The good: The people, the people, the people. Everyone who worked here was kind, warm, and gave everything their all. Other reviews cover that a lot so I’ll leave it at that. It’s also a lovely bay, and while like much of the area, there’s a lot of coral damage, there are still some sections of reef, fish, rays, and of course turtles to see when snorkeling - if you venture out far enough (around the closed area).
The bad: First impressions were… rough. We had an included airport transfer, and while it showed on our reservation, after a full day of flying with a 3am wake-up, arriving in Cancun to find no driver in the chaos there was not great. After calling the hotel, they finally got someone, but it was over an hour wait (in the rain!) for a driver, and then the 1.5 hour drive to the resort. They said it was due to a transportation manager quitting recently, and yes, things happen, but there’s no good excuse for that situation.
And upon arriving at our room, it was a classic “this is not what the hotel photo showed”. There was no view of the ocean, or a hammock, but instead the back of a swimming pool with screaming kids, water aerobics classes, and the like. I’m pretty sure the website photos are from Building 3 which was currently mid-renovation. To be honest to guests, there should be more price tiers - actual ocean view garden suites, and obstructed view garden suites.
The room was also clearly in need of updating. Corroded mirrors, a TV hanging sideways due to being wall-mounted with an undersized bolt was just a start. And then what seem like small issues, but get annoying quickly, such as the linens which didn’t fit the bed, so the corners of the bottom sheet come untucked after rolling over in bed once. And perhaps the most frustrating bit was that the thermostats were locked to 19.5º C (about 67º F). For sleeping that’s fine, but if stuck in the room during inclement weather, being able to adjust the temperature is a pretty basic room feature. After multiple pleadings to the front desk, multiple maintenance visits (including once being told it was fixed, and essentially being lied to about the issue), it was finally fixed by replacing the thermostat with one which wasn’t locked - but that took until day 5 of an 8 day visit.
The beach: Our first morning we headed out to the beach to find… zero available lounge chairs. In a nutshell, the owners built a resort to contain way more people than the pools and beach have capacity for, so every morning before 7am (officially 8am, but best chairs are gone by 7am), people have to head out and stake out their chairs for the day. It’s a crappy system. Perhaps it’s just because they’ve lost too much sand, so it’s only a portion or the resort (in front of Building 1) where you can safely go in the water - everywhere else it’s exposed rock/coral. Even where the sand is, there’s still rocking getting into the water. There were also a lot of smokers, and the lounge are crammed close together, so it’s not a peace-and-quiet sort of beach, if that’s your thing.
Food and drinks: In both cases, they’re… serviceable, but between not great and terrible. The higher-end dining spots were much better at creating food that *looked* gourmet than actually *tasting* good. K’ooben, the “gourmet” restaurant served “beef tenderloin” that was the toughest we’ve had - we were pretty sure it was sirloin attempted to be passed off as tenderloin. Drinks were typically either overly sweet or watered down. Something like a Negroni (hard to screw up) was still somehow watered down. In the end, with an all-you-can-drink situation, that might not be a bad idea, but still disappointing. All in all, they were all restaurants that if you paid to go to, you would never return. And for wine drinkers, there was 1 white and 1 red, with some others available only by the bottle at highly inflated prices.
Bottom line: if you’re not too picky about.. all the stuff mentioned above, and are okay with a “cruise ship on land” vibe (i.e., lots of people and noise everywhere), this might be a good fit. But it wasn’t for us, and we won’t be back.
