Woww! What a wonderful stay in a stunning resort.

After a much needed break we booked a stay at the Westin Dragonara as we had heard they had recently refurbished the hotel. We loved the new look of the lobby and the rooms.

We had high expectations after reading all the positive reviews but we can surely say they were surpassed! Our heavenly bed was hard to get out of each morning and we truly enjoyed long days by the pool. As we have a little toddler we found the proximity of the beds to the pool area really practical as we could keep a watchful eye on our toddler swimming while still managing to relax on a sunbed. It’s good to think ahead though to make sure you secure your sunbed as during the day it does get a little busy.

Food was an absolute highlight and we certainly didn’t hold back. Quadro is an amazing restaurant which has only recently opened so we were absolutely delighted to be one of the first few guests to taste their healthy menu which has a combination of local produce and fresh ingredients! The view itself is enough to draw you in but the menu complements the amazing experience we had.

We were there to also celebrate our anniversary and the staff made us feel extra special with a little gesture of a sweet delight in our bedroom.

The staff where absolutely wonderful despite currently having to work with tough conditions due to covid and all of them gave us peace of mind by constantly sanitizing my toddlers high chair and making sure we were happy. They were all so kind and friendly to him too and every morning at breakfast remembered exactly what I needed without me having to ask.

Thank you Westin to your fantastic team for an amazing stay. We can’t wait to book again and we’ll be back for sure!!!!

The staff were very genuine and wanted us to have a good stay, which was much appreciated.

Room was clean, spacious, had a fantastic view of the ocean and was kept very cool by the aircon.

Restaurant food was excellent although sometimes took a while to be delivered as it was so popular. I ate Lobster Ravioli which was delicious amongst a number of other dishes.

Malta is a hot country and was ~40 degrees when we visited, so we were surprised to discover that the rooms came without any complementary water. We think that this was because of covid however nobody on the front desk explained this to us. Also the executive lounge was closed which would of been really useful but we think closed for the same reason.

Bit disappointed that the shop sold neither food or water.

Taxi drivers that we rode with were all good hearted and not one of them overcharged. From the hotel to Valetta is EUR 15.-

Tips
a) Swimming in the sea was great, followed by a dip in the pool (not deep enough for swimming though).
b) Room service did'nt clean our rooms until late-afternoon, so if you need the room earlier, then ask them.
c) You need cash in Malta
d) If you want a first class restaurant experience, check out Sciacca for the best seafood and steaks in MALTA.
e) Visit Mdina city (old capital) and Mdina Glass - visit both shops
f) Avoid the restaurants in the Hilton, had a very bad experience with food quality

Another wonderful stay after much anticipation.

We arrived to see the newly refurbished lobby in its new glory. The blue, grey, white color scheme blends really well, and the new, chic lamps add that warm feeling during an evening dinner - my favorite was the breaded chicken 👌- in the lobby bar. The hotel has extended its terrace to include an outdoor lounge area whose views of the sea are complemented by a glass of white wine.

I had stayed in the newly refurbished rooms last year, which are plentiful in space, perfect for 2 adults and 2 children even though we were 2 + 1. The housekeepers throughout the day were super friendly and always provided a touch up of the room and top up of bathroom amenities. Tea and coffee sachets are always a welcome standard as my wife tends to drink lots of tea.

We ate at Palio’s on two occasions. The atmosphere is casual, so ideal for children, and the views of the sea calming. I had the Garganelli al ragu on one occasion... really delicious! Service with a smile and prompt to assist.

Of course, who couldn’t resist spending most of the day by the pool during the heatwave. Could have stayed there all evening, but one starts to get peckish around tea time.

Warm and friendly service, lovely newly refurbished areas, and great for families... just a pity all good things must come to an end. We will be back

This used to be our favourite hotel in Malta and we have been returning customers for about 18 years.
December 2019 we arrived for a 2.5 week stay and were looking forward to our well-earned holiday.
The afternoon we arrived the receptionist told us not to unpack because they would move our room next day since the room we were given was overlooking an excavation site!
Well ok thank you, but you knew we were coming months in advance. But it's ok we still have 2 weeks to relax, so we took it in stride.
The next room had an adjoining door, so we could hear the next door neighbours talking on the phone or watching tv etc. If you must have adjoining doors, should you not at least make some padding so that such noise is filtered?
So they moved us again. During the first 3 days we kept hearing a sort of humming noise, like someone was vacuum cleaning in the next room. At first i didn't want to say anything, but then decided to call Maintenance Services and they reported that in the room above us there is a jacuzzi and unfortunately someone had forgetting to set the timer for pump.
They fixed this and we could finally have a good night's sleep. Unfortunately someone rented the room from the next day and they were obviously happy to have a jacuzzi in the room and they kept using it all the time. The noise from the pump and jacuzzi itself was so loud that there was no hope to be able to rest.
It should be noted that the hotel itself was undergoing refurbishments. Well and good, but shouldn't you inform your guests about this so they would not book a room there for this duration if they want peace and quiet? No such information was on the website or given to us.
It's great to have junior suites with jacuzzis but again the peace and tranquility for other guests should still be guaranteed, which in this case it certainly was not!
We go on holiday to relax and not to deal with such issues. It is ok to have 1 problem, but these were persisting ones and no solution was being offered! I wrote the hotel Guest Manager, a Lithuanian, 3 e-mails explaining what was going on, and i still have to receive a reply!
We ultimately decided to leave the hotel and seek accommodation elsewhere. To add insult to injury they still charged us for the following day after we departed, even though we leave the hotel before 12 noon.
We are Titanium Elite members, not that it should matter, but especially such loyalty should serve for something, at least such status used to mean something.
All the older staff know us very well, and we have built a wonderful and friendly relationship with them all. The new staff, especially the new Guest Manager, seem to be more concerned with themselves and their arrogance rather than in customer care. Such a pity.
Unfortunately they certainly spoilt our Christmas and our vacation. The disappointment was so great that it still hurts, months afterwards. We will certainly have to think very hard before we return to Westin Dragonara, and for our next trip we will probably try the new Marriott.

This is definitely not a hotel to stay at if you do not have kids! They have 2 pools but both are full of inflatables, balls, kids jumping etc and on one day the pool had to be shut as a kid had poo’d in the pool which although not the hotels fault did out me off using it. One of the pools should be for adults only, you couldn’t even sit on the edge of either pool to read a book and cook down without getting splashed or having a ball thrown at you. It’s certainly not a relaxing experience hearing screaming, loud noise and crying when trying to unwind!

The hotel itself is clean and at times you feel they are managing the COVID situation by ad-hoc taking temperatures when you walked in to the hotel but then on the other hand people queuing like crazy and close together at the breakfast stations sends another story. The toast section was particularly bad as this is where most people go but on a couple days of our stay there was one guy who would wait for toast to come out of the toaster before he served the next person. As you can imagine it took ages to get served! Also they had forgotten one day to put spoons down in our table and when asked for some as I had a boiled egg, it turns out that they had run out and took over 5 mins to get a spoon which is not acceptable.

Worst issue I had is that we had a 9 o’clock flight so we asked if we could pay to extend our room check out time which we couldn’t. For a 5 star hotel not having a separate room you could use and book to shower and change is poor, we were told we could use the changing rooms at the gym however there were no towels so had to go back to the pool area to get some and no room to get adequately showered or dressed, in fact there was a woman with 2 kids also not aware that she could not use another room and it was hectic and chaos in the changing room, certainly not a relaxing experience to end the holiday.

All in all the hotel was ok, I wouldn’t say that this is on a par with other 5 stars I have stayed in and like I said it you have children this may suit your requirements if you do not and want a relaxing break, then try a hotel with adult pools (Hilton next door!)

Response from Amy Micallef, Guest Services / Front Office at The Westin Dragonara Resort, Malta
Responded Aug 22, 2021
Dear Binfield55, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us following your stay at The Westin Dragonara Resort, Malta. Naturally, I am disappointed to read that we failed to live up to your expectations this time around. Our Resort has two sizeable pools, namely The Bayview Pool and The Reef Pool where use of inflatables is strictly restricted to the latter pool and supervised by a lifeguard on a daily bases. Your feedback to limit one of our pools for the sole use of adults has been noted, however this is not a rule we are willing to adopt since we are indeed a family resort. I would like to assure you that your feedback regarding your breakfast experience at The Terrace restaurant has been noted. We understand that for many, this is a stay they have been looking forward to for some time. While Covid-19 infection rates are thankfully much lower than before, we are still subject to government restrictions to minimize the chances of any further spread and, like all hotels, this has meant some changes to meal services. We know how important meals are to a great hotel experience, so we have re-imagined our serving arrangements from a standard buffet to an assisted buffet. We are sorry if we did not live up to our usual high standards this time around. It is good to read of your comment regarding our high level of cleanliness which our Housekeeping and Public Area Team strives so hard to maintain on a day to day basis. Please be assured that your departure experience has been noted and had your room be available post our check-out time of 12:00hrs, our Front Desk Team would have of course honored your late check-out request, however at the time room availability did not permit. I was sorry to hear of the inconvenience caused as we always try our very best to extend this courtesy wherever possible. Once again I thank you for your feedback and I am very much hoping to be able to welcome you back to The Westin Malta sometime in the near future. Sincerely, AMY MICALLEF Operations & Guest Relations Manager

This was the first trip away with our 9 month old baby and I could not have wished for more from the Westin. The room was absolutely ideal, as it had two sections and we were able to completely close off the bedroom at night. The baby happily went to sleep, on her very comfortable Westin cot, while we enjoyed our evening in the living room or balcony. We also had room service a few nights, and it’s areas like this that the service and quality from the hotel really stood out. The staff set up a table for us, table cloth and complimentary bread/oils all included. Despite having a night in with the baby it felt very special, and the food was also delicious. The entertainment from The Corinthia hotel also added to the atmosphere.

The breakfast buffet was sublime, I really do not know what else you could ask for as a customer. The selection of food was vast, but did not falter in quality. It was little things like the herbs and seasoning of the cooked food, or the perfect poached eggs freshly cooked. It was the best food of the day for our baby, she happily enjoyed sampling different things. While the food was impeccable, it was the staff that were the highlight. They made us feel so welcome and loved interacting with the baby. In general we felt very accommodated and at ease travelling with a young baby.

This is also particularly important given the current Covid pandemic, and here I feel the Westin really made a huge effort. The hotel was spotless, sanitising stations everywhere, temperature checking upon entry and make worn inside by all staff and patrons.

Thank you for making our stay safe, enjoyable and an unforgettable first family holiday abroad.

I would highly recommend to families and couples alike. I’ve travelled to a lot of 5 star hotels in my life for work and pleasure, and I really think the quality of the Westin is well above the norm.

This was our first holiday during the ongoing pandemic and also the sudden passing of my mum.
We arrived at the hotel and were seen to quite quickly. All the staff and guests were wearing masks, which in the 36 degree heatwave no small task.
We were then taken to our room. We noticed that the room had not been cleaned properly and some big dust spots were found. We contacted the hotel management who then managed to find us a room on the executive floor. The second room was fine with a lovely balcony to watch some amazing sun rises.
The person who designed the bathrooms clearly has no common sense. The height of the bathtub was really high, I am really fit but had to be really careful. Anyone who is old, short or with mobility problems would find it a nightmare. The shower cubicle is tiny, with virtually not much space to move. Unless u are really slim then the shower is a no go. This is the only negative thing about the hotel.
We ate in most of the restaurants. The food in all outlets is amazing and of high quality. We are vegetarians and had no issues at all. The breakfast buffet was one of the best we have had. Our waiter also made sure my daughters weetabix was ready daily. The pastries and juices were amazing, especially the chocolate orange cake. The Italian restaurant was great, but be warned, the portions are big. Food in OVRM was equally really good.
We used the reef club daily for swimming as the other pool was too busy. The reef club has great views and also good food on offer as well. It was a 36 degree heatwave when we went so spent alot of time at the pool.
The hotel is well located to find some shops and restaurants outside, but many had closed due to the pandemic. It was too hot to walk around as well.
The beach part of the hotel is not worth using as its tiny and health and safety risk trying to get to it.
Having a casino nearby is also a great evening time pass.
The hotel helped to arrange our return covid tests as well.
All the staff were really friendly and we would return again.

Only praise for Westin, from when we set foot they made us feel like we are their only guests. Room was available 2 hours in advance with reception manager personally getting key to our table and asking about our stay later. The little detail is what makes it stand above the rest, like the pleasant smell in the hotel room, a waitress getting a cushion for my son at Palio's without being asked, a request for a strawberry milkshake at breakfast coming with all the fanciness of strawberry syrup and all, gym manager offering water on entrance, a bartender at ORVM preparing a juice drink for a kid with multi colours on own initiative, a paperboat crafted by a waitress at ORVM also on own initiative... Yes the hotel is beautiful and the refurbishment is fantastic, the breakfast might be smaller in selection then it used to be pre-covid but they will do the needful to compensate eg omelette was an inch thick and a meal in itself. One cannot also not mention the kid friendliness of this hotel which easily possibly makes it best for families in Malta and Gozo. Kids are not a niusance in this hotel like in some others, but guests like all adults. All in all, the great service is what really makes it an experience of bliss. I will return in a heartbeat. Well done Westin!

We stayed for two weeks in August 2020. Due to covid-19, the hotel was considerably quieter than I would imagine it normally is. This meant we had free rein to the pools, gym and other facilities.
The hotel was clean and they took covid-19 very seriously. All staff wore masks, your temperature was checked each time you went into the hotel, there were lots of hand sanitizers and tables were cleaned as soon as somebody left.
The rooms were large, clean and well equipped. It was also quiet. I slept very well for a change!
The staff were helpful and went out of their way if we needed help.
The location is perfect for St Julian's Bay and Paceville. Not far to walk to, and there are hundreds of restaurants nearby if you don't want to eat at the hotel.
We would certainly go again.

We visited Malta for 7 nights and chose the Westin Dragonara Resort which we didn’t regret for a single second.
The hotel is well allocated, very central and with direct access to the sea.
A few minutes walking will take you to Paceville which is a little bit of a party district but also a smaller shopping mall as well as a few nice restaurants are close by. The hotel itself is not at all affected by partying people or noise etc.
Public transportation services right in front of the hotel.
It’s one of these resorts that you don’t have to leave because everything you might need is available on the large hotel grounds (if you are this kind of tourist, but you’d miss out some really beautiful Maltese sites)

The hotel is newly renovated, the guest rooms are designed really tasteful and with high quality furniture. We were actually the the first guests in our remodeled room, thank you for this @Nick.
By the way, the AC was the best we have ever seen in regards of efficiency and ease of use and noise.

You will probably need a day or two to get familiar with the property and how to reach the restaurants etc. as it’s really large.

Due to restrictions because of COVID the Westin Club Lounge (Yes there is one even though it’s a resort) as well as one outlet (forgot the name) are closed. The lounge is allocated on the top floor and offers a stunning view over the sea, we are looking forward to enjoy a sundowner up there next time.
The hotel did the best you can do to operate with COVID restrictions. Hand sanitizers Everywhere!!! Temperature check once you enter the hotel and the staff always wears a mask or a face shield and keeps distance We didn’t see one exception.

Speaking of the Staff..
They are wonderful! Really everyone was most helpful and polite. The Front Desk staff Josie and Nick, the Doormen Tony and his colleagues, Rindi from the terrace restaurant as well as the gentlemen working at the pool bar - amazing service!

They are three hotel restaurants we visited: the terrace, Palios and the Brassiere Quadro. Despite the amazing food it was the welcoming and warm staff which made the difference also here. The all over charming ladies from Palio’s or people like Amine who is the restaurant manager at Quadro and he and his team will turn your dinner into an outstanding experience.

Only one bad thing to say.
We saw some of the people working there 15 hours per day. They kept smiling and stated that it’s not “normal“ and because of Covid. Still, it may tarnish your experience if you’re receiving services by someone who is exhausted.

Be well everyone, we will be back for sure.
Thank you!
