After trying a number of options in the South Coast's Rockley area, Southern Surf has become my go-to spot. The area boasts a stunning and vibrant beach, but it's also situated such that Bridgetown is a short bus ride away, the nightlife of The Gap is walkable and passage to the airport is hassle-free.
Other places I've tried in Rockley either seem pricey for what they offer or they're too far from conveniences. What Southern Surf offers is perfect: a clean, bright, well-kept, kitchenette-equipped room at a very reasonable rate. Above all, Southern Surf is run by good people—always pleasant and helpful. On one visit we lost a passport in a cab and Andrew kicked into action to retrieve it for us! Trudy in the front office and the housekeeping staff are similarly accommodating and professional.
While Southern Surf isn't on the beach itself, it's directly across the road—you can see the ocean from your balcony and hear the waves crashing at night. If you're on the beach and have forgotten something in the room, you can nip back over in a minute.
Being able to cook your own meals whenever you like helps with trip costs and dietary needs. Walkable grocery store options Massy and Trimart bring an authentic Bajan experience. The kitchenette at Southern Surf has everything you need including a full-sized fridge, gas stove, microwave, toaster and kettle. There's also a gas BBQ and fridge available in the outdoor dining area by the pool. With the ocean at your door a pool isn't a necessity but Southern Surf’s is a nice bonus for a more private and placid swim.
Rooms have quiet and effective air conditioning—needed in Barbados!— solid Wi-Fi that was actually accessible at times from the beach, and an excellent selection of international TV channels on an overhead-mounted TV. The mattresses were comfy and the bathrooms have been renovated with modern fixtures and a shower with excellent water pressure. Each room has a private safe, but the building itself feels very secure due to precautions on the premises and the quality of the staff.
