Amazing Stay!

Reviewed Feb 1, 2020
My husband and I just returned from a 2 week stay at the Riu Jalisco. It's been a few years since we've done an AI resort so we weren't sure if we would like it. Happy to say, we loved it!

I always like to start with positives so here goes:
The hotel and rooms are kept very clean. Yes, it's a bit dated, but the cleaning staff are excellent, especially the ladies that clean the rooms daily;
We thought the food was really good, the buffet was just as good as the a la carte restaurants;
The Sports Bar has an espresso machine, so go there for your morning cappucino;
Wifi was excellent everywhere in the resort;
The Neon and White parties on Friday nights are super entertaining and fun, if you get into it! Michael Jackson show was a favourite;
The beach and pool are lovely, lots of shade to be found, the ocean water is warm and good for swimming; nice beach for walking as far as you want;
You are able to go to the Riu Vallarta (just a 3 minute walk) and use their amenities--we went there for late afternoon cocktails in the Lobby Bar. That hotel has been renovated and is more upscale than the Jalisco.

Of course, there are some negatives:
It's dated and in dire need of a renovation. The purple and black lobby and the orange lobby bar are hard on the eyes;
Certain areas do smell. The smaller buffet restaurant has a definite smell (can't tell what it is, but you get used to it) and you can smell the disco when you walk by (it's not pleasant, and they did shut it down while we were there);
The lighting is too bright in some areas, like the steakhouse, which takes away from the ambiance;
The towel system is annoying. You have to check each one in and out every day using your card, and you can't trade them in during the day when they get wet;
SMOKE! It seems like everyone smokes, and those of us that don't, don't love sitting in it on the beach;
We ate at the steakhouse 3 times. First time was excellent, second was awful in terms of both food and service, third was average. We liked the meat at the buffets just as much. Italian was good, chinese was less than average, but I didn't go to Mexico for chinese food!

Overall, we had a great stay at this resort, the value was really very good. It's big and busy, but that's what you get for your dollar at an all-inclusive. Lots of fellow Canadians!

Resort was good, staff excellent, food good (Steak house was disappointing but when when we get AAA or AA beef at home, I shouldnt expect to be wowed when I am away.)
What did bother us was that there were smokers everywhere EVEN IN THE POOLS. My wife has an allergy to smoke and unless you stayed inside, you couldn't get away from it. should have had a designated non-smoking area beside one of the pools
Despite all the positives, we will probably not return there.

For the last 10 years this has been our favorite resort, this is no longer the case. I do have to mention the positive before I write my report. The resort is impeccable clean, the rooms are basic but clean as everywhere else. I did find many problems this time, we were locked out of our room twice due to low battery power in keyless door. It took awhile to get fixed. Our refrigerator and hairdryer did not work due to the fact that the power source was turned off. I have to mention the really lumpy pillows and towels with holes. I was disappointed with the food in restaurants, every day the same spread, they used to have a carving station with good meat. Service from wait staff was slow, not many waiters. I asked to extend my check out and front desk supervisor gave me an attitude, my response was that I was locked out of my room for 2 hours, it would be a nice courtesy to allow me a late checkout, which she finally agreed to. Sorry to say but this is no longer our favorite resort.

My daughter in law chose this resort after researching the best resorts that were wheelchair accessible in this area. (we also rented a beach wheelchair from Beach Crossers that worked out great). We requested main floor rooms closest to beach and we received this request. They were also closest to the entertainment at night, but it was all good. Just pack ear plugs if noise bothers you. Also the halls were amplified when guests came in late.
First off the maid service was impeccable! I feel so bad I didn't get her name, but I did leave a tip everyday. She did magic making our rooms spotless everyday.
The new kiddie pool and pirate ship had wonderful slides (14) in a gated off area. Very safe with a security guard opening & closing the gate and making sure no little ones got out. It's next to the kids daycare area which looked really nice also. Our kids did join in on the sandcastle contest on the beach, and made picture frames one day with them. The girls running it were great!
To get a towel you must use a towel card, and you may only use it once per day. (and if you lose it pay $30.00 each) The towel hut was off the beaten path if you were going to the beach or the swim up pool bar area. I took a couple of thin beach towels from home we used most of the time instead of standing in line & lugging around the heavy beach towels and standing in line again to return and get our towel cards back.
Also to play ping pong you had to turn over ID and to get the paddles & balls behind the entertainment stage which was a little walk. It seemed to me like they should let the towel hut which is next to ping pong handle that. And my granddaughter (who loves yoga) and I went to yoga class we were told no kids. So a heads up for that.
The next thing I would suggest to bring is bug spray, and after bite cream. Skin so soft or Off wipes didn't work. I think you need the heavy duty stuff. They were just annoying. Not even sure what area the bugs were but seemed like around the steak house at night were our 1st bites and the entertainment area in the evenings
The entertainment was good. The neon night was fun and they handed out lots of funneon things and painted faces.
The food was good.(especially the ice cream and tiramasu). No reservations required for restaurants. The staff were all really nice. We were most impressed with "Batman" who was going to school during the morning to be a PA and worked all afternoon and evening at the resort.He fixed my son when he cut his toe.
The beach was great for walking in both directions. I did see schools of stingrays early in the mornings. Make sure you do the stingray shuffle in the ocean and keep an eye out for them. We also saw dolphins playing. And 3 weddings on the beach while eating lunch at the beach restaurant. The sunsets were amazing! Don't miss them.
The gift shop in the lobby was nice also and not bad prices.
We love this area of PV. Have been several times. The Riu Jalisco was great with our grandchildren having the all inclusive & entertainment. They had the time of their lives! But for just the two of us we prefer the Villa Estancia down the beach with guaranteed ocean view balconies and being able to go into the town of Bucerias each night for dinner. But that's just us.
p.s. Make sure you turn in your room cards also. Upon check out I could only find one & was told I'd have to pay for the other one $30.00. I said I was not told this at check in and was rudely told it says it right on the card. Well the cards are all white with no writing. Luckily I found it but the front desk and check out desk could use a little educating in this area. Not a great impression for an exit of an otherwise great week.

We are just getting ready to leave this lovely hotel. I really have no complaints! Food was delicious and so much variety. Service was great, workers were really nice. Room was comfortable. I take really hot showers but noticed that the water wasn’t very hot but even that was ok. Lovely gardens, the shows were spectacular. Beach goes on for miles, water was warm. A bit rough for me so I really couldn’t swim in the ocean like I usually do but there are two swimming pools with lots of activities and prizes. Al in all a lovely, relaxing and enjoyable vacation.. I recommend this place. Great for families too.
