#DTSC is committed to community participation, transparency & ensuring that impacted communities are protected: ➡ More than 40% of all inspections, complaint investigations & enforcement actions take place in #California communities most burdened by pollution. ➡ DTSC’s #EnvironmentalJustice Plan makes protecting, safeguarding, & restoring these communities a priority. ➡ Our #PublicParticipation Program conducts a variety of outreach activities designed to inform & engage the public in our department’s decision-making. We are always on the lookout for more effective ways to enhance public participation, particularly in communities disproportionately burdened by pollution. ➡ We use social media to inform the public of pending issues, decisions & upcoming events. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gFj4GWs We aim to engage with you in a way that gives those most affected by our decisions the most opportunities to voice their concerns & ask questions. How can we improve our communication with you? Is there anything specific that you’d prefer we share more, or less of?

Freshwater recently collaborated with Clean River Partners, the University of Minnesota and other local organizations to gather input from 190 Minnesota residents about their thoughts on drinking water. This will help inform the Minnesota Drinking Water Action Plan being developed by the Minnesota Department of Health. Here are some key insights: 💧Approximately two-thirds of participants supported the development of new state drinking water standards for Minnesota, which would be stricter than federal standards. 💧A majority of respondents expressed trust in their tap water. However, approximately 20 percent of survey participants expressed distrust in their tap water, with the most common concerns being contaminants, chemicals and water hardness. 💧When doing statewide community engagement, it is imperative to collaborate with local partners who can reach specific communities and provide cultural context. 💧Emphasizing cultural sensitivity and awareness, respecting the distinct needs of tribal partners, attending to the diversity of languages spoken, and prioritizing communication accessibility are all vital practices when engaging community members. Evicting vulnerable people from wetlands in developing countries necessitates a robust approach to social justice to ensure fair treatment and sustainable outcomes. Forced evictions without adequate support can lead to severe socio-economic repercussions, including loss of income, housing, and community. Therefore, it is crucial to implement policies that balance environmental conservation with human rights, providing resettlement options, compensation, and access to alternative livelihoods. Ensuring that these communities have a voice in the decision-making process is vital to achieving equitable and just solutions that protect both the environment and the people who depend on it.

In our #newreport, we identified that the #EPA took a largely siloed approach to identifying and addressing disproportionate health effects for disadvantaged communities surrounding the 35th Avenue Superfund site in North Birmingham. This approach potentially limited the Agency’s ability to address cumulative impacts and prevents the EPA from fully assessing its progress in achieving equity and environmental justice.
