Places to stay are graded on a 0-100 scale. The higher the grade, the easier it is for travellers to find restaurants and things to do within walking distance.
The Ocean Beach Hotel is in a great location across from the beach with a great view. The rooms are basic and i would say the equivalent of a La Quinta or similar. There is a lot of noise especially if you are in a room with an ocean view. The hotel is also pet friendly which is great however there was a barking dog in the room next to us that was less than ideal. There are many nearby businesses and restaurants for shopping and dining. The area is not upscale by any means but it is a touristy area with lots of shops. There is very convenient parking. The from desk was extremely nice and helpful. There is a nice selection of snacks, sodas, beer, wine, and sunscreen in the lobby. It is a short 15 minute drive to the airport.

The room was clean and comfy and the location can't be beat. Our issue was the thermostat seemed to be locked to either "off" or "heat" - no AC! It was cool outside here in March but the room was very warm and we would have appreciated cold air conditioning. We opened the window but there was no screen so didn't feel comfortable leaving it open while we slept. There were also no tissues in the room - should be a pretty basic toiletry.

Located right on the beach, the hotel is ideally located to all highways, resturants, bars, etc... Free parking for your car, Pet friendly as we have a small dog. 25 steps out of the roon and on the SAND. Sunsets were awesome! Would definitely stay again.

We are typically flexible with accommodations to save money. This will be a hard pass next time in the San Diego beaches area. It’s old and run down, and has the look and feel of a Motel 6. If I were paying Motel 6 rates that would be one thing, but around $200 a night no way. The only thing going for Ocean Beach Hotel is, well, the ocean and the beach are right there. Location is pretty good, although it is set up more for surfers and street shoppers. We weren’t even allowed to swim in that part of the ocean-had to walk down the beach a bit - surfers only across from hotel. We were given a room on the third floor, and there is no elevator. There is a lookout point at the end of the hotel overlooking the beach and the ocean which was nice for sunset one of the evenings we were there. We met a few nice people watching sunset. However, the other night a large family or group took up the three tables So we were basically excluded from having a view of sunset except from the door of our room, which was very limited. The two rooms on either end of the hotel overlooking the beach are larger and have great views - might make this work if the price is right.

My wife and I have stayed here many times when visiting San Diego and will be again literally just a few weeks after I write this review.
For a surprisingly low price for California, you get a good quality room (all the rooms were recently renovated) with a comfortable bed, a really cool courtyard (last time I was there I was working remotely and it was a very comfortable place to do my work!), a lovely balcony view of the ocean, and easy access to many great things in OB, least of all the Pacific Ocean just across the street! The staff is friendly and helpful as well. And if you need a quick and easy snack, just run down to the lobby and buy an ice cream sandwich or something. Pretty good deal!
The only reason I don't give this hotel 5/5 is...there's no elevator. Which I guess is fine because my wife and I each have two working legs, but it's a royal pain to lug heavy suitcases up to the third floor after a four-hour flight.
Oh...and the place is dog-friendly, too! I miss our beagle when we go on vacation, so it's nice to get to live vicariously through other peoples' pets!

When we first arrived we were intrigued by this quaint beachfront hotel. We walked into our corner room and were amazed by the ocean/beach views! The rooms and bathrooms are small but real estate is at a premium that close to the beach in S.D. so that’s understood. The beds weren’t awful but could have been more comfortable. The front desk staff was helpful and very polite. Free parking was a plus. The main negatives didn’t really have to do with the hotel, rather the area. It’s a bustling area with street vendors and performers and many homeless folks. It’s important to note we never for a moment felt unsafe. The “locals” are very loud late into the night. That combined with the loud airplanes that begin at 6:30am make for a difficult night if you are a light sleeper. That being said, the proximity to the beach, pier, restaurants/bars/shops and reasonable pricing can’t be beat! We would certainly stay here again.

This hotel has beautiful views of the ocean and the beach is right across the street. Our room is small but clean. Since we are here during COVID19 we don't have any type of services but if we need anything all we have to do is ask. Plenty of room for storage, has a refrigerator but no coffee maker.

Fortunately we’d spent some time in Ocean Beach before our weekend stay. We knew we were possibly sacrificing quiet nights of sleep for the OB vibe. It’s not your typical San Diego neighborhood. It’s a mix of not only surfers & tourists but also free-spirits and some who are maybe a little down on their luck (but are making the most of it at the beach!). We spent a little extra on the room and reserved the 2 queens with a patio & ocean view. Will do that again as I understand the other rooms are tight. Patio was perfect for people-watching (image below). No coffee in the room but I know of at least 1 coffee shop within about a block. There is a refrigerator. Room was clean. TV and wi-fi worked when we needed. Yes, there was a bit of night noise but not excessive. The beach is truly right across the street and there are several bars & restaurants to walk to. Have fun!

Wouldn't stay here again. They have NO heat. Gave me a space heater from 1980. Room smelled heavily of bleach, so they were trying to cover something. Checked out 5a because couldn’t stand the place. Ask for a manager to call me because there wasn’t one when I checked out. Still waiting for that call.

This beach has turned into a cluster of transients, and clouded of weed. The surrounding restaurants do not cater to kids, but pander to the young who are there to drink only. We could not escape the loud and drunks at night when ready to relax, surrounded by screaming drunks until 4am, without noise restriction past a certain time. Dogs were wandering inside the courtyard peeing and pooping all over the fake grass. Filthy. The fridge in the room didn't work. Never will be back to Ocean Beach.
