Great location on a pedestrianized street near the Gran Via metro station with east connections to bus snd train stations.

Our twin room was small but clean and nicely equipped. We faced the inner courtyard so it was pretty quiet. We really appreciated the little fridge, microwave and kettle. Beds were comfy. Great lighting. Wifi was perfect. We had some issues with our AC going off in the middle of the night but it got fixed.

Our only suggestion is for staff to show guests how to use A/C and fan/light when you arrive. We thought the A/C wasn’t working the first night but turned they hadn’t given us the remote. We were trying to use the remote for the fan but turns out we were not supposed to use…just use the switches.

As mentioned in previous comments, staff don’t have a lot of English so be prepared to use Google translate unless you speak Spanish.

I loved this place! Centrally located. Comfy room. Good bathroom. Easy to come and go. Good security. A really great value for the price. Check-in online required, which was easy to do. Payment in cash only, also easy.

I stayed here between Oct. 16 and 19, 2005. This hotel is for people who have little luggage and can handle walking several flights of stairs. There is no elevator. The hotel is on the the 3rd and 4th floors; the 4th floor being the main floor to check in. (It's really the 5th floor so you have to climb 5 flights of stairs.) The rooms are simple and basic. It's a comfortable place to stay if you plan to be out and about most of the day. Request a room on the 4th floor. They are recently renovated so the rooms are more modern and clean. The website is (-)

Pros: Super clean, new, and well-maintained. Comfortable bed, TV, closet, plenty of outlets to charge electrical equipment. Just make sure your converter or plug has a rounded end so it fits into the wall. The room comes with towel and soap. Rooms are reasonably priced. For 23 euros a night, I got a single with a shower and sink but no toilet. You have to go down the hall for the bathroom. It's 26/27 euros a night for a single with a toilet. The hotel is centrally located and within walking distance to main attractions but also near the subway (Gran Via station) if you prefer taking the subway. It's also in a great location to shop (shoes and clothing). If you're from the SF area, the neighborhood is similar to the Castro district but not as grungy. Really eclectic.

Cons: The owners do not speak English but are nice. It's noisy; thin walls and doors. The con about staying on the 4th floor is you can hear the doorbell buzzing at all hours of the day, the guests walking to and from the bathroom, slamming of doors, and luggage being pulled across the tiled hallway floor. There isn't a front desk staff so don't expect them to help you with anything other than checking you in and out. You're on your own. You have the ability to come and go as you please once you check in and get the keys, but the front desk is not open 24 hours. So if you plan to arrive very late, tell the owners you will be late or else they will give your room to someone else or not be around to answer the door.

If the hotel could fix the noise factor, I would stay here again.

This hostal is in the 4 th floor, and you can go by stairs or by elevator.

If you need an early check-in like I did, they will keep your things without any extra fee, and you are free to explore Madrid.

As a solo traveler, I’ve chosen an individual room with a shared bathroom. Although the shared bathroom was very clean and appropriate, I actually only used it for the toilet, because the room had a private shower and wash basin.

The room was comfortable, clean and quiet; wasn’t disturbed by noise of traffic on the street or by other guests in the hostal.

The room was equipped with air-con and a save (1€/utilization), but I didn’t use it. Also, there is a LCD TV, but only had BBC international available.

The rate didn´t include breakfast (the hostal don’t provide this service) and it was 25€/night and for me this was a great deal considering the location.

Usually there isn´t anyone in the reception, so if you need to speak with someone you will have to use the bell.

Be aware that, when you are doing the check-in, you will be asked to pay the total of the amount for your stay in the hostal. The lady at the reception didn´t speak English, only Spanish. Although for me this wasn’t an issue, for those who don´t speak or understand Spanish, this could be a problem.

And also if you did a change in your initial reservation, when you are paying, confirm the total amount, because in my case initially I did a reservation for 4 night’s trough their website, and then I had to change it for only 3 nights, which I did and get the email confirmation. But when I was doing the check-in, the lady only had my first reservation, and after I’ve showed her, the confirmation of mu second reservation, the total amount was rectified.

After check in, you will be given a set of keys: one to your bedroom, other to the door of the Hostal in the 4th floor and a third one, that opens the door of the building, and in this way you can enter/leave the hostal 24h/day.

If you have to do an early check-out, in the last night, talk to the lady to arrange how you will deliver the keys. In my case, I just let them in the room.

This Hostal has a great location in Calle Fuencarral, that is just near by Gran Via subway station and Puerta del Sol. It´s a pedestrian street with a lot of stores, and this is just in the border of Cuenca and Malasaña district.

It’s a perfect location to explore Madrid, because you are in the middle of the city, and you can get to Debod Temple (don’t miss the sunset there!), Palacio Real or Cibeles Fountain with a 20 min walk!

Just near of the Hostal, there is Calle Infantas, and after a 3 min walk, you will find supermarket Dia at n. 38, which is open 7days/week from 9h30 until 21h.
Although at the late night or in the early morning (between 1a.m and 7a.m.) you can see some prostitution, I´ve always felt secure and I was a women travelling solo.

So, in a nutshell, if you are travelling alone, and just need the room to rest and take a bath, and with a good location, chose Hostal Los Alpes, otherwise you would probably get better else where.

I was slightly worried when I booked my room over the phone and the lady said the only room they had left was a small room at the end of the hall that did not have a window. I did not know what to expect but was pleasently suprised when I arrived. Although there was no window in this room there was air-conditioning and a fan. The room was also larger than other single rooms I have stayed in in Madrid. Although the staff speaks no English, I found this very amusing and fun. They also were kind enough to store my luggage the day I checked out.

The place of the Hostal it is really good, in the center and next to Gran Via, full of shops and restaurants. It is on the 4th floor with elevator. I had a small room for one person, it was really small but actually was enough for me. It was clean and cozy. The price was also really good.
But everything is not nice. There were two toilets and only one was open, so most of the time I had to wait or just leave because I had no time to be waiting to use the toilet. I could hear everything from the other rooms, I woke up two days at 6 in the morning because I heard someone turning the light on and off and showering . Was really loud. That's why I am a bit disappointed. I had no fridge in my room, only a small water boiler.

I paid 26,10 euros for a single room with private bathroom. Everything is clean, there's microwave, fridge, TV, air conditioning and heater. The location is amazing, a few meters from Metro and from "gran vía", the best Street in Madrid, there's everything you need around it. The only bad thing is the bathroom is very very very small. To take a shower you can't move your body, I burned myself a lot of times in one single shower because I hited my arm on tap and changed to "hot water".

Hostal Los Alpes is a very nice hostal (accommodation only, so not a hostel!) right in the center of Madrid. It is located three minutes from the metro stop at Gran Via (from the airport about half an hour) in a quiet (during the night) street. The rooms are very nice. We had a twin room (good beds) with private bathroom and ac (it was over 30 degrees C, so we were very happy with that). The room wasn't very big, but very nice furnished an very clean. No view, but we didn't matter, we only were there to sleep. Maid service every day with clean towels. In some other reviews I read that they only speak Spanish, but the very welcoming man at the reception desk spoke English and German. And if he didn't, so what, you are in Spain! Nearby there were some possibilities for breakfast. And oh yes, I almost have forgotten to tell that the price was the best part of this review!

This is a typical hostel on the 4th (I think) floor of a building. It is located very centrally, it is walking distance to pretty much everything (center of madrid is not that big). Single room was very clean but also very small.
The street at night is kind of funky. When I left at 4 in the morning for the airport, I met many prostitutes and other weird people there.
I would say this is a great place for young people who want cheap and centrally located accomodation.
2 more things: there is an elevator and people there don't speak anything else than spanish.

Hi Maria, I wouldn t say it's unsafe as this a pedestrian street and the area is full of people, almost at any hour. Plenty of restaurants, bars, shops, etc I'm a young woman and did not feel uncomfortable walking around the area even at 2am. However, a couple of hundred meeters from the hostel (after the intersection) after 8-9 pm, there are prostitutes on the street, who are obviously dressed more provocative (prostitution is not illegal in Spain). Hope that helps!
