MIT Open Learning Research Scientist Andrés Felipe Salazar Gómez, working with Alexandre Armengol Urpi, a postdoctoral associate in the MIT Department of Mechanical Engineering (MechE), studied ways to capture the implicit knowledge of MIT Glass Lab glassblowers for their J-WEL grant project. This video demonstrates how the team captured implicit knowledge of expert glassblowers using sensors and cameras to track eye movement. Through its Education Innovation Grants, the Jameel World Education Lab aspires to develop the building blocks, ideas, and connections that power global transformation in learning. “Our goal is to strengthen knowledge of the design, implementation, applicability, and impact of digital learning innovation at MIT and across the world. Instructors and leaders in J-WEL’s network are eager to learn about field-tested insights and to launch their own tests and experimentation...Such small-scale efforts could reveal new insights about challenges and opportunities in digital learning that could apply everywhere—including on the MIT campus.” Anjali Sastry, faculty director of the Jameel World Education Lab, explains the goal of the Frontiers in Digital Learning awards, a new grant program that shares insights from MIT Open Learning Digital Learning Lab (DLL) researchers with the world. #Teaching #Learning #Innovation

"We are seeking to extract that ‘je nais se quoi’ that most experts cannot verbally explain to others, and that is only transferred through extensive training and mentorship. By instrumentalizing the glassblowing experts and their tools, we seek to quantify the different actions required for a glassblower to complete a task, and use this information to create instructional material that will facilitate comprehension of the glassblowing activities." MIT Open Learning Research Scientist Andrés Felipe Salazar Gómez shares what excites him about his grant project focused on discovering ways to capture and pass on expert knowledge of MIT Glass Lab glassblowers. Through its Education Innovation Grants, the Jameel World Education Lab aspires to develop the building blocks, ideas, and connections that power global transformation in learning. #Teaching #Learning #Innovation #Glassblowing
