Reboot is a working group of senior communications and marketing professionals , working on a voluntary basis to ensure momentum is maintained and dialogue flowing around race in the workplace and UK society. Only 14% of the UK working age population come from a Black, Asian and minority ethnic background, and they only represent 6% of senior positions, 5% of CEOs in FTSE 100 organisations and 3% of the most powerful, prominent 1,000 people in the UK. By using the power of storytelling, advocating for change in the workplace and sustaining the push for equality, we’ve created a platform to hear from some of the many ambitious ethnic minority professionals making a mark in the corporate world.

Reboot has done considerable research over the years, seeking the view of thousands of financial services employees. The consensus? Policies need to be adopted and ethnicity pay gap reporting needs to be mandatory. Our insights find that not only do 57 per cent of those from an ethnic minority employed in financial services feel their talents are being overlooked, but that UK asset managers are "losing business" from institutional investors because of their lack of diversity. Investment Week has reported that, following the Treasury Select Committee’s recent ‘Sexism in the City’ report, the Treasury rejected a call to ban non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) in financial services, although it did acknowledge that these same NDAs are being used to “intimidate victims of discrimination and harassment into silence”. Mary O'Connor, Advisory Board Member of Reboot, pointed out the importance of supporting victims and, in the absence of an outright ban on NDAs, providing guardrails, such as the supervision and registration of NDAs with the FCA or an ombudsman to ensure they can be closely monitored. While the focus of this report is on sexism, the importance of creating a supportive culture where victims of discrimination feel safe to speak out applies to all types of discrimination in the financial services industry. The Asset Owner Diversity Charter brought together asset owners and consultants to agree a consistent set of diversity metrics for collection across fund managers. Driving standardisation reduces the burden multiple frameworks place on companies whilst providing the necessary transparency for fund allocators to understand the diversity of the investment teams they appoint.
