I sent the Jumpstart team to spy on the 'competition'. With less than a month to go until Jumpstart's Big Startup 5K on the 6th August, we decided it was time to see what we were up against. We sent some of the Jumpstart team down to the J.P. Morgan 5K Corporate Challenge to see what all the fuss was about. What did we learn? 1. It was cloudy! For our event, we've decided that it's going to be a beautiful summer's day. 2. Everyone at the Corporate Challenge was from... corporates! How boring. Our event is going to be chocka-block filled with startup people (about 1000 of them, actually). 3. They've gone 🍌 with their goodie bags - they're actually giving out... BANANAS to runners. Okay. So the whole "let's see if we can put on a 1000 person event in 8 weeks" is actually going pretty well. Bizarrely. 4x weeks ago I was chatting with the Jumpstart team about the J.P. Morgan 5K Corporate Challenge and complaining that there wasn't a startup / scaleup equivalent... Well, NOW there is. On the 6th August, we're putting on Jumpstart's Big Startup 5K at Battersea Park. We've already had 500 (that's FIVE HUNDRED!) runners enter across 200+ startup teams. And signups are still rapidly coming in. To be honest, there have been a *few* moments when we've thought "let's pack it in": >> When councils told us we needed 6 months minimum to plan >> When we saw the volume of required paperwork >> When you realise you realise the minutiae of the logistics involved (e.g. sorting portaloos, bins, bag drops, vendors,...) BUT the paperwork is now in, logistics are (more or less) sorted and seeing the hundreds of signups coming in has got the whole team VERY excited for August 6th.
