Just returned from a week long trip to this resort in Antigua, and once again the Caribbean has not disappointed. Beautiful weather, beautiful islands, even more beautiful beaches than I imagined. Truly the best of them!
As for the resort, and our 8 day honeymoon at Cocobay, I can only say wow!
This is only my opinion of course, every person sees things differently and it only takes one positive or one negative thing to change how you feel about your trip.
As for this resort, I give it an overall 5 out of 5 but it’s close to a 4 when you compare the cost to the negatives.
Food and staff are absolutely top notch on all levels. Anything we needed, the staff were there to help us get it. Big thanks to Marlin who always pointed us in the right direction! And Siaska always making us a special mix for the day.
There is only one restaurant at this resort, but the variety and options were great and there is plenty of delicious delicacies for just about anyone. One thing that really stood out at this resort, over any others I have been, was they had a note with our room number of my allergy to mushrooms, and at every single meal the server took the time to show me what food options I should avoid, or they would offer that entree with no mushrooms, this was without me asking at all! It was part of their overall care of the guests and I was really appreciative for that extra touch.
So food and staff- five out of five all day!
Now I have to share a few negative things:
1. Food delivery/Room service is extra cost, even if we were ordering from the dinner menu that is already presented to all the patrons and nothing additional or special. I just didn’t feel like I agree with that policy, since we are already spending an extreme amount of money, and now you want an additional $50+ to have the regular evening dinner sent to our room?
2. The alcohol is lower of the lowest bottom shelf ( with the exception of the local Rum, which was amazing). I would expect a resort of this level (and cost) to have some quality liquor, at least a good or even mid-level vodka, like Tito’s. They definitely have some good rum though. And the bartenders were absolutely amazing at making any special drink for you.
3. There are two beautiful pools for guests, but no shade anywhere if you want to be inside them. That’s not too big of a deal, but when I tell you, the heat is some serious heat, sitting in the pool can really help cool you off, but you are still burning without any shade. The entire resort is open air, so the only AC you get is in your room. The heat can get to you!
4. This is a little out of the control of the resort, but the bugs, were insane! I mean we were getting eaten up. Even using bug spray, if you don’t cover every inch of your body with it, they will find a spot and bite the crap out of you. And you never see them, they aren’t mosquitoes. Glad for the nets on our beds, bc they find their way in your room too.
5. The room/maid service often forgot towels, hand towels and wash cloths, and one time left our back door open all day, shutting off the AC and allowing the room to be a furnace by the time we got back from an excursion. We were quite disappointed with that.
HOWEVER- guys, this resort is amazing. Stunning views, and our room was extremely private. We enjoyed every moment together, (if you are a couple looking for entertainment or don’t enjoy spending time together, this isn’t your spot).
There is light entertainment in most evenings, such as a solo singer or instrument player. The vibes are very low key and calm and quiet, pretty much everywhere you go on the resort. Which is quite small. The entire place is like maybe 60 cabanas, all of them tucked along the side of a mountain. I’m in pretty good shape but several times I was gassed by the time we got back to our room, so be prepared to do some hill climbing. But like I said, it’s a small resort and everything is right there near you.
As for excursions, we took a beautiful helicopter ride around the island and over to a neighboring island with an active volcano. Views that can’t be matched.
We also took the extreme circumnavigation trip, which was ALL day, but so worth it. We swam with and handled sting rays, those beautiful creatures were literally all around us, snorkeled over ship wrecks, walked along beautiful beaches, had a very powerful history lesson of the island, and saw incredible sights and views.
We also took the Shirley Heights trip on Sunday. Was a lot of fun and it was also a gorgeous view. Enjoyed some dancing before it was time to head back.
Tips for travelers to this resort:
Bring a good book, game, and deck of cards. There is plenty of peace and tranquility. We spent a lot of time in our room together, as did the majority of the guests, lots of others also on their honeymoon.
Bring lots of bug spray, an extra swimsuit or two, and a large brimmed hat, or some kind of hat. Sometimes there isn’t shade available. If you have a portable fan and can fit it in your bag, bring it. You will thank me later, if you are traveling in the next couple of months at least.
Try everything! The food is so great even if it’s out of your usual comfort zone. Also, some portions are really small, so it’s not a big deal if you ask for more than one appetizer, main course, etc. the staff were always happy to help make the meal, or day better.
We also dined in the not included restaurant at the resort, Sheer Rocks. It was delicious food and cocktails, and just ok wine, prices were slightly high, was about $400 for the two of us for dinner, cocktails and a bottle of wine.
Overall it was a fantastic experience and forever memories were made on our honeymoon thanks to this spot.
Thank you Cocobay for an amazing vacation!
