  • #Lead can be harmful to humans. Exposure to lead can cause serious adverse health effects, including delays in physical and mental development. #DTSC visited numerous plumbing supply retailers throughout #California and found that each of the stores we visited were selling lead solder that contains up to 60% lead. In some cases, the lead solder was labeled as electrical solder and in some cases it was not. Regardless, the law prohibits the sale of solder or flux that does not meet the "lead free" definition, by any person engaged in the business of selling plumbing supplies. Learn more about how “Lead-Free” is defined here: https://lnkd.in/eT72Jcd9 California Health & Safety Code, section 116875, subdivision (b) prohibits the sale or introduction into commence of pipes, pipe fittings, plumbing fittings, fixtures, and all other devices intended to convey or dispense water for human consumption that do not qualify as “lead free.” Retailers that are currently selling plumbing materials shall immediately remove from sale any plumbing supplies that are not “lead free” in compliance with the Lead in Plumbing Law, with emphasis on the lead solder we have seen for sale throughout the state. Solder that is not “lead-free,” that are handled as wastes, very likely exhibit the hazardous waste characteristic of toxicity for lead, and must be managed (stored, transported, and/or disposed of) in accordance with state and federal hazardous waste regulations. Other plumbing materials that are not lead free may also exhibit the hazardous waste characteristic of toxicity for lead. A waste determination should be made on those items to be disposed of so that they can be managed in accordance with state and federal hazardous waste regulations. • Hello! 👋 This #EffectiveCommunicationsMonth, we wanted to remind our fellow #Californians that we are listening; #communication is a 2-way street! We are committed to protecting people & the environment from exposure to hazardous waste by investigating & enforcing hazardous waste laws & regulations. #California laws & regulations pertaining to handling, storage & management of #HazardousWaste are the most stringent in the country. It’s crucial that facilities adhere to the laws & regulations to protect people & the environment from #toxic harm. So, #LinkedIn audience, we ask… 👀 If you see something, do your part / help us out & say something! 👁🗨 We take all allegations seriously & routinely inspect facilities subject to the Hazardous Waste Control Law (i.e. Treatment, Storage and Disposal Facilities, Universal Waste Collection Facilities, etc.) to ensure they adhere to the rules designed to protect our people & communities.

  • According to the US Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, [garbage collection] continues to rank in the top 10 deadliest jobs in the USA. Throwing #HouseholdHazardousWaste (HHW) in the trash is one of the dangers associated with the job, posing a constant #WorkplaceSafety risk to this essential #Californian workforce. To reduce potential risks associated with HHW, it’s imperative to handle, transport & store it correctly. Improper disposal of HHW can include pouring it down the drain, onto the ground, into storm sewers, or throwing it out with your regular household garbage. Though the dangers of such disposal methods aren’t immediately obvious, improper disposal of HHW can pollute the environment & pose a threat to #HumanHealth. Improper disposal can also contaminate our septic tanks & wastewater treatment systems if poured down drains or toilets, and, in addition to risking physical injury of our sanitation workers, improperly stored HHW poses a risk to children & pets. 🙏Help us protect our fellow #Californians & the environment from #toxic harm by educating yourself & spreading the word. https://lnkd.in/eNBJ6pR4 #NationalSafetyMonth #WorkplaceSafety #ToxicTrash #HazardousWaste #CleanUpCalifornia
