As we approach Memorial Day, I am reminded of the profound words penned by President Abraham Lincoln in his letter to Ms. Bixby, who lost her five sons in combat. He acknowledged the "costly sacrifice upon the altar of freedom," a sentiment that resonates deeply with those who have felt the sting of losing friends and teammates. The stark reality of combat losses, the unanticipated news of those killed in peacetime, forever alters our perception of the world, lending a solemn gravity to the news banners that once may have seemed distant. On Memorial Day, we reflect and remember those who gave, as Lincoln so eloquently put it, "the last full measure of devotion." We recall the last times we saw their vibrant faces, the shared laughter, their legendary personas, and the unyielding sense of duty with which they embraced life's most harrowing challenges. In their memory, I strive daily to live up to the extraordinary standard they set—an impossible metric, perhaps, but one worth pursuing with relentless dedication. This weekend, we honor their sacrifice, their courage, and the indelible mark they have left on our souls.
