Program Overview

This program supports doctoral candidates during the advanced writing stage of their dissertations. It consists of intensive, six-week workshops, the goal of which is to get students as close to finishing and filing their dissertation as possible.

Doctoral students from all fields and disciplines are welcome to apply to these workshops. They are held at GRI Institutes in Berlin, London, Madrid and Washington, D.C.. Each location will host an average of six doctoral students

These workshops provide participants with a quiet space to write without interruption, along with a community of peers, in order to make substantial progress. A faculty advisor will be on-site to provide general advice (and moral support). The structure of each workshop will be determined by the needs of the group. Students can expect to participate in weekly workshop-style discussions led by the advisor, as well as one-on-one meetings. Students are expected to be in the final write-up stages and thus not need any topic-specific research support.

What’s included:

Travel support to the city, a flat-rate per diem, student housing, a dedicated work space, the support of an on-site advisor, along with regular meetings and social activities.

Participants in the summer dissertation workshop will have travel support, and dormitory housing provided.  A flat rate per diem subsidy, set at $50 per day, will also be provided to defray other costs. Participants will share office space and have modest administrative support during the course of the program. Participants in the dissertation workshops will be required to commit to work intensively and exclusively on the writing of their dissertations. They are also required to be in full-time residence without the interruption of family or friends.

Who’s Eligible

Doctoral Candidates from all fields  (Phd, EdD, etc.)  in the advanced stages of dissertation writing.

As this program is for those that are working on finishing up their dissertations, we strongly recommend that students apply only after  they have completed two or more chapters and plan to defend in the following fall or early spring semester.

Fellowship Length

6 weeks. Monday, June 3 to Friday, July 12, 2024.

Location

The GRI Institutes located at the NYU Berlin, London, Madrid, & Washington, DC Academic Centers

Important Notes to consider before applying:

  • This program is intended for students who aim to file their dissertations no later than the end of the following fall or early spring. Those not on this timeline may apply for a future year.
  • Participants must be available to check into the dormitory on the Saturday before the program begins and stay for the entire workshop, checking out the Saturday it concludes.
  • Participants must be in attendance for the entire duration of the program, and be in residence at the Institute during the week. It will not be possible for participants to travel during weekdays.
  • To minimize distractions, applicants should choose a city where they have no previous experience. (Former GRI fellows can expect to be placed in a site where they have not held a fellowship.)
  • Housing is intended for workshop participants only. Overnight guests are not permitted.
  • As this program is intended to lead towards  the last step in a doctoral candidate's journey, students are ineligible for further GRI student programming after attending a summer dissertation workshop.
