Stayed 6 nights in April. Took the airport bus to Cibeles and then walked 15 minutes slightly uphill on Gran Via dragging a big bag. Street Fuencarral is on the right just before the huge Telefonica store, pedestrian lane, the entrance at No.17 is just a door and the hostal is on the 2nd floor with a lift. Was given 3 keys to the main door, hostal door and room. There are lots of clothes shops around and a few cafes.
The receptionist did not speak any English although she understood it. Was given single room 110 with an attached bathroom. Booked direct on the hostal website to get a discount, paid E210 for 6 nights. The room had aircon but the receptionist refused to give me the remote for it, rattling away in Spanish, until I insisted, showing my printout which said airconditioned. The weather in Madrid kept changing from very cold to warm to raining several times a day so needed to have a stable temperature in the room.
The room was small but enough. Comfortable bed, desk, closet, internal window overlooking other windows. The fridge, microwave and kettle were very useful and unusual, none of my other hostels had them so have counted one star for these facilities. But just one old sachet of green tea and one of sugar, not replenished during the 6 days. My request for coffee sachets was met with another resounding NO. Got some basic stuff for breakfast from a nearby supermarket. One plastic glass was provided for the full stay, when I asked for another on day 3 I got another NO.
The attached bathroom was clean but the shower was tiny, it was impossible to move or bend and I am a small person. One sachet of shampoo and one bar of soap, again not replenished.
Free wifi was good speed. No outside noise but could hear Everything from the neighbouring rooms.
The Gran Via metro station is just outside the hostal lane and Sol square is a 7 minute walk down so the location is really convenient to walk everywhere or take the metro. Felt very safe wandering around the area at all hours of the day and night.
Could have easily given this 4 stars but it was spoiled by the uncooperative staff. Even my request for directions to the Moncloa bus station was met with a shrug. How can you be in the tourist industry and not know the way to the main bus station? This was my first stop in Spain and the rude lady really made it harder than necessary. Dont stay here unless you know fluent Spanish and already know your way around Madrid.
