Gebeya Inc. Inc. and UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency have launched #BoundlessSkills.com, a digital platform aimed at connecting skilled refugees in Ethiopia 🇪🇹 with potential employers, fostering opportunities within the digital economy. Since its inception in November 2023, the platform has successfully onboarded nearly 300 refugees, showcasing promising early results. Supported by the Ministry Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, this initiative aligns with Ethiopia's commitment to creating economic opportunities for refugees and host communities. Margaret Atieno, UNHCR’s Deputy Representative in Ethiopia, emphasized the importance of integrating forcibly displaced populations into the country's economic sector. With a focus on both technical and non-technical skill sets, the platform caters to a diverse range of professions. Collaborations with organizations like the Refugee Investment Network and the The Amahoro Coalition further enhance the platform's reach and impact. As Ethiopia hosts nearly 1 million refugees and asylum seekers, the Boundless Skills Talent Cloud aims to expand its reach across the continent. I'm packing my bags to Geneva for the #GlobalRefugeeForum next week - the largest international gathering of countries and organisations committed to addressing the global refugee crisis. Talent Beyond Boundaries is pledging to help 15,000 refugees migrate on labour mobility pathways to countries where they can rebuild their lives. To achieve this we need your help: ✍ Language support: We are calling on all partners to help us provide access to more training, classes, and resources - especially for English and French languages - so that thousands of additional refugees become employment-ready. 💸 Resources: Our team provides customized support from CV building to mock interview training to ensure each candidate has the best foot forward to access an opportunity. These policy recommendations are crafted for a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including government bodies, international organizations, and the private sector because collaborative efforts are essential to address the nuanced needs of the refugee population. At Economist Impact, we have developed the Refugee Opportunity Index (ROI) to comprehensively understand the landscape of legislation, policies, programs, and practices that enable refugees to evolve into economically productive individuals within their host communities. The imperative of assisting refugees in achieving economic self-reliance extends beyond moral duty; it holds substantial economic rationale. Refugees have the potential to make considerable economic contributions to the national economies of their host countries. Our objective is to pinpoint the barriers impeding refugees from establishing sustainable livelihoods and leading dignified lives. The outcomes of this research will empower us and other stakeholders to advocate for prioritizing refugees’ social and economic inclusion and integration. This first iteration of the index is developed by Economist Impact and sponsored by the Refugee Investment Network (RIN) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). This index provides insights into ten countries spanning East Africa (Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda), Latin America, and the Caribbean (Belize, Colombia, Chile, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, and Peru). We are working to expand the scope and geographic coverage of this crucial index to facilitate evidence-based advocacy for refugees’ self-reliance. Coming from a country with one of the largest refugee populations globally, this research is very close to my heart. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to my current and former colleagues, particularly Michael Paterra, Carolina Zweig, and Dina Alborno, for laying the groundwork for this endeavor. Absolutely thrilled to recount my experience at the #GlobalRefugeeForum 2023 in Geneva, where I proudly represented the United States delegation. This quadrennial event, guided by the #GlobalCompactonRefugees, unites nations and organizations in addressing crucial refugee challenges. Key highlights of the spectacular Global Refugee Forum 2023: - Diverse Participation: Over 4,200 participants, including 300+ refugee delegates, represented 168 governments and 427 organizations. - Digital Impact: An impressive online audience of 10,000 tuned in, amplifying the global reach of the forum. - Financial Commitments:Pledges soared to an estimated $2.2 billion, covering vital sectors like education, healthcare, job opportunities, and holistic support for refugees and host communities. - Private Sector Engagement:The private sector committed an astounding $250 million, demonstrating a collaborative effort. - Humanitarian Commitments: A passionate commitment of 1,000,000 pro bono hours, 100,000 job opportunities, and 400,000 training opportunities was declared. - Investment in Ventures:Excitingly, over $180 million was announced for investment in refugee-owned ventures, fostering economic empowerment. - Educational Support: Recognizing potential, 6,000 scholarships were awarded, providing educational opportunities. - Future Resettlement Goals:With a shared ambition to resettle 1 million refugees by 2030 and create alternative pathways for 3 million more, the forum marked substantial progress. - Impactful Schemes:Work and education initiatives were set to positively impact 200,000 refugees. - Inclusive Support:Inclusion initiatives aimed to support over 1 million refugees and hosts, symbolizing a collective celebration of resilience, collaboration, and hope. Today is World Refugee Day! 🌿 This year’s theme focuses on solidarity with refugees – for a world where refugees are welcomed! Currently, 130 million people are displaced due to conflict, violence, and human rights violations; 32 million of them are refugees. Next year marks our 10th anniversary. 🎂  In a perfect world, we would not exist, but as long as there is a need, Startup Refugees will be here. In recognition of the day, let’s take a walk down memory lane and revisit the birth of Startup Refugees – an organization dedicated to supporting refugees: ✨ Startup Refugees started in 2015 – as a media campaign by media personalities and adventurous duo Riku Rantala and Tunna Milonoff. ✨ Refugee crisis – we emerged in response to the crisis and civil war that escalated in 2015 in the Iraq and Syria region and resulted in around 30 000 asulym seekers entering Finland. We started as a collaboration between companies and activists who saw that refugees could contribute to society through entrepreneurship and innovation. ✨ As an organization, we support refugees, asylum seekers, and other migrants in employment, skills development, and entrepreneurship. Our passion lies not only in support but also in providing a range of services including mentoring, training, and networking opportunities. ✨ The founding beliefs focus on using the employment and entrepreneurial spirit and skills to promote integration, inclusion and economic independence.
