Impact Investing Institute
In today’s world, how do pension schemes continue to create sufficient returns for their members that are sustainable over the long term? How do they manage risk and embrace opportunities? As part of our #InConversation series, our Chair, Dame Elizabeth Corley, spoke to Helen Dean CBE, CEO of Nest pensions, one of the largest UK pension schemes. Helen talks about the role of impact investing in fulfilling, rather than hindering, Nest’s fiduciary duty to their members. She shares that three quarters of Nest members, with the average members earning just over 20,000 pounds a year, not only give their permission to invest in a responsible way, but say that they expect that of their pension provider. “There is something about having a mandate from our members and connecting with them. And for me, the whole thing comes back to our fiduciary duty as trustees of a pension scheme. I just think we define that far too narrowly at the moment,” Helen says. You can watch the full episode here: https://bit.ly/49uUH2s In our In Conversation series, produced in collaboration with Asset TV UK, we talk to senior leaders in finance who are shaping the intersection of finance and positive change, and put impact at the heart of what they do. #inconversation #impactinvesting #pensions

Pensions for Purpose is currently looking for asset managers to undertake research using the OMINDEX survey in partnership with The Maturity Institute. We recognise that finding aligned asset managers on the integration of purpose and stakeholder value is a crucial piece of the puzzle in ensuring their impact on people and planet is integrated. This is about integrity - the ability to say that your words match your actions and that you’re not afraid to ask difficult questions of yourselves. The Maturity Institute's Total Stakeholder Value (TSV) model is a leadership and management tool that links data: Human Value, Business Value and Impact. We are all on a journey and this is an opportunity for us all to learn and grow. If you are one of our asset manager members or an asset manager just interested in going through this process, please contact me directly - Charlotte.oleary@pensionsforpurpose.com. While asset managers may have their own surveys and monitoring tools, nothing beats an independent review. If you are a trustee or investment consultant, please encourage your asset managers to consider this. #totalstakeholdervalue #impact #purpose #integrity

Continuing our theme of this week's podcast and blog release, one excellent resource for someone looking to have an impact with their investment portfolio is a peer network or community of other impact investors. Having a network of like-minded individuals who are also aligning their investments with their values can provide numerous benefits: 1. Sharing strategies and advice: Other impact investors can offer guidance on effective approaches, fund recommendations, and lessons learned from their own experiences building an impact portfolio. 2. Continued education: These communities often host events, webinars, or discussions to help members stay up-to-date on the latest trends, regulations, and opportunities in the impact investing space. 3. Accountability and motivation: Surrounding yourself with peers pursuing similar goals can help keep you motivated and accountable to your impact objectives over the long-term. 4. Access to investment opportunities: Some peer networks provide access to exclusive impact investment funds or deals that may not be widely advertised. 5. Emotional support: The transition to impact investing can be challenging. Having a supportive community can provide empathy and perspective. Some examples of valuable peer networks for impact investors include: - Toniic (toniic.com) - A global network of impact investors - The Investors' Circle (investorscircle.net) - Focused on early-stage impact investments - Local investment clubs or meetup groups in your area By tapping into the collective knowledge and experience of an impact investing community, individuals can get the resources, connections, and support needed to build a portfolio aligned with their financial and impact goals. #impactinvesting #financialplanning

Here’s what you need to know about transaction costs... AJ Bell Investments’ Head of Product, Richard Slattery-Vickers, provides a comprehensive summary of the components that make up a fund’s transaction costs. He also shares how these charges can serve as a comparative tool to measure fund performance and a fund manager’s execution: “…whilst it would be tempting to think that ‘smaller is better’, when comparing fund transaction costs you have to make sure that you are not comparing apples with oranges.” https://lnkd.in/ebj87EcH

Resonance Limited
Community Development Finance Institutions (CDFIs) turned ripples of finance into waves of change for individuals, businesses and social enterprises across the UK. They provided opportunity and built resilience for disadvantaged communities and those excluded from mainstream finance. In 2023 their lending hit a record high of £287 million: CDFIs now operate at 31 times the scale they did in 2003, when the sector lent £9.2 million. Their achievements reflect their ability to fill widening needs for the right finance at the right time. Here’s what CDFIs achieved in 2023: - Supported 4,546 start-ups and SMEs with £102m of loans. - 12,135 jobs were created or safeguarded. - 99% of businesses had been declined by another lender. - 371 social enterprises were supported with £119m of loans. - Households saved £29m in interest repayments compared to high-cost lenders. - CDFIs lent £66m to 85,208 individuals. - CDFIs identified a total of £601m of unclaimed benefits for 143,050 customers. Reboot
The Asset Owner Diversity Charter brought together asset owners and consultants to agree a consistent set of diversity metrics for collection across fund managers. Driving standardisation reduces the burden multiple frameworks place on companies whilst providing the necessary transparency for fund allocators to understand the diversity of the investment teams they appoint. Helen Price, Co-Chair Asset Owner Charter, Director, Governance Church of England Pensions Board, argues there is definitely a good middle ground. For more sentiment around diversity in financial services, see Reboot’s recent ethnic diversity research press release here: https://lnkd.in/e2hNKUyW #Diverstiy #Inclusion #Equity #Reboot #RebootTheNarrative
