🇪🇺 We are welcoming the adoption of the revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive #EPBD by European Parliament today. It will make EU homes better for climate and better for people: safer, healthier and more energy efficient. 👏🏼 We are grateful to Ciarán Cuffe (Greens/EFA, Ireland 🇮🇪) for his long-standing commitment to fire safety in the European Parliament and his support of our #KeepEUFireSafe campaign. In Mr Cuffe’s endorsement of the manifesto ‘𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗨 𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀’, he noted that “unfit homes pose a greater fire risk and that’s why we need to upgrade the energy performance of our buildings and their fire resilience, at the same time. Increased electrification in our buildings also carries some fire risk, and that’s why it’s so important to ensure that building renovations are carried out professionally and to the highest possible safety standards." As electrical safety is inseparable to fire prevention, we will come forward with further comments how the new EPBD can address those concerns. ℹ 🔗 For more information, please visit: www.keepeufiresafe.org ANEC European Fire Safety Alliance Fire Safe Europe (FSEU) Modern Building Alliance Euralarm RICS Pinfa, a sector group of Cefic Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) Renovate Europe Europacable BSEF EAPFP - European Association for Passive Fire Protection IWMA International Water Mist Association CoGDEM Concrete Europe Theresa Griffin Quentin de Hults Olivier Tissot Benoît Dôme #FireSafety #FireProtection #euelections2024 #eugreendeal #energypoverty Green Party of Ireland / Comhaontas Glas European Parliament The Greens/EFA in the European Parliament Federation of Young European Greens (FYEG) Green European Foundation Global Greens

The strategic use of environmental hazards as a proactive tool for enhancing community safety is often overlooked in traditional public safety measures. This approach, blending psychology, economics, and security expertise, involves modifying or utilising existing environmental elements to increase the difficulty or risks associated with committing a crime. In Australia, this approach has been implemented in various contexts, such as bushfire management and controlled burns in areas prone to arson. Urban settings are designed to maximise natural surveillance and minimise hidden spots, deterring potential criminal activity. Community involvement is pivotal to this strategy, as it increases awareness and fosters a sense of collective responsibility toward maintaining a safe environment. The collaborative approach requires law enforcement, urban planners, environmental scientists, and community leaders to design functional and secure spaces. Successful environmental hazard strategies have been implemented in several Australian cities, such as Darwin, where redesigning urban parks and alleyways with greater lighting and CCTV has led to a noticeable decrease in incidents of muggings and vandalism. The integration of technology with environmental hazard management presents new opportunities but also raises ethical questions regarding privacy and the extent of surveillance in public spaces. Security personnel advocate for a holistic approach to safety, incorporating environmental factors into their strategies. The City Safe program and public order response units have reduced the expectations of harm and violence in patrolled areas. #security #safety #securitytraining #securitydesign #environmentaldesign #environmentaledeterrence #environmentalhazards #psychology #behaviour #cpted
