“No climate adaptation for farmers means no food.” 🌾 From soil preservation to cultivating drought-resilient crops, farmers are working in many ways to ensure food security for us all. We spoke to Esther Penunia of the Asian Farmers' Association for Sustainable Rural Development (AFA), about the crucial role of family farmers in adapting to our changing climate. 👩🌾👨🌾💚

United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)
Info
With 197 Parties, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has near universal membership and is the parent treaty of the 2015 Paris Climate Change Agreement. The main aim of the Paris Agreement is to keep a global average temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius and to drive efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The UNFCCC is also the parent treaty of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. The ultimate objective of all agreements under the UNFCCC is to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that will prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system, in a time frame which allows ecosystems to adapt naturally and enables sustainable development.

Renewable energy is at the heart of climate action. 💚 At #COP28, the world decided to transition away from fossil fuels and triple renewable energy capacity by 2030. But what does this mean exactly, and how can we achieve it? Listen to International Energy Agency (IEA) expert Heymi Bahar explain.

The climate crisis is pushing disasters to record-breaking new levels of destruction. Whether in my homeland of #Carriacou, which is today being hammered by Hurricane #Beryl; or in the communities of some of the largest economies recently crippled by heatwaves and floods; or in other parts of the world experiencing massive wildfires and brutal droughts, we can't sit by and watch while the spiraling climate wreaks havoc. The solutions are clear: We need bolder national climate plans, speeding up the transition away from fossil fuels. We need strong adaptation plans, building resilient communities. We need much bigger and better finance, the great enabler of climate action. Events like these show there are limits to adaptation and we need a fully resourced Loss and Damage fund. We need more climate action delivery, not climate despair. And we need it now.

📢 Just launched: The online reporting tools for the Paris Agreement’s Enhanced Transparency Framework (#ETF), an essential instrument in helping countries submit their new Biennial Transparency Reports, due this year. Thanks to the hard and diligent work of my colleagues here at UN Climate Change, and our partners, these new tools will enable countries to compile their data efficiently and generate consistent reports. Let’s not forget: Transparent climate reporting is a powerful tool. Reliable data helps countries to design more effective policies and direct resources where they are most needed. It is also an opportunity to highlight successes and inspire others to follow suit in ambitious climate action. UN Climate Change will continue to provide reporting support and practical assistance to countries, allowing them to fulfil their reporting requirements accurately and efficiently. Ever wondered how Artificial Intelligence can support bolder #climateaction? 🚀 💡 Some examples: AI could optimize the integration of renewable energy into national power grids. Or it could help provide targeted real-time information to vulnerable communities to both avert and prepare for climate change impacts. If you are working on AI solutions for climate action, our new AI Innovation Grand Challenge might be for you. It aims to: 🌍 Identify AI solutions that can accelerate climate action in developing countries, in particular in Least Developed Countries or Small Island Developing States. 💪 Support the development and scaling-up of identified solutions. 📢 Enhance access to AI-powered climate solutions through an open online repository Learn more and submit your proposal: https://bit.ly/3VYBHFW

The calls for more ambitious national climate plans are growing louder. From business leaders to investors, mayors, scientists, youth activists, civil society and many more, the message is clear: bolder climate policies are essential for stronger economies and fairer societies. Meeting Wopke Hoekstra, Commissioner for Climate Action at the European Commission in Brussels, I am hopeful to see accelerated collaboration between governments in the negotiations and in designing and implementing strong climate action plans. It is also great to see business and civic leaders push so strongly for ambitious national climate plans and much more climate resilience at #LondonClimateWeek. Working together on all levels and across all sectors, leaving no-one behind, is the only viable way to overcome the worsening climate crisis. We need to step up action on all fronts. #Mission2025

🔵 Every 🟡 fraction 🟠 of a degree 🟤 of global warming 🔴 matters. This data visualization from IPCC's Synthesis Report uses Ed Hawkins' warming stripes to show how climate change affects us all. While we're experiencing impacts now, the extent to which current and future generations will experience a hotter and different world depends on the choices we make today and in the coming years. #ShowYourStripes Day!

“We’ve taken modest steps forward, here in Bonn. But too many issues were left unresolved. We’ve left ourselves with a very steep mountain to climb to achieve ambitious outcomes in Baku.” In his closing speech of the #JuneClimateMeetings, UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell called upon all countries to step up their climate action efforts ahead of #COP29 in Baku in November. Reflecting on the progress made so far, he stressed the need to leave business-as-usual behind. “Don’t leave the hardest work to the eleventh hour,” he urged delegates. “The secretariat will be with you every step of the way.” Read the full speech here: bit.ly/4eftl41
