The Esplanada dos Ministérios is the Avenue where you can see the most iconic builinds of Brasilia. The Cathedral, the ministeries, the Itamaraty, the Justice Ministery and of course the 3 Powers Square (National Congress, Supreme Court and the Presidential Palace)

Bizarre "futuristic" planned city frozen in 1960s brutalism. Including several buildings under 20 years old. Most of it falling apart, with the exception of the beautiful palaces. Walk around for free when it's overcast as there is minimal tree cover.

I honestly wasn't expecting much more from the esplanade than rows of monotonous (though iconic) modernist office slabs on either side, as I hurried by foot and by bike on my way to Three Powers Plaza. I ended up using this route Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and actually was pleasantly surprised in numerous ways. First, simply walking along the esplanade provides a nostalgic feeling, as you can't help but envision these green-louvered towers rising from the harsh cerrado landscape in the late 50s. The trees lining the ministry buildings along the esplanade have grown to maturity since those decades, however, providing some very nice (and unexpected) shade. Beyond this, on weekdays the shaded esplanade actually becomes home to various vendors selling food to the workers, providing some streetlife (yes...shockingly some streetlife in Brasilia!) along the esplanade. Though quiet on weekends, it still provides a pleasant stroll and feels quite safe during the day.

The monotonous 'Esplanada dos Ministerios', a row of a several similar blocks on both sides of the monumental axis is quite a letdown after seeing the buildings around the 'Praça dos Tres Poderes' or the cathedral. But Oscar Niemeyer obviously had political reasons for constructing the offices for the ministries this way, since they had been known for a lot of infighting in the old days and this way there was an equality already given by the architecture. And the ministries with their mainly administrative functions were on purpose no match - already in architecture - to the buildings for the legislative, executive, judiciary or the cathedral, all higher offices.
But for the visitor interested in attractive modern architecture this is a boring sight and it adds to the fact, that as a whole Brasilia is not a very beautiful or liveable city, especially for pedestrians, no comparison to a town that has grown continously over ages.

The Brazilian capital is a wonder of modern architecture and at the same time it is a source of Nostalgia!!! Take a walk along the "Esplanada" e visit the main landmarks including The Metropolitan Cathedral & The National Congress!!! The designed concrete blocks with white paintings is a trademark of its creator, the visionary architect Oscar Niemeyer!!!

My review is a late one , was there in June 2014 - the World Cup . No map to be found, even on the internet I only managed to get something small to help me navigate, but they were so not prepared for the turists then. Bus stops have no numbers to indicate which buses go where you just get surprised. Books on Brasila - rescued 1in London, very limited - so use this 'body of the plane' road and cycle it or walk it - you will not only see the main sites and architecture, but you'll map out the city in your head. You'll figure out the blocks, the wings of the plane and the cockpit an the end. I count on that you know the city is built in the shape of an aeroplane. You will also discover you can rent a bike (look for the orange bikes) and cycle and on the side of the road closer to the 'wings' area you will come across hidden restaurants - where people who work near by go for lunch so that's something you will need. After you have accomplished the mission of doing the above, you'll start feeling a bit more 'at home'.

It is always worth a ride down this esplanade with the Ministries on both sides. They are part of the architectural heritage of the city. It is not avisable to walk as distances can be deceptive and the dry air is more tiring than you imagine. The view from the top to the bottom is always impressive with the presidential Palace and the Congress at the bottom.

This long esplanade is where all the minister houses are located. It's very long and wide, so reserve a lot of time if you wish to walk along it, but I do not recommend if you are expecting anything else than buildings. On weekends the green areas between the avenues get full of people and it's where most protests happen.

I pass by walking to go to many places to see the cathedral, the Congress... It will be good to observe the architecture of the building, the colors.... i highly recommended to visit it in the afternoon.
