Karliegh Fry, 8 years old, suffers with rapid-onset primary dystonia, a neurological movement disorder that causes involuntary muscle contractions. Thanks to Oklahoma Children's Hospital OU Health, she's the FIRST pediatric patient in the world to have deep brain stimulation! "Her arms used to lock up to the point we would put socks on her hands because she would scratch her neck," Trisha Fry said. "There's definitely been some improvements, even from the moment they turned it on. She is even using her voice a little bit more, and we can make out some of her words. I think she's going to have a great future for sure." Read via ABC News: https://lnkd.in/ewnJwMUm

“You know, cancer is actually really fun if you don’t have to take all the medicine.” When 8-year-old Mia Lee said these words to her mom, Nar, it caught her off guard. After Mia’s three years of fighting cancer, of chemotherapy, allergic reactions, radiation therapy, and seemingly endless days at the hospital, that’s not what Nar expected to hear. But she knew exactly what Mia meant. “Now when she thinks of her cancer journey, she thinks of her team,” Nar said. “She’s not able to differentiate between the two. All she knows is she has all these amazing memories and opportunities that overshadowed the bad memories.” While undergoing cancer treatment, Mia was connected to Tufts University field hockey through Mia was connected with Team IMPACT, Inc., a program that matches children with serious illness and disability with college athletic teams. “For parents and their kids with a serious diagnosis, what underlies their lives is a fear of their child feeling they are different,” said Joe Daniels, CEO of Team IMPACT. “They love knowing their kid is being embraced by a team and feel they belong somewhere. They see it in their child's face. It's been the most beautiful part of my experience.” Learn more: https://lnkd.in/e_aGX9kx

Earlier this month, CHA hosted our annual Family Advocacy Day in Washington, DC. This year, we were proud to welcome over 300 attendees including over 180 children and their families to champion pediatric care and amplify the needs of patients and caregivers across the country. Throughout the event, families shared their personal experiences with federal lawmakers, underscoring the critical importance of Medicaid and the need for continued support and access to life-saving care. A highlight of the week was a special “Kids and Congress” advocacy event with members of the Ways and Means Committee, where pediatric patients shared their stories. From over 130 meetings on Capitol Hill to a celebration dinner, there were many memories made. Thank you to all the families who took the time to travel to D.C and raise their voices, and to our event partners who helped make #FAD2024 a success! Together, we are making a difference and paving the way toward a brighter, healthier future for children. #TeamCHA Watch our short recap video:
