The Defense Advance Research Project Agency (DARPA) is making significant strides in the development of uncrewed VTOL aircraft through the #SPRINT and #ANCILLARY programs. The #SPRINT program aims to create a fast 400-450 kph X-plane, while the #ANCILLARY program focuses on enhancing long-endurance small VTOL UAS, tripling current payload/range capabilities. These initiatives involve novel designs, propulsion systems, and AI/autonomy integration, set to revolutionize unmanned aviation for #defense purposes. Both programs are based on autonomy and artificial intelligence technologies to enable uncrewed VTOL aircraft to execute complex missions without the need for pilots on board. These aircraft are indeed being engineered as fully autonomous systems rather than optionally-piloted vehicles.
