Overfishing depletes fish stocks and disrupts ecosystems ❌ The new Labour government can end overfishing by setting catch limits according to scientific advice and introducing measures to protect all fish species. #SeasTheDay and follow Blue Marine Foundation as we work to put a stop to overfishing ✊
About us
Known as Blue Marine, this UK registered charity was set up in 2010 by some of the team behind the award-winning documentary film ‘The End of the Line’. Blue Marine is dedicated to creating marine reserves and establishing sustainable models of fishing. Its mission is to campaign against over-fishing and for the effective protection of 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030.

Estimates show that over half of the world’s gross domestic product (GDP) depends on nature. How can we use finance to help tackle the sharp declines in biodiversity across the world and build a resilient future for people and the planet? 🌎 In collaboration with Plan Vivo Foundation and goodcarbon we’re pleased to launch a new report ‘Credit where Credit’s Due: Identifying the Core Principles of a High-Integrity Biodiversity Market.’ The report identifies three core principles for financing crucial nature protection and restoration initiatives, also known as a ‘High Integrity Biodiversity Market’: 1️⃣ Clear communication on the biodiversity assessment methodology and outcomes 2️⃣ Integrated community engagement and participation 3️⃣ Fair and equitable pricing. To reverse nature loss by the global target of 2030, companies we need to spend an estimated $600-800 billion, annually. The emerging biodiversity credit market offers us onea way to achieve restoration and protection of nature at scale and requires building a market based on trust and integrity and include transparent, robust and equitable projects. Read the full report here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eKc_wzv9 About the Survey: In December 2023, Blue Marine, Plan Vivo Foundation and GoodCarbon led a market survey aimed at establishing the private sector’s level of interest and understanding of the emerging biodiversity credit market. The survey revealed companies' motivations to purchase biodiversity credits, important attributes within a credit and drivers behind incentive to pay more for credits. Are you an educator looking to bring the ocean into the classroom? 🧑🏫 In collaboration with Encounter Edu as part of the Convex Seascape Survey project we are pleased to share three new curriculum-aligned units covering a range of ocean topics. Check out the resources here 👉 https://lnkd.in/gAy-67XF ExeterMarine, Convex Seascape Survey, Convex Insurance, Victoria Turner, Earth Minutes #OceanLiteracy #OceanEducation #Education #Teaching
We're proud to present three new curriculum-aligned units developed in collaboration with Convex Seascape Survey and world-leading scientists from ExeterMarine. Ocean & Climate for KS3 Science and Geography, and Ocean Heroes for KS2 offer comprehensive, engaging, and free resources for teaching essential aspects of ocean science, climate change, and sustainability. Ocean Heroes | Ages 7-11 / KS2 | Cross-curricular is a primary-level unit that introduces ocean and sustainability topics, emphasising blue carbon habitats' importance and how the ocean can be an ally in tackling climate change. Ocean & Climate |Ages 11-14 / KS3 | Science is a lower-secondary unit that covers vital topics such as the carbon cycle, ocean biodiversity, climate change impacts, and ocean acidification, enhancing students' understanding and science capital. Ocean & Climate | Ages 11-14 / KS3 | Geography explores ocean and climate change connections, the role of blue carbon habitats, and the ocean's potential as a climate ally. It covers a range of human and physical geography topics and introduces the concept of ecosystem services. All these lessons can be downloaded from https://lnkd.in/gAy-67XF. As the ocean absorbs over 25% of manmade carbon emissions and 90% of excess heat from global warming, it's crucial to equip students with knowledge about these topics and learn how the ocean is affected by climate change and can be a source of hope in tackling the issue. Our response through these resources balances addressing climate and ocean crises with robust science, climate optimism, and tools for young people to advocate for greater change. These resources are part of our work to bring the science of the Convex Seascape Survey to classrooms internationally, working in partnership with Convex Insurance, Blue Marine Foundation, and the University of Exeter. #ConvexSeascapeSurvey #ExeterMarine #ClimateChangeEducation #ClimateOptimism #YouthAdvocacy

🦈 Happy Shark Awareness Day! Sharks help keep our oceans healthy. At the top of the food chain, sharks are critical for balancing the health of our marine environment and ocean. They help remove weak and sick fish, which helps keep the ecosystem in balance. Sharks are among the most endangered of all marine species globally. It is estimated that since 1970, oceanic shark and ray populations worldwide have declined by 71% and one third of all shark species are now threatened by extinction. ❌ Sharks help boost the economy, balance the ecosystem and maintain the health of our oceans. Find out how they support people 👇 #SharkAwarenessDay #Sharks #elasmobranch

🗳️Today the UK has a new government; one that will likely lead the country to achieving its international commitments to protecting at least 30 % of the UK’s land and seas by 2030. These promises now become its responsibility. Some progress has been made towards meeting this target in UK seas, but the there is still some way to go. Bottom trawling is still allowed in 31 out of 34 domestic offshore marine protected areas, fishing catch limits still exceed scientific advice by over 50%, and over two thirds of the UK’s fishing quotas are controlled by just 25 companies. ❌ We are asking for the new Labour government to commit to THREE ocean priorities: 1️⃣ To ban bottom trawling in ALL UK marine protected areas 2️⃣ To keeping fishing quotas in line with scientific advice 3️⃣ To commit to reforming social inequality in UK fishing Join us in calling on the new Labour government to commit to these priorities for our ocean. ✊ Aisling McGarrigle, Jo Coumbe #OceanAction #ClimateAction #EndOverfishing #NewGovernment #Election2024 #GeneralElection

🪸NEWS: Forests of rare red hydrocorals discovered in Chile's Patagonian sea Scientists exploring the remote waters of Chile’s Kawesqar National Marine Reserve have made an incredible discovery that sheds new light on Patagonia’s little-understood marine ecosystems. These slow-growing and highly sensitive corals are ecosystem engineers, which need protection from industrial salmon farming and pollution. Over recent centuries, we have lost huge amounts of habitats; including up to 50 per cent of seagrass meadows, 85 per cent of saltmarsh habitats and 95 per cent of native oyster reefs. 🌊 To combat this, we must actively restore these marine ecosystems to their former abundance.🌱 Marine licensing is crucial to permitting activity on the seabed, such as planting seagrass or restoring oyster reefs, whilst protecting the environment and human health. Seascape restoration projects currently face a lengthy, complex, and costly marine licensing process. We must reform the licensing process to enable quick recovery of our coastal seas. 🐠 Vote for the ocean! #SeastheDay Solent Seascape Project https://lnkd.in/e5cd5eB8
