General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) is continuing its support of EagleEye multi-mode radar development with a company investment to add an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) antenna and associated software that will increase range and deliver significant mode enhancements. AESA will be a “drop-in” hardware upgrade to the existing EagleEye radar and could be an option for the new Gray Eagle 25M (GE 25M) aircraft assembly when ready. AESA antennas replace the mechanically steered dish antennas of earlier-generation radars with a solid-state, all-electronic emitter. In addition to enhancing the radar’s performance, by replacing the motor and other components that physically move the radar dish, AESA greatly improves repairability and reliability. EagleEye is a multi-mode radar that builds on years of pioneering expertise by GA-ASI. Using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), Eagle Eye enables operators to look in detail through clouds, smoke, dust, haze, or other conditions that might obscure a purely visual sensor. And for the first time on the Gray Eagle platform, EagleEye delivers radar-based Full Motion Video (FMV) called “Video SAR,” which enables live visual tracking of moving targets via the radar system. The EagleEye radar performs Moving Target Indication (MTI), detects changes, builds strip maps, and yields other precise insights to analysts, commanders, and operators. With its Maritime Wide Area Search (MWAS) mode, EagleEye also provides a dedicated maritime MTI mode for tracking and targeting vessels and further supports the MDO mission set of the U.S. Army, particularly in support of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM) mission, but also in Europe, Africa and the Middle East where there is an increased need for maritime reconnaissance, surveillance and target acquisition, which is critical to achieve information dominance and overmatch. #military #defense #defence #militaryleak https://lnkd.in/gqbr8Fv6

Aviation News Summary: Amazon Prime Air received FAA approval for beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) drone operations, enabling expansion in College Station, Texas. The new permissions allow remote pilots to oversee drones with onboard detect-and-avoid systems. Amazon aims to deliver 500 million packages annually by drone, competing with Wing and Zipline. Expansion plans include Arizona, the UK, and Italy. Emirates President Sir Tim Clark described the April floods in Dubai as "like being under attack," admitting the airline needs to be more dynamic in future extreme weather. At the IATA meeting, he highlighted Emirates' struggles, including 400 canceled flights. Clark also emphasized the importance of seatbelt use after a fatal turbulence event on Singapore Airlines flight SQ321. United Airlines removed a plane for deep cleaning after up to 30 passengers fell ill on a flight from Vancouver to Houston. The sick passengers were part of a group returning from a cruise in British Columbia. The CDC is investigating norovirus outbreaks on cruise ships, including the Celebrity Summit. No hospitalizations occurred, but two subsequent flights were canceled. Air India Express flight attendant Surabhi Khatun, 26, was arrested in Kerala for attempting to smuggle nearly a kilogram of gold hidden in her rectum on a flight from Muscat, Oman. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence nabbed Khatun in a sting operation at Kannur Airport. Gold smuggling is rampant in India due to high import taxes and demand for cheap gold. United Airlines flight UA998, a Boeing 787-10 from Brussels to Newark, diverted to Dublin due to an onboard passenger disruption. Initially, no formal emergency was declared. Upon landing, the HSE Infectious Disease Unit attended the flight due to a suspected infectious disease. The aircraft remains at a remote stand with passengers onboard for further tests. The French Air and Space Force will conduct GNSS jamming during the Black Crow 24 exercise from May 27 to June 7, 2024, to train crews for disrupted GPS environments. The jamming, affecting areas in the Puy-de-Dôme region, will occur 2-3 hours daily. Notable impacts

The Defense Advance Research Project Agency (DARPA) is making significant strides in the development of uncrewed VTOL aircraft through the #SPRINT and #ANCILLARY programs. The #SPRINT program aims to create a fast 400-450 kph X-plane, while the #ANCILLARY program focuses on enhancing long-endurance small VTOL UAS, tripling current payload/range capabilities. Our partnership with AtomBeam is a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation. By providing access to essential resources, expert insights, and strategic networking opportunities, we've helped AtomBeam propel their R&D, fine-tune their Compaction technology for enhanced data security and operational efficiency within the USAF. AtomBeam has been awarded two SBIR Phase II contracts and has received non-dilutive funding totaling more than $2.5 million for further research. This funding is focused on the deployment of their pioneering Compaction software, which increases the effective bandwidth of an existing network by a factor of 4X. Privileged to participate in an aero antenna workshop alongside several premier airlines at the APEX (Airline Passenger Experience Association)’s TECH conference in February, RGN learned that recent GEO satellite anomalies have been a wake-up call for operators, adding weight to the ‘resiliency’ argument behind hybrid multi-orbit IFC adoption. Under the specter of these challenges, a growing contingent of airlines are now eager for the ‘holy grail’ of antennas to come to market, something that is multi-orbit, multi-constellation, low weight, low latency, high throughput, low cost, and simple to install, as revealed at the conference in Los Angeles. In short, they want something with staying power that can talk to here-and-now satellites and future constellations in various orbits. ThinKom Solutions, Inc. is offering solutions for airlines to 'unstick' themselves from inflexible IFC antenna hardware to avail of LEO/MEO/GEO/HEO services, as chairman and CTO William (Bill) Milroy explained. "If you are in favor of being unsticky we want to do our best to unstick you."
