The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is accepting public comment on permit applications from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution for the Locking away Carbon on the Northeast Slope and Shelf (LOC-NESS) project. The LOC-NESS project is the first controlled field trial of ocean alkalinity enhancement in a coastal shelf environment and represents the first marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) field research permit under consideration by the EPA. Ocean Visions believes the two permits under consideration are our best opportunity yet to advance knowledge about the efficacy and impacts of ocean alkalinity enhancement, one of the leading mCDR approaches. We're excited to support the EPA’s approval of the projects. Our full comments are available for review here: https://lnkd.in/g_yNrvUj #oceanhealth #climatesolutions

With the recent announcement of the shutdown of Running Tide, a Maine-based company working to sequester excess carbon dioxide in the ocean, there has been a swirl of speculation, inaccurate statements, and sweeping conclusions about what happened, and what this portends for the field of carbon dioxide removal and for marine-based forms of carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) specifically. As a science-based ocean conservation organization that has worked with Running Tide for more than three years, as well as with 13 other mCDR startups through our Launchpad program, we hope to inform the discussion and the emerging lessons by sharing some background, our experiences with Running Tide, and some thoughts about the role of the private sector in research and development of mCDR.
