Our Mission

The Communications, Marketing & Media Relations Office (CMMO) manages the public awareness efforts of the association, delivering key messages to external audiences about the value of libraries and library professionals. CMMO also communicates ALA's key messages through media relations and crisis communications, and offers public relations counsel and editorial services. Tools are also developed and shared with librarians to help advance ALA’s strategic directions.

Committees and Groups

To carry out its mission, CMMO partners with a ALA Committees and member groups:

Public Awareness Committee

I Love My Librarian Award Committee

ALA Branding Workgroup

Events

Each year the American Library Association (ALA) honors books, videos, and other outstanding materials for children and teens

The I Love My Librarian Award invites library users to recognize the accomplishments of exceptional public, school, college, community college, or university librarians.

It's an annual time dedicated to celebrating our nation's libraries and library workers' contributions while promoting library use and support.

The campaign started in 1987 as a response to then Secretary of Education William Bennett, who stated, “Let’s have a campaign … Every child should obtain a library card and use it.”
