Our very own Stephen Morrell participated in a panel during the Association of International Energy Negotiators (AIEN) Internal Energy Summit in Bangkok earlier this month. As part of the discussion, he explained how natural gas is still relevant to today's energy evolution. Read the post below to hear more of his views on the topic:

At the AIEN International Energy Summit in Bangkok, one of the panels took a look at ‘One Year Later – Is Natural Gas Still Relevant to the Energy Evolution’? Natural gas continues to be front and center in the evolution of the global energy portfolio. As countries look to their energy solutions, how does natural gas, particularly LNG, impact the security, affordability and sustainability of a robust energy future? Moderator Edward M Taylor, Partner, A&O Shearman kicked off the discussion with a simple question, reflected in the session’s title: is natural gas still relevant to the energy evolution? Andrew Kirk, Vice President Origination, LNG, B Grimm believes it is and will continue to play a big role. ‘The issue with renewables capacity and their intermittent nature means we will continue to need natural gas. New technologies such as batteries are still a long way off from being able to supply a full grid load. Renewables are also geographically bespoke and not available to all. They can provide solutions in areas with limited demand but the cost to run a city like Bangkok is so problematic. Many countries will not be able to cope with the cost increase of moving straight to renewables. Stephen Morrell, Senior Vice President, ExxonMobil PNG LNG, agreed with this. ‘The conversation about gas has never been more pertinent. Whether we are talking about emissions, the war in Ukraine, or living standards around the world – gas has its part to play. There are also so many conversations about the rise of Artificial Intelligence. But where is the power coming from to feed the data centres that will play such a large part? ‘Gas can accelerate the energy transition today. We can stop coal today. We can fill the gaps in intermittent renewables today. So, what is holding us back?’ ‘We are far enough along the energy transition to separate the aspirational and the unachievable,’ said Andrew. ‘We are hearing these ideological positions where gas is considered unnecessary without having a sensible conversation about alternatives. Moving straight to renewables will create very unstable energy grids that will stifle economic growth.’ With the global population set to grow by 2bn by 2050, Steve believes the responsibility will grow higher on the energy companies to provide affordable, reliable and sustainable energy, and natural gas will play a large role in this. ‘Gas is well understood and relatively cleaner compared with coal. The infrastructure is there and expanding. There is a lot to be said for the marriage between gas and intermittent renewables. Moving from a well known system to new technology, it isn’t going to happen overnight. We could put more gas into the system. This will help see a 60% reduction in emissions if we replace coal, without even using new technologies.’ ‘One of the main problems is how to fill the gaps from renewables,’ Andrew concluded. ‘The answer is gas. The stage is set for a reasoned conversation about gas.’ #aienIES

ExxonMobil is proud to share that our team recently raced in the ExxonMobil Singapore Recreation Club Dragon Boat Carnival, qualifying for the Plate Finals, and finishing a respectable 17 out of 59! This placed our team in the top third of all teams at the Carnival. Amazing job to everyone who participated, but especially to our team members! We look forward to racing again in 2025.

Vice President | ExxonMobil LNG Market Development | Global Business Development & Origination | LNG ♦ LNG Infrastructure ♦ Gas to Power ♦

Navigating the Future of Energy: Insights from the Indo-Pacific Business Forum I had the honor of attending the Indo-Pacific Business Forum (IPBF) in Manila, Philippines, an event co-hosted by the U.S. Trade and Development Agency and the Government of the Republic of the Philippines, in partnership with the U.S. Department of State. This prestigious forum brought together 500 leaders, including CEOs, project developers, government officials, and financiers, to discuss and explore opportunities in the infrastructure sector across emerging Indo-Pacific economies. I spoke in the session “Private Sector Views on Growth in the Indo-Pacific Region” moderated by Ambassador Brian McFeeters, SVP and Regional MD for US-ASEAN Business Council. The panel included Stephen Braim, VP of Government Affairs for IBM APC, and Richard Chong Woo Shin, CFO for Jollibee Foods Corporation. During my session, we delved into the critical role of LNG in meeting the region’s growing energy demands while addressing sustainability concerns. Here are some key takeaways from my participation: The world is expected to add around 2 billion more people to reach almost 10 billion in total. The global economy will double in size. This is important as a significant part of it is contributed by the Indo-Pacific region, which is home to ~65% of the world population and ~62% of the world’s GDP today. To support this growing population with rising living standards, we project that the world will need to produce 15 percent more energy in 2050 than it does today, while striving to reduce CO2 emissions. The challenge of course is that increasing energy supply while lowering carbon emissions providing low carbon energy security, at the lowest cost and lowest emissions possible is where LNG plays an increasingly important role. As growing economies seek to diversify their energy supplies, achieve their climate goals and integrate intermittent renewables in their energy mix, the demand for the cleaner-burning natural gas grows; we see it becoming the “fuel of choice” displacing other more carbon intensive fuels, like coal; we see LNG demand continuing  to grow at ~4-5% a year- as the world’s population demands a flexible, reliable, and efficient fuel choice. In the Philippines, the increasing energy demand driven by economic expansion necessitates a stable energy supply. The country has successfully built new LNG import infrastructure which will go a long way towards energy security, reliability & stability. Securing Long term LNG supply as a reliable & flexible energy source will enable the country to deliver strong GDP growth whilst meeting its GHG reduction plan. ExxonMobil has more than 140 years of history in the global energy industry, and we are a leader in LNG with more than 40 years’ experience in building long-term energy resilience for our customers by producing affordable, lower carbon intensity energy such as LNG.
