Today, Vivek Murthy and his team issued an advisory on firearm violence. https://lnkd.in/g4JqCn3Y During my time working on the South and West sides of Chicago, where students experienced recess indoors for fear of stray bullets, and here in DC with Tia Bell and the @TRIGGER Project, a few things are clear. This issue has increased in its breadth and impact, with more mass shootings and deaths from gun violence than days in the year, and Black populations in urban areas experience violence at the highest rates. Second, prevention requires both policy and programmatic approaches that, while complex, can be straightforward. Prevention and repair involve fostering social connections and building community. When individuals feel connected and have supportive networks, they are less likely to engage in violence. Programs focused on mentorship, youth engagement, and community-building are essential. Additionally, policies addressing systemic inequities and providing resources for mental health, education, and economic opportunities are crucial. Community organizations and local leaders are pivotal in this process. Supporting these grassroots efforts ensures environments where safety and connection are prioritized. Addressing firearm violence requires a multifaceted approach, including stricter gun control laws, improved data collection, and comprehensive support for victims and their families. Combining policy changes with community-driven programs can help create a future where all children can play outside without fear, and neighborhoods can thrive in safety and solidarity. Last year Jillian Racoosin Kornmeier, MPH shared some insights on the The Coalition to End Social Isolation & Loneliness blog, about the relationship between gun violence, social isolation, and loneliness. https://lnkd.in/gfihtj_6

As #BlackHistoryMonth unfolds, let's talk numbers and impact. Despite heart disease being a leading cause of death among African Americans, only fewer than 3% of cardiologists are Black, as reported by the Journal of the American Medical Association. VitalSolution is committed to supporting diversity in the medical field because representation matters.
