SUMC is thrilled to spotlight a new research report, co-authored by the Global Network for Popular Transportation with support from UNDP Accelerator Labs, taking a closer look at the trends, dimensions and characteristics of transportation around the world. This comprehensive study provides deep insights into the critical yet sometimes overlooked realm of popular transportation, a sector that moves millions of people and sustains hundreds of thousands of jobs worldwide. Emphasizing the importance of ground-level experiences, the research highlights how popular transportation serves as a primary mobility solution, particularly in underserved areas. Despite common perceptions of disorganization, these transportation networks are highly structured, challenging traditional western transport paradigms and offering alternative, effective organization methods. The report also addresses issues of accessibility and equity, emphasizing that, despite its crucial role in improving connectivity, the sector must enhance safety and fairness, particularly for marginalized communities. It advocates for a flexible understanding of transportation systems, suggesting that the future may lie in hybrid models that incorporate both formal and informal elements to better meet diverse community needs.   What is your vision for #OneSouthAsia? Over the last few days, we have had great discussions on bold ideas, and doable action points; we have reimagined cooperation, and have also rooted our discussions in reality. At the end of it, distilling a few takeaways from rich conversations and brainstorming with this collective group that represents the region.   👉 The vision of #OneSouthAsia is boosting growth and prosperity on a livable region and planet, through economic connectivity and climate and crisis cooperation. 👉 Most gains of cooperation will continue to be at sub-regional levels where spatial interdependence and economic wins are clearly identified. 👉 A few areas of actionable steps include support to technical, economic and scientific cooperation on specific issues; work on complementary approaches to infrastructure investments; and expand the scope to topics such as pandemic preparedness and response. 👉Media plays a key role in reporting on regional issues and shaping the narrative. 👉Engage with agents of change such as youth, civil society and media.   Great ideas, great conversations, and more work to be done!
