About
Designed by Oscar Niemeyer and inaugurated in 1970, Itamaraty Palace is the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During the design conception, Ambassador Wladimir Murtinho was in charge of informing the architect about the needs that had to be addressed. The partnership was so successful that, up to this day, no structural changes have been made to the building for they have not been necessary. The structural calculation, which allowed for the construction of an impressive main hall, free of columns, was carried out by engineer Joaquim Cardoso. Itamaraty Palace was conceived with the purpose of introducing Brazil to foreign visitors; therefore, it was built only with national materials and their halls harbor works by Brazilian or naturalized Brazilian artists exclusively, such as Athos Bulcão, Alfredo Volpi, Bruno Giorgi, Frans Krajcberg, Franz Weissmann, Maria Martins, Mary Vieira, Iberê Camargo, Ione Saldanha, Rubem Valentim, Sérgio de Camargo, and Tomie Ohtake.

This palace by Oscar Niemeyer establishes a mirror dialogue between classical and modern architecture. The landscape that surrounds it, designed by Roberto Burle-Marx, is marvelous.

Covering the first three floors of the building during the 45 minutes of the tour, it was just a nice easy walk (plenty of time for what is there to see actually) around the spacious floors & also the adjacent spacious "semi-outdoor" area on the third floor (with a ceiling above but like a "porous one" of long horizontal columns with equal spaces apart) where on display except on the first floor (which is "entirely bare") are "not too many" but a number of great items: antique furniture (just mostly by the walls though maybe to showcase the "wide-open rooms" themselves), paintings of both traditional & modern styles (among which the biggest being the one depicting an assembly scene of Emperor Pedro I & his subordinates), and sculptures (mostly in the semi-outdoor area on the third floor with the most interesting among them being this golden "contorted form" of a maiden or such right in the middle of that area); and apart from the displays are also some "scenes of greenery" on all three floors (especially on the first floor where the entire width on one side is like a "mini-garden" of its own although just to look at from the edge).
And also, there's the outside of this building (with a "sizeable pool" all around & plenty of plants in the pool) which itself is a great photo spot on the south side of this "green & spacious" Three Powers Plaza where apart from this place (which is only like the Foreign Affairs Ministry or such) are the buildings for the "three powers": Congresso Nacional on the east side (with really a great view of its "two towers & two big bowls" from the Plaza), Palacio da Justica on the north side (the one "somewhat similar" in exterior design to this building and just directly across the Plaza from here) & Palacio do Planalto just shortly outside the Plaza's northeast corner (kind of a "raised-above-ground" building which is the workplace of the Brazilian president). And yes, among all the buildings mentioned, I was only able to tour this building but was nonetheless quite satisfied & was also thankful that they allowed "in-person booking" (which I did two days prior since I was in Brasilia for 4 nights) whereas there's only online booking for places like Congress & Planalto Palace (so which are harder than this place to get in especially Planalto which is open to the public only on like Sunday out of the whole week).

Beautiful building housing the Brazilian Ministry of the Exterior (State Department). The water features surrounding the building were full of pretty flowering plants. Right across the street from the Congresso Nacional.

Absolutely take the time to reserve a tour of this modernist architectural beauty! The exterior and surrounding gardens are gorgeous, but the inside is what is truly stunning! With its floating staircases, enormous meeting halls and rooms, private auto ramp for the head of the ministry, and its spectacular indoor gardens by Burle Marx, this is simply not a building that should be missed! Stunning!

Plan ahead to book a tour at the Itamaraty Palace, space and times are limited. With the help of my local guide I was able to join in the last tour of the day at the last minute, with some negotiation. The floating stair in the main floor reception hall is worth the effort, one of the iconic interior design features of Oscar Niemeyer.

A tour (free) is a must. Each floor of this astonishing building takes your breath away. Beautiful from the outside, once you’ve seen inside the exterior of the building takes on a whole new meaning.

Yesterday night ! I was driving across the esplanada dos ministérios to see the pink lights on the buildings ( supporting the pink October and the breast cancer awareness) . The Itamaraty Palace was truly espetacular! Brasilia at this place in October evenings! Truly recommended! Bring your friends and family , since is spectacular and free to enjoy !

An aesthetically very pleasing sight in Brasilia is the 'Palacio Itamaraty', already from the exterior. Due to the many arches, which surround the square building, it is also called 'Palacio dos Arcos'. It belongs to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and gets mainly used as a reception hall. Its name of Indian origin is the same as the one of the previous Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rio de Janeiro.
The 'Palacio Itamaraty' is one of the masterpieces by star architect Oscar Niemeyer, but what catches the eye as well are its surroundings, a pool with different plants on small islands, a work by landscape gardener Burle Marx. And then there is the marble sculpture, representing the five continents, called 'Meteor', a work by Bruno Giorgi.

The building is the headquarters of the Ministry of External Relations and Foreign Affairs of Brazil. It is located in the national capital of Brasília and it was designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer and inaugurated on April 21, 1970.

We visited the Itamar Palace just from the outside and during the day so I guess is much more interesting at night when it is illuminated.

Está temporariamente suspenso o serviço de visitação cívica ao Palácio Itamaraty. Mesmo assim vale a pena fazer uma visita para ver a parte externa que possui uma arquitetura muito bonita.

No site do Itamaraty conta : "ESTÁ TEMPORARIAMENTE SUSPENSO O SERVIÇO DE VISITAÇÃO CÍVICA AO PALÁCIO ITAMARATY."

Somente nos dias que não houver expediente. Normalmente está cheio e sem lugar para estacionar. Recomendo agendar a visita contudo é normal de chegar e entrar sem problemas - depende do dia e hora.
