season, it didn't in April.
The food is great, there is a lot to chose from also for vegetarians. Cocktails... for us most of them were way too sweet, so in the end we stuck to tequila and water.
The tipping part of the story was at first awkward but we got the hang of it (we think). Since nobody mentions any rates, I won't either. I will repeat what I was told: it's up to you and don't focus on this only, nobody will be offended by a tip but unfortunately 50 and 100 pesos bills are hard to come by so try to prepare ahead.
I would advise for the ocean front view room as the best value. In the roof ocean front view you get a smaller room and a terrace one level higher which is not really worth it.
The room cleaning service quality strangely varies. We stayed in two rooms: in building 2 the service was much better than in building 4. Our feedback was through smaller tips but thinking about it now, we should have mentioned it at the reception.
Talking about building 4: if possible avoid it! At the end of this building there is a sewage treatment plant and especially on level 3 and at that end of the building it smells.
Another good thing was the laundry service, we came from a trip around Yucatan with a lot of dirty clothes. You pay 3 dollars for the detergent and can do your own laundry and there are dryers too.

They say home is where your heart is. Well, my heart is at Akumal Bay Beach and Wellness Resort. We decided to splurge this year and go for two glorious weeks. Joel and Emanuele made sure that we were all set and had the building and room we wanted. When my hot natured self was not cool enough in our room, they took care to get us moved to a room that I was happy with.

As soon as we walked in we were greeted by name by some of our favorite people! Wilbur right away started chanting my name and made drinks for us and gave us huge hugs! He loved seeing my younger kids and made them feel welcome and not like little kids. They love his banana smoothies and virgin pina colada drinks!

German was our next stop. We talk to him throughout the year and he calls m kids to check up on them. He is funny and super social. He'll talk to anyone and get you to paddle board, lead you through water aerobics, or he'll sit and pay cards if it's raining outside.

Jorge...oh my! My family needed this trip to get away from life. I don't know the last time we all sat and laughed so much. He is working so hard to get fun events that everyone can enjoy. From dancing lessons by the pool to music trivia at night. He is a true entertainer.

Raymond is another entertainer. Night time singing and piano playing is perfect for a night in the breeze coming off the water.

Adiel, thank you for bringing my daughter out of her shell. You got her dancing, laughing, and smiling...something that I have not seen her do so much of late. I don't know how I can ever repay you for helping me see my little girl again!

Now to Jesus! I think I probably say the same thing every year, but this man...he does everything for me. At breakfast he knows what I want to drink. On the beach, he brings us drinks without asking, he just knows . He will bring us lunch, make reservations, ask a million times what he can do for us. We went fishing and gave him one of the fish we caught for his family to enjoy. The next day he brought us ceviche that was as good or better than anything I have ever had. Even though we just got home, he is already messaging us to make sure we are safe at home!

I am going to group a few of the girls together. Diana, Guadalupe, Monica, Marbella...I know I am missing someone...You are all amazing! You smile and welcome us, remembering us from years past, you are part of what makes this home.

Christian...aka "baby face" (I'm allowed to call him this since I've known him since he was 19 when I met him). He laughs with us and smiles through his eyes since we can't see his smile behind his mask. He is such a hard worker. Busy nights at the bar don't have anything on him. When a group of little kids got bored with shirley temple drinks, he made them fun, non-alcoholic drinks to make them feel special.

Erik, Arcangel (Alexis), and ALL the bartenders...when you can see my cup and know what to put in it without being told...I mean, what can I say? You get me! And thank you!

Now, we had massages, as we always do. Martha and Itzel took care of us this time around. One hour was amazing and I could have let this continue to go for another hour.

Luca the bird....why do we remember that and not his person's name? He was amazing, letting us hold the bird and answering all our questions. He loves his birds so very much and you can tell in the way he talks about them.

Carlos, the wonderful butler. We will miss seeing you at the front desk and wish you the very best, just as you always wish for us. I do hope to see you again soon!

The buffet staff...Marco and Audomaro you do a great job running things. Araceli, your sweet smile every morning makes my day start even better. Then all the staff, Jesus, Otilio, Elios, and Ricardo, (Wilberth at night) you work so hard to keep things moving and people happy. Thank you.

Now for the names I don't remember. I wish I did. The lady that smiles through the heat making people omlettes and eggs in the mornings. You are so cute! I love seeing your smiling face and how you tell me you want to go swim in the ocean after work.

To the chef that made our meal from our deep sea fishing. I don't think I have ever had Mahi Mahi that tasted that amazing. As Wilbur would say, "it was soooo gooooddd."

The guys working on the beach day in and day out to clean the sargassum, They work their tails off on something that is only controlled by the ocean itself.

The gentlemen that take our bags to room after room and back again. You lift, rolls, push so hard all day and are appreciated.

The room service crew. Thank you for dealing with me and my kids wanting french fries and chocolate fondant almost every night.

Our maid service and the laundry service. Wow! You do a job that not a lot of people would want to do and we appreciate and thank you for all your work to make our stay perfect.

Conrado, you and your wife start us off by picking us up and end our trip by taking us away...even if my husband threatened to jump back in the van when you were leaving. Thank you for always getting us started off right and being sympathetic when we have to go home.

I would also like to thank all the guests that became part of our extended family as well. We met people from across the country and had so much fun with you all. It was so great to dance, sing, drink, and play games. That is what you get when you go to Akumal. A group of people that love the resort, call it home, and plan to meet up again next year! And yes, we will be back next year!
