“You know, cancer is actually really fun if you don’t have to take all the medicine.” When 8-year-old Mia Lee said these words to her mom, Nar, it caught her off guard. After Mia’s three years of fighting cancer, of chemotherapy, allergic reactions, radiation therapy, and seemingly endless days at the hospital, that’s not what Nar expected to hear. But she knew exactly what Mia meant. “Now when she thinks of her cancer journey, she thinks of her team,” Nar said. “She’s not able to differentiate between the two. All she knows is she has all these amazing memories and opportunities that overshadowed the bad memories.” While undergoing cancer treatment, Mia was connected to Tufts University field hockey through Mia was connected with Team IMPACT, Inc., a program that matches children with serious illness and disability with college athletic teams. “For parents and their kids with a serious diagnosis, what underlies their lives is a fear of their child feeling they are different,” said Joe Daniels, CEO of Team IMPACT. “They love knowing their kid is being embraced by a team and feel they belong somewhere. They see it in their child's face. It's been the most beautiful part of my experience.” Learn more: https://lnkd.in/e_aGX9kx

Childhood cancer affects children of all backgrounds, but disparities persist. While childhood cancer knows no boundaries, there are significant disparities in access to healthcare, treatment options, and supportive resources among racial and minority groups. These disparities can impact the experiences and outcomes of children and families facing this battle. ~Approximately 1 out of 285 children in the US is diagnosed with childhood cancer before the age of 20. (American Childhood Cancer Association) ~Compared with Non-Hispanic (NH) Whites, NH Blacks and Hispanics had worse survival for all cancers combined (Zhao et al., 2021) ~Compared with NH Whites, NH Black and Hispanic patients with childhood cancer were more likely to be uninsured (Zhao et al., 2021) ~Clinical trial participation rates have been low for minority children with cancer (Zhao et al., 2021) ~Non-white childhood cancer patients were more likely to be in lower socioeconomic strata, facing challenges in accessing and affording healthcare (Zhao et al., 2021) Shockingly, some studies indicate that minority children are often diagnosed with cancer at later stages, leading to more challenging treatment journeys and lower survival rates. Additionally, disparities in access to clinical trials and specialized treatment centers can contribute to varying outcomes among racial and ethnic groups. At Rubix Life Sciences, we're dedicated to addressing these disparities head-on. Our commitment to advancing clinical trials and innovations in pediatric cases ensures that every child, regardless of background, has access to cutting-edge treatments and the best chance at a brighter future. 💪💛 #ChildhoodCancer #GoGold #KidsCancer #CancerAwareness #ChildhoodCancerAwareness #ChildhoodCancerWarrior #FightForACure #PediatricCancer #CancerSucks #HopeForACure #GoldStrong #ChildhoodCancerResearch #BeBoldGoGold #CancerHeroes #CureChildhoodCancer #SupportKidsWithCancer #BraveLittleWarrior #NeverGiveUp #MoreThan4 #AwarenessMatters

🎗️ February's National Cancer Prevention Month emphasizes the importance of informed cancer screening decisions for older adults. 🎗️ Screenings for cancers such as breast, cervical, colon, and prostate are crucial but should be based on personal discussions between patients and healthcare providers, considering health status and preferences. Guidelines now stress the balance between screening benefits and the risks of over screening, especially for those over 75. As caregivers, let's support our loved ones in making these personalized decisions guided by the latest recommendations and their individual needs. Together, we can navigate the path to prevention with care and understanding. #NationalCancerPreventionMonth #Caregiving #InformedChoices

Director of Programs and Community Outreach at Bright Spot Network, Psychotherapist & Long-Term Lecturer at UW-Madison
Thanks for sharing your story and insights Haley. Whether we work with families facing cancer or have friends and family trying to navigate a diagnosis, we can all benefit from these tips.
There is no roadmap for parenting with cancer. It can feel daunting at best to navigate everything that comes alongside a cancer diagnosis (i.e. never ending doctor's appointments, calls to insurance, blood draws, extra financial stress, treatment side effects, second opinions, travel to clinics... and more, you get it) all while when also trying to parent little kids. Parent's plates are already so full; cancer can make it overflow. I hope that these tips are helpful for those newly diagnosed or for those in the thick of it. Thank you to the Patient Empowerment Network for lifting up the experience of parents with cancer and letting me share a little of my story.
