Ice in a footprint on Walthamstow Marshes back in January.

Happy holidays and an excellent and healthy 2022 to all!

four shots combined

I looked up from eating ice cream with my grandkids one late evening on the main street of Estes Park and saw this glowing flower in front of an alley display of metal animal shapes. The light, shadow, and shapes were music to my eyes. The ice cream was also incredible.

Caught up in the frost...

(A short series of photos of pockets of air trapped beneath a thin sheet of ice in a flooded gully. The surface of the ice was scattered with fallen Larch needles. )

For Smile on Saturday: “Ice cream”

I bloody love this images of a massive iceberg. Taken from a boat as I was bobbing up and down Jökulsárlón is a glacial lagoon, bordering Vatnajökull National Park in southeastern Iceland. Its still, blue waters are dotted with icebergs from the surrounding Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier, part of larger Vatnajökull Glacier. The Glacier Lagoon flows through a short waterway into the Atlantic Ocean, leaving chunks of ice on a black sand beach. In winter, the fish-filled lagoon hosts hundreds of seals.

Away for a few days, and when I came back, there it was... a little work of art waiting on my window...

Do you want play with me? XD

Photographed in the Kallahti nature reserve in Helsinki in mid-March. A warm week (+5 °C) with rains melted the snow from the sea ice and accumulated water in puddles. The freezing weather that followed this made the ice surface really smooth, bringing out the features of the ice flowers well. Trip skaters are excited here when they get to skate on the sea ice. It doesn't work here every winter. Unfortunately, no skaters were caught in this composition, although several of them could be seen nearby (A7R4099-3ps).
