The climate crisis is pushing disasters to record-breaking new levels of destruction. Whether in my homeland of #Carriacou, which is today being hammered by Hurricane #Beryl; or in the communities of some of the largest economies recently crippled by heatwaves and floods; or in other parts of the world experiencing massive wildfires and brutal droughts, we can't sit by and watch while the spiraling climate wreaks havoc. The solutions are clear: We need bolder national climate plans, speeding up the transition away from fossil fuels. We need strong adaptation plans, building resilient communities. We need much bigger and better finance, the great enabler of climate action. Events like these show there are limits to adaptation and we need a fully resourced Loss and Damage fund. We need more climate action delivery, not climate despair. And we need it now.

We need a safe place for high level influencers in the banking, insurance, pension and investment industries to come together, without personal or corporate risk, and talk about the things that are threatening their solvency. We will only get the right policies and policy implementation in place if we make sure that 100% of the world’s population is represented at the leadership table of COP - and that means women as much as men. We indeed need a gendered response to climate change (investment in women-led initiatives etc), which takes into account all the nuance. A methodical implementation of a Gender Action Plan would need to be an absolute priority. Only 5 out of 29 COP Presidents have been women. No wonder emissions are still rising. No amount of talking in a bubble will get us there. It is this exclusion that will ultimately kill us. Sorry to have to say this here, but the time for being sweet and nice is truly over. Strengthening Caribbean Building Codes for Resilience The Challenge Every year, hurricanes with winds reaching up to 200 mph threaten the Caribbean, causing extensive damage. Traditional building materials and designs, such as wooden roofs, often fail to withstand these extreme conditions, leading to significant destruction and high repair costs. The Solution: Updated Building Codes Recognizing the urgency, Caribbean nations are updating their building codes to mandate more resilient construction methods, focusing on concrete roofs and robust materials to withstand Category 5 hurricanes. Key Changes: 1. Concrete Roofs: - All new buildings must have concrete roofs for superior wind resistance. 2. Structural Reinforcement: - Reinforced steel within concrete walls and foundations to enhance durability. 3. Improved Roofing Attachments: - Advanced fastening systems to securely attach concrete roof slabs. 4. Stringent Inspections: - Regular inspections to ensure compliance with new standards. 5. Retrofitting Existing Structures: - Incentives and guidelines to upgrade older buildings to meet new codes.

Parametric insurance solutions and catastrophe bonds “Beryl heads towards Jamaica; parametric and cat bond payouts likely Hurricane Beryl is set to become the strongest storm to impact Jamaica since 2007, with landfall at or close to major hurricane strength expected over the coming hours. Beryl remains a Category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 145mph. The probability of US impacts from the storm has been increasing over recent days. As we analyse today, parametric payouts worth tens of millions of dollars are likely to be paid to governments in the Caribbean as Hurricane Beryl breaks early hurricane season records. Beryl’s projected path has also raised the potential for the Jamaican government’s $150mn parametric cat bond to be triggered.” You get this by understanding context and applying smarts. The WBG distinguished itself with these innovative financing instruments.

Simon do you know the difference between weather events, seasonal weather cycles and an abstract 30-year climate definition? Where is exactly climate spiralling out of control? I don't expect an answer because one never does from UN officials who post here on LinkedIn. If you post something it is an ethical obligation to reply to questions and comments. If you don't, then it is just simply climate propaganda and a waste of our time.

So the IPCC 2021 Technical Report (by Group 1 Technical people) said there was no increase in severe weather events from CO2. It was only when the political groups 2 & 3 got ahold of it and produced the 2023 Synthesis Report that the oceans were boiling. And people do realize that mankind produces 29 Gigatons on CO2 anually and nature produces 750 Gigatons (oceans, volcanoes, etc.). So the atmosphere is 0.04% CO2, and roughly 4% of that is human produced, so 0.0016% of our atmosphere is changing the weather?? There has never been any delineation of the difference between the effects between human and natural CO2, and should always remember that we have had 5+ naturally caused ice ages. Maybe a little more homework is required by some people. And feel free to verify these facts at any time

Simon Stiell okay, but what is the point of posting this on LI without tagging the fossil fuels corporations who are responsible for this? Are we resolving the real problem or just wasting electronic ink year after year? I am asking, because my way of thinking is different. If one wants to confront the demons, one needs to invite them out in the open 😉. https://www.linkedin.com/posts/marco-zorzi83_depressing-and-dystopian-uae-used-cop28-activity-7204100854138728449-YHI7?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_ios
