- Along with 75166 this was the first set I worked on. And it is the very first LEGO Star Wars Battle Pack with name characters! It is not based in any particular reference or source material and I tried to make a speeder that would look fast but also cool. The blue color was an effort to set it apart from previous speeder bikes.

- This was fun to work on. Usually in small models play features are very hard to implement and with this model I wanted to use all the available space to maximize playability and the spring loaded shooters were particularly hard to implement. My favourite detail is the ability to shoot one spring loaded arrow at a time thanks to the use of a rubber element as a trigger. It was also, I think, the first Star wars set with a trans yellow canopy :) hope Classic space fans enjoy it! Jordan S. did the first sketch model.

- My 4th set and the second from The Last Jedi. The brief was to replicate one of the Ahch-To Island huts from episode VIII and not specifically the one were Luke lives. I tried to include some play features as well as an interior. The interior reference was scarce so I took some liberties and tried to add as much as I could. A folding bed, a cooking spot, a table with a candle, a basket and a hidden compartment as well as a few accessories are all present in the set. A couple of play features were also included. The build of the hut itself had to be pretty straightforward due to the low age mark of the set so it was a bit of a challenge to depict the dilapidated and worn out look of the real ones.

- Oh, the First Order AT-ST... It's been called the worst LEGO Star Wars set ever and even the worst LEGO set ever! Well, all I can say is that it tries to replicate a very specific scene from the movie and one that, in my opinion, most kids would like to replicate in LEGO form. As far as the set itself is concerned, I tried to include some more playability with the addition of the spring loaded shooters and the platform with different levels. This is my 5th set and the 3rd from the Last Jedi.

- Yes, another hut. But this time one from one of my favourite scenes in all the Star Wars saga. The choice of tan for the main colour was mainly because it is easier for kids to go through building stages when the colour of the pieces is lighter (instead of dark tan or brown).
To differentiate it a bit from the Ahch-to Island hut but also to give it that feeling of a dwelling I chose to not have a removable top/roof. It has folding landscape and a detachable "path" that you can put in front of the entrance like the one from the movie.
I tried to squeeze as many play features and references from the movie as possible. The entrance is a bit bigger then it should but that is to allow Yoda to fit in and once again facilitate play for kids. The "backpack" solution isn't ideal as Yoda should seat lower, but again simplicity and stability had to be taken into consideration.
There is a folding bed, a secret compartment under a table, a fire pit with a cauldron, a box for storage plus a few accessories. For the firts time we have a muddy R2D2! This is my 6th set and the first from the original trilogy.

- My first classic Star Wars vehicle! I knew that designing the new classic X-wing would be a challenge and I was not wrong. The previous X-wing iterations had a very good solution for the nose part so that remained pretty much unchanged, apart from some details and of course, the colours. The hints of warm yellow was something that I also wanted to do from the beginning because if you look closely to the source material you can see that it is a more faithful colour then the previously used tan colour.
After the first sketch we realised that if you keep the S-foils open and place it on a flat surface, this would put a considerable amount of pressure on several pieces and parts of the wings. So, a different opening mechanism and a "trigger" solution had to be developed. The triggering mechanism on the bottom of the ship is only a "safety" measure, as you can open and close the S-foils by moving the top tan lever. With this trigger, when you press the ship on a hard surface, the wings will close. With this new mechanism, the greebling on top of the ship had to be removed but this compromise was a necessity.
Several options for the laser cannons were tried, but ultimately they had to be simple, favouring safety issues and building complexity.
From the start I really wanted to use white rubber bands, but for those that don't know, different colours have different elasticity limits and so the way those are mounted had to be different. Also, I was able to put 2 in the back and 2 in the front of the wings to prevent too much stress and at the same time allowing the wings to be aligned with the rest of the ships's body. This was also a must change thing.
Finally, I managed to find a solution that allows R2-D2 to be placed with the right orientation! (Thanks to Markus R. for this nice suggestion/idea, among many others!)
This is my 7th LEGO set.

- This is one of the 2 sets based on the new show, Resistance. It has a menacing shape and TIEs are very cool, so it was an obvious choice for a set. I had to work with just a couple of very early concept images but fortunately the final design on the show didn't change much.
Particular challenges was to get the wings to hold in the correct angle but also at the same time having to be sturdy enough. Being so long and narrow didn't help. At the end, to achieve this, I had to connect both in the middle section although they are not in the "real" ship. You can actually grab the TIE by the front wings without them collapsing.
Also challenging was to get the black and white pattern on the wings without using to many stickers.
Usually LEGO TIEs don't have a lot of play features due to their nature, and in this one, apart from the obvious spring loaded shooters and opening cockpit, I included a removable back section were the missiles can be stored.
This is my 8th LEGO set.

- The Tantive 4 is one of my favourite ships of the Star Wars Universe so this was fun to design.
First things first: this set is not a UCS and is not a Master Builder Series either. It's a Direct to Consumer set, a big playset that also has some display value, with a considerable level of detail and accuracy but at the same time can be picked up from the shelve and be played with.
One of the first things I wanted to do was to incorporate a handle, because the odd shape of the ship doesn't make it easy to pick it up. That was a big challenge because I wanted it to be as hidden as possible but also it had to be in the right place so it would be balanced when picked up. Fortunately I was able to put it in the radar area which really helped to conceal it.
The cockpit was also a big challenge. Brickbuilding it was considered, but it would be too complex and not feasible for the age mark. In the end I decided to use the big cockpit pieces from 75192 as they allow for more room inside and simplified the build quite a bit.
The use of the plane tail pieces as braces or fins are one of the things that I was not super happy with and I did try different solutions like wedge plates but in the end due to simplicity this ended up being the best solution.
The exterior of the ship was based on the Episode 4 and Rogue One and interior was based on Episode 3.
Maddy O'Neil did all the graphics, including the excellent minifigures, with the highlight in my opinion being Bail Organa and Capt. Antilles.
My 9th LEGO set.

LEGO Ideas No. 26
- Bricklist notes
- The first sketch I did was a bit smaller and more brownish in colours and tones. And although the goal is to stay close as possible to the original fan submission, we thought that a bit more of colour would have a broader appeal.
Like I said, we thought that a more lively color scheme would be more appealing in general. The cabins in brown would blend to much with the rest of the tree and the nougat colour makes it stand a bit more.
The choice of blue for the roofs was my personal choice. I tried brown, dark brown and tan and dark tan and they just didn't pop enough. I always enjoyed dark blue roofs so I chose to use that colour.
It may not look like it but circular stairs are very hard to make with LEGO specially when they are intend to be used by placing Minifigures. The support underneath has to be buildable and sturdy. It was a huge task just to make them like this. Another critical aspect that was considered was that from the beginning it was understood that the most obvious grabbing point would be the tree trunk. So clearance was needed in order for people to be able to easily pick up the all set. This was also the reason behind the exclusion of the "roots" that the original submission had.
The toilet paper is green because it is made of leaves :) soft ones, that is.
Underneath the cabins and just above them the amount of leaves had to be small, again, for clearance. The ones in the tree top was a challenge because more leaves or more sub-branches would make them fall with their own weight. The current amount was the best compromise between aesthetics and sturdiness.
Special thanks to Markus R. for all the suggestions and ideas (The first kids room sketch was his and I kept some of the features like the table and the overall design of the bunkbeds.)

- When I was given the chance to work on the Millennium Falcon for Episode 9, I was thrilled. The most iconic ship in the Galaxy!
Some things I would like to try and improve since the start: the gaps on the top, the position of the cockpit and the mandibles shape. The last one was made easy because of the new angled plates that work just great.
The position of the cockpit and the gaps were a bit more tricky. The cockpit position made it harder for me to come up with a decent solution for the corridor and the omission of the gaps meant that the panels would be heavier and therefore would have to be better locked, otherwise they would constantly fall.
The back was also heavily changed and for that I used the flex tubing to give a round shape and transparent blue tiles on top of white plates for it to have that nice glow.
Maddy O'Neil did all the graphics, including the excellent minifigures, with the highlight in my opinion being Boolio and of course Lando!

- It was super fun to design this set! Being such an iconic and recognisable vehicle LEGO has made several landspeeders through the years and this time I wanted to do one that, build wise, was considerably different from the previous ones. The first thing I worked on was the front. Although the flexible tubing works really well, I felt that something refreshing would be in order. So ater trying several techniques I opted for a sideway build with stickers to try and capture the intricate details. The way this section is built allowed me to have the top plates with a slight recession thus mimicking the round nature of the front a bit better, in my opinion.
Another change was the engines. Using several pieces instead of a big one, I think I was able to achieve a more faithful look. The one piece seats used before were also replaced using more detailed brickbuild ones.
And finally, a small cave for the Jawa to hide is included, increasing the playability of the set.
The graphics and the Minifigures were designed by Madison O'Neil.

- I am so proud of being involved in the Helmet collection concept since the very beginning. The Tie Fighter Pilot Helmet was real fun to design and also a big challenge. Being very organic and all black the challenge was big. The most difficult part was to incorporate the hoses. After several different things, train wheels were used along with flexible tubing.
Another challenging part was the eyes. They had to go along the curve of the helmet and at the same time they are curve themselves.
All in all it was a really fun project to work on.

- I also was responsible for the design of the Stormtrooper helmet. Since the beginning we wanted to incorporate a fair amount of studs because it would be easier to "sculpt" the shapes and at the same time show clearly that this is a LEGO set.
The most challenging part was the front of the Helmet, specially the "nose". Several different techniques were tried and we ultimately decided to use angled panels. The round side tubes were also very hard because, well, they are round and also go down alongside the helmet shape.

- Did the first sketch of this set in the beginning of 2016 and it is finally an official product. During the final design process I tried a lot of different options to work as the side builds, like several Tatooine buildings with many shapes and sizes, docking bay 94 or the Dowager Queen (wrecked ship close to the Cantina) but in the end the best and more consensual option was to include a couple more buildings so fans can also re-enact some of the outside scenes and at the same time offer play value.

- I had the privilege of designing another helmet for the Star wars Helmet Collection and this time was the ominous Darth Vader. It's a complex shape, specially around the front of the helmet. I was never totally happy with the grill part in the "mouth", that should extend to the bottom of it. But having an extra sticker or deco would leave an unavoidable ugly black line in the middle. Between the 2 options we felt that the current one was the best solution. I tried to brick built it, but it just didn't work satisfyingly in this scale.
Like the previous helmets, we always try to strike a balance between studs and stud-less areas and in this case, we thought that the outer shell of the helmet worked better with studs. It clearly shows the LEGO DNA and also allows for easier sculpting of round shapes.

- This was fun to design and also challenging in some parts.
The wings were a bit of a nightmare because of the multiple layers. Making it easy to build by a 9 year old was not easy.
Then there is the 2 elephants in the room: the gaps on the cockpit and the lack of landing gear.
The cockpit had to be able to accommodate 2 figures, with helmets and jet packs. This meant that they had to seat straight inside the cockpit. And for that, the Minifigure arms have to fit inside the 4 available modules in width, so the sides of the cockpit where lower, leaving an unsightly gap. So, sadly, the gap was a compromise in favour of 2 Minifigures fitting inside the cockpit.
A retractable landing gear, that was sturdy enough, would always be tricky here because it would always get in the way when you rotate the cockpit in flight mode. We chose tot to put one for the sake of simplicity.

- Where does the Darth Vader meditates? On his chamber of course. Built almost exclusively for display the canopy does have the ability to go up and down, so fans can display it either closed or in open mode.
The canopy function also means that some gaps are present to allow for a smother integration when moving it up and down. Perhaps some of them could have been smaller, but we felt that most fan will display it in open mode, so those wouldn't be as noticeable.

- Being a massive fan of the show, I was super happy to be tasked with this one. There are a ton of Easter eggs on the set, some very obvious but others not so much :) Brent Waller did a fantastic job with the original submission! Maddison O. and Crystal F. did the decorations and the Minifigures.

- An open face helmet, a first in LEGO's Star Wars Helmet collection, Red Five was very challenging to design. Specially the top fin, with white on top, red on the sides and a yellow line across it. The visor was also challenging and some decisions had to be made, namely the use of a bigger round element. When using a lot of layered transparent parts, lines become more visible and the result is less satisfactory in my opinion. The helmet is also tilted back, just like it would be if it was a real helmet in a pole. This was necessary because of the way the red fin part is designed (attached to the central core of the build) We did try to have it tilted forward, but it would require a much more complex build and would potentially put the integrity and stability of the model in jeopardy. Several "filling" solutions were tried like a black head, transparent elements and a few more, but ultimately we decided to make it hollow. Having internal padding, a mic and a chin strap really helped composing the final result. I made a special effort to try and make the inside as dark as possible, so almost no bright color elements are in sight. Graphics were made by Madison O'Neil.

- This is the latest set that I designed and it is raising a lot of question marks on the community, but I got to say that it was really fun to design! :) It’s nice to work on a vehicle that we’ve never done before.
Definitely it was a big challenge to find a way to place the outer cables snugly in the Landspeeder's bonnet and the engines were also tricky due to their shape.
Maddy designed the awesome Minifigures and decals.

- By far, the most challenging set that I had to design. It's not easy to build such an organic character and one with fur, on top of it. Still, I am quite happy with the final result.
From the start, the idea was to have very limited articulation, if any at all, due to the unsightly gaps that would be required.
