I’m looking forward to being a keynote speaker on the theme of “Sustainable Use of Marine Biodiversity” at the first Forum for the Ocean in Cancun, Mexico, next week, part of the 11th Festival of the Oceans of the Mexican Caribbean. Through art, science communication, gastronomy, and conservation actions, the Festival promotes the preservation of marine ecosystems among the local population and visitors. The Forum for the Ocean focuses on six themes: 🌊Biodiversity and Ecology of Marine Ecosystems 🌊Marine Pollution by Plastics 🌊Sustainable Use of Marine Biodiversity 🌊Fisheries and Food Security 🌊Climate Change and the Protection of the Ocean 🌊Policy Making for the Care of the Ocean The “Sustainable Use of Marine Biodiversity” track aims at guiding society, policymakers and academia in working together to achieve an equitable and sustainable Blue Economy. My speech will focus on accelerating the SDGs by investing in marine natural capital. 🌍 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗢𝗣𝟮𝟯: 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗮𝗻 – 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Thrilled to have been part of the 𝟮𝟯𝗿𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 (𝗖𝗢𝗣𝟮𝟯) 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗼𝘇, Slovenia, from December 4th to 8th. The conference's objectives resonated deeply with our commitment to protecting, restoring and valorising the natural resources of the Euro-Mediterranean. 💡 The Interreg Euro-MED Natural Heritage Mission project partners from the governance project Dialogue for Nature actively contributed to the objectives directly aligned with COP23 in various sessions, including plenaries and side-events. 🌱 Ecosystem Restoration Focus: Plan Bleu's side event on Ecosystem Restoration and Biodiversity loss, highlighted governance conditions for successful wetland restoration. Governance project Dialogue for Nature project was promoted and encouraged participation of Mediterranean stakeholders in thematic Working Groups. 🌊 IUCN Initiatives: engaged in the successful 30x30 event and launched Act30 initiative. The IUCN emphasized the importance of participating in these discussions, promoting the Mission’s governance project Dialogue for Nature and its working groups, as a new platform to facilitate these discussions. 🤝 Marine Institute, Croatia Involvement: Contributed to discussions around the application of the global biodiversity framework, funding biodiversity conservation with MedFund, and encouraged engagement in the Mediterranean Resilience Network concept. 👏 Montenegro Representation: the Ministry of Tourism, Ecology, Sustainable Development and Northern Region Development are Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention and its Protocols. The Ministry was engaged in the main outcome of the meeting which was the Portorož Ministerial Declaration. 🌿 Excited to continue the journey of environmental advocacy, collaboration, and sustainable practices. We are once again on a crucial mission. This time, to spread the message about restoring and protecting our oceans. 🌊 The PHAROS Project: A New Horizon for Marine Biodiversity Restoration Very excited to announce the launch of an additional project where we will be responsible for #dissemination and #communication - The #PHAROS project, starting in September 2024. Over the next five years, #PHAROS will address the pressing issues of climate change and human activities threatening marine biodiversity in the Atlantic and Arctic regions. This ambitious project, led by Dr. Gordon Dalton from Plataforma Oceánica de Canarias (PLOCAN) Gran Canaria, has secured approximately €8 million in funding from the European Union's Horizon Europe program. International Consortium of Research Staff Associations (ICoRSA) is proud to lead the Dissemination and Communication efforts for PHAROS, ensuring the project's innovative solutions and findings reach a broad audience. 🌟 Key Objectives of PHAROS: - Protect and restore marine ecosystems and biodiversity - Prevent and eliminate ocean pollution - Foster a carbon-neutral and circular blue economy 🌍 Demo Sites: PLOCAN Test Site, Gran Canaria 🇪🇸 West Coast of Ireland 🇮🇪 Iceland 🇮🇸 PHAROS will develop guides to replicate successful methods in other regions, such as the EU Overseas Countries and Territories in the Caribbean, Greenland, and Iceland, spreading effective restoration strategies globally. 🌐 Project Partners: PHAROS unites 24 diverse partners from Spain, Portugal, Italy, Belgium, Ireland, Iceland, Denmark, the Netherlands, France, Ukraine, and Norway, with PLOCAN as the coordinating research facility. #PHAROSProject #MarineBiodiversity #OceanRestoration #HorizonEurope #Sustainability #BlueEconomy #ClimateAction Cluster Marítimo de Canarias *image for illustrative purposes only. The next case study we'd like to share takes us to Barcelona Metropolitan Region, where CREAF is evaluating climate and biodiversity impacts across a densely populated, peri-urban area featuring fragmented landscapes with various land uses. The region witnessed significant agricultural abandonment in the 20th century, leading to spontaneous reforestation and a 30% increase in forest cover. 🍃 **Reflecting on the 4the Region Green Economy Roundtable Discussion on Nature and Biodiversity ** 🌊 This past October, our co-founder Angharad made waves at the 4the Region Green Economy Roundtable discussion, shedding light on a crucial but often overlooked aspect of our ecosystem: marine biodiversity. As part of the build-up to the much-anticipated Green Economy Conference on November 22nd at the stunning new Swansea Arena, Angharad introduced our Think MôR project. She emphasized the urgency of increasing marine biodiversity, a vital component of our planet's health that doesn't always receive the attention it deserves. The discussion, featuring insights from Natural Resources Wales and other experts, was an eye-opener, highlighting the interconnectedness of all life forms and the importance of preserving our oceans. 💫 I’m excited to be speaking at Hello Tomorrow’s Global Summit in Paris on 22nd March where I’ll be moderating a discussion with three fantastic experts in biodiversity restoration. With extensive knowledge of land and sea restoration, Nicolas Pade Laurie Menoud and Axelle Ducos will speak to the most pertinent questions facing nature right now. Together, we will discuss: 🌳 The challenges to scaling and financing nature-based solutions; 📡 The important role of #naturetech in supporting biodiversity restoration; 📲 How Indigenous People and local communities are using nature tech to support their existing ecosystem conservation work; and 🌍 Much, much more! Nature tech is a term used to capture all the diverse technological innovations that can accelerate and scale the implementation and finance of high-quality nature-based solutions, and it’s for this reason that I think it’s an important part of climate and nature action. Especially as it addresses a range of environmental challenges including habitat destruction, deforestation, soil degradation, water pollution, and species loss.  It also facilitates the implementation and growth of solutions in food and agriculture, land and forests, oceans, water conservation management, biodiversity restoration, MRV, biodiversity credits, and green supply chains.
