Program Overview

The GRI Research Institutes were created to support NYU full-time faculty and doctoral candidates, based in New York City, who wish to have NYU infrastructural support while conducting research abroad. They are co-located at specific NYU Global Academic Centers,  satellite campuses, as well as a standalone research center.  Faculty should be on leave and have extramural funding OR not scheduled to teach in a given semester, and have access to additional funds. Doctoral candidates should be on fellowship or have other external support. Departmental approval/support is required for all those that will participate.

This research-in-residence fellowship opportunity offers participants an academic NYU “home” and an opportunity to participate in life at a Global Academic Center. Each Research Institute will draw together a diverse group of university faculty and graduate students, with priority given to those who have a research-related need to be in a given location (archives, collections, colleagues, etc.), and/or are applying for the first time. Scholars may hold one GRI fellowship per academic year. Fellowships must meet the minimum length requirements. Faculty fellowships begin at 3 weeks in length. Student fellowships must be at least 4 weeks long. As this is a research-in-residence program, it is open to those that will utilize their office on a regular basis, and maintain a presence at the Academic Center.

What's Included:

Faculty and graduate student fellows at GRI Research Institutes are given office space, modest administrative support, one round-trip, economy ticket from New York to the site (within budget, to be booked through the GRI program), and a flat-rate per-diem subsidy intended to partially defray living costs.

Per diem rates for the Research Institutes are as follows: Athens, Berlin, Florence, London, Madrid, Paris, Prague, Shanghai, and Tel Aviv are set at $75 per day; Washington, D.C. is set at $70 per day. The per diem may not exceed 90 days.

Who’s Eligible
  • Faculty: Full time and continuing contract faculty.
  • Students: Matriculated Doctoral Candidates from all departments (PhD, EdD, JD)
When
  • Spring, Summer, and Fall semesters.
What are the Research Institutes:
  • Spring/Fall: Athens, Berlin, Florence, London, Madrid, Paris, Prague, Tel Aviv, Shanghai, & Washington, DC.
  • Summer: Florence, Prague, Tel Aviv, & Shanghai.
Note that faculty applicants are prioritized during summer semesters.

Important Notes to consider before applying:

  • The length of residencies during the academic semester must meet the minimum requirement of three weeks for faculty and four weeks for student fellowships.
  • The maximum length of a fellowship is dictated by local immigration regulations. In the case of London and Washington, D.C. the maximum stay may be as long as one semester; in Athens, Berlin, Florence, Madrid, Paris, Prague, Shanghai, and Tel Aviv, it is typically 89 days. Immigration requirements  vary based on the  country, and the nationality of each traveler. Fellows are responsible for knowing these prior to travel, and working with an outbound advisor at OGS to plan travel within legal limits.
  • Faculty and graduate student fellows may not seek employment, teach, or engage in other significant professional commitments while they are in residence.
  • As this is a research-in-residence program, all fellows are expected to be present at the institute on a regular basis (at least 3 times per week), and are required to attend any GRI meetings during the semester. As such:
    • This program is not appropriate for those who have office space elsewhere, or do not need office space.
    • It is not appropriate for anyone planning extensive travel, or those who will not be based in the city.
  • Fellows are required to have access to additional funds in order to participate in the fellowship program. This is because the per diem is not sufficient to entirely support the scholar while away. This can be extramural funding, grants, partial salary (for faculty) or access to personal funds.
  • This program does not provide housing for its participants.
  • GRI will not provide reimbursement for travel already purchased or a ticket for a different trip.
  • This program neither identifies nor subsidizes local schooling options for dependent children of participants.
  • Any person who is involved in an externally funded research program, or is designated a principal investigator in a federally funded program, must consult with the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) before participating in the GRI research institutes abroad.
  • If you have a disability and have questions about a location or institute prior to applying, please contact the Moses Center for Student Accessibility (CSA) at (212) 998-4980 or mosescsa@nyu.edu. We strongly encourage you to contact CSA as far in advance as possible to assist you in making an informed decision.
