The Good
Positano is a lovely little town with great views, generally good food and lots to see and experience. Our hotel was generally clean and the first receptionist was friendly. The views from the restaurant were lovely and the pool was nice. The breakfast bar was ok. There are a few local shops if you walk up the hill.

The Bad
The hotel is situated near the top of the valley. Although it is stated that the centre is 15 mins away either you walk along the cramped streets with cars and motorbikes inches away or you take the endless stairs. We walked the equivalent of a 50 storey building on our first day. There is a bus every 1/2 hour and a cab ride costs €30. There is little parking in the hotel and once there you cannot come and go easily with your car.

We were in room 103 and it smelled of damp, there is a severe ant problem and some towels were dirty. There were fold out beds in the family section which are very uncomfortable. Sewer pipes run behind rooms 101-104, they are very noisy and keep you up all night. The air conditioning is effective but also noisy. The hotel only has lift access for 3 levels, so if you’re on level 1 then you will be walking up and down stairs a lot. There are mosquitoes by the pool so you’ll need repellent.

Overall
This was obviously a good hotel at one stage but the standards fall well short of a 4 star hotel. Some of the staff were quite rude, so overall we would not recommend this hotel and should be avoided.

My family and I loved this hotel. The room was comfortable for a family of 4 with a lot of space, beautiful balcony overlooking the pool, tennis court, sea and positano houses/mountains. Amenities included free breakfast everyday with friendly and attentive staff, parking service, free tennis equipment rentals, pool access, etc. The hotel is more secluded and removed from tourists but also a 15 minute walk down to main beach area. If you don’t want to take the stairs back up, you can take the bus. Would definitely stay again!

We have just returned from a week at the Royal Hotel Positano. Having read such awful reviews beforehand, we were rather wary as to what we might find. However, we found the hotel to be welcoming and friendly with all staff warm and friendly especially the reception staff and the waiting staff in the dining room. Our room was spacious, was cleaned every day, had a lovely balcony with pool view and we never saw a single ant or had any problems with any aspect of the hotel. The food was good - truly local Italian food from the area with several courses and with several choices available.
Yes the hotel is a little tired and dated but it is not a big problem. Yes there are many steps to get into the town but there is a bus stop literally opposite the entrance to the hotel which would take you down or back up - or you can walk down the road to avoid the steps. However this is Positano - steps are to be expected by the very nature of the town with it being built into the cliff so avoid Positano if you can’t accept the steps!

I arrived home yesterday from a week at the Hotel Royal Positano. What an amazing week!!!!!

The location of the hotel was brilliant. Being at the top of the valley the views were unbeatable. Waking up to that view every morning...just wow!! it was a 3 min walk to the bus stop that takes you to Amalfi and Sorrento a couple of bars a restaurant and a supermarket.

There is a private staircase that takes you down the valley onto the edge of town if you are feeling spritely or outside the entrance to the hotel is the bus stop for the local bus that takes you into Positano town and back. This was a blessing when you have sore feet from sightseeing and shopping all day.

I can not fault the staff. All the members of staff, from the reception, restaurant staff and maids were friendly and helpful. We were made to feel utterly at home.

The hotel in general was tidy and clean. It is not brand new and modern but it has everything you need. The bedroom was split in two with a living room area and a bedroom with ensuite. The bed was amazingly comfortable, the shower was hot and steamy with great pressure and the towels were soft and fluffy.

The food in the restaurant was great!! I am vegetarian and I had a good selection to choose from every day for breakfast and for my evening meals.

We did not use the pool as it was the end of the season and not really warm enough but the pool looked clean, inviting and well maintained.

I read some of the reviews of this hotel before going and in all honesty I have no idea what peoples expectations are. This place is great and I would not hesitate in going back and recommending it to anyone going to Positano.

Wouldn’t recommend this place and I wouldn’t return! It’s most certainly not a 4 star hotel by international standards but closer to a 2 star.

Most facilities are outdated & don’t work. In our room, the AC, TV & safe didn’t work. The WiFi only worked for part of our trip. I’d expect facilities such as a tea/coffee machine or kettle and an iron to be available as a bare minimum - neither of which were.

Bedsheets aren’t changed (we were there for just under a week). Complimentary toiletries are provided once at the start of your stay & not replaced.

The in-room information leaflet states food purchased externally is prohibited from being brought into the hotel/room but given the hotel’s location/distance from the town centre, it essentially forces people to use the hotel’s own restaurant which is overpriced (where breakfast/lunch/dinner is not included in your room rate).

In a nutshell, I’d recommend considering/staying at another hotel (of which there are plenty), in Positano.

Also, at the time of writing, the page states free breakfast is included. It is not. It costs €20 per person per day unless it is included/added to your room rate at the time of booking - it is by no means ‘free’ though.

This hotel is basic but clean. The staff are pleasant but it has the worst food we have ever had in a hotel. We booked half board but were extremely disappointed with the evening meal each night. The food was very bland, nearly always cold and we were served diced potatoes with every main course which tasted like they were cooked at the beginning of the week and were dished out each night. We could honestly wretch at the thought of how bad it was. Some guests were bed and breakfast and while we were there a lady wanted to purchase bowl of soup to take to her room for an ill husband. The hotel told her it would be €25 as all starters were this price as were all the main courses and the desserts €20. If there had been any restaurants near the hotel we works have eaten or every night, but unfortunately there weren't. I did notice the ratings on this hotel were low for the food but never in my worst nightmare did I think it would be this bad. I felt like the chef was laughing at us all in the restaurant. He kept leaning around the kitchen door to look at all the guests with a smirk on his face. Stay clear.

This hotel was not in the best location for the town but has beautiful views over Positano and the sea. That is the best thing I can say about it.
It is extremely run down, shabby. Staff were not helpful or welcoming. This hotel was very hard to navigate and absolutely impossible for anyone with mobility issues (lift doors not wide enough for a wheelchair to enter)
The facilities advertised eg Tennis court had clearly been out of use for some years! Lots of awards on the walls from 2003/4 - clearly nothing done to the place since then...
The whole place had a "fawlty towers" feel about it.
The walls were plastered with notices saying Don't do this, don't do that, don't enjoy your stay!!

Initially we were very excited to stay here. It looks beautiful the room was large and two bathrooms for 3 women was a god send. I’m the middle of the night I was very itchy and went I turned on the lights the bed was covered in ants. I’m a huge stickler for no food in the bedroom because I hate bugs so I have no idea what drew then to our room but it was so gross. When we called reception they just sent the maid who just sprayed at them and even she was shocked about how many there were. The hotel refused to accommodate us beyond just wiping them up. To wish they just returned hours later. I’ve never been so grossed out at a hotel that charges over $500 a night.

If your reading this do not book this hotel for your stay in positano The breakfast was AWFUL we were nearly sick at the sight of the eggs. The hotel is terrible to navigate it’s like a maze and smells musty. All the plugs in the room were either hanging off or didn’t work. The bathroom wasn’t the cleanest. When booking this hotel there was NO mention that you have to walk 399 steps up the side of the hill to get to it. The pool was green as we didn’t even try it. Such as shame as our actual time in positano was great but wish we had booked an air b&b or a different hotel.

I was concerned based on some negative reviews but we found the hotel to exceed our expectations. The rooms were very clean and the staff was always working on cleaning common areas. Staff was outstanding and accommodating. If there was a negative it would be the challenge to find our way around the maze of hallways and non sensical numbering system, but once that challenge was met it was game on! The view is simply amazing and sitting out at night was worth every penny, the bar tender was very attentive as well and makes great Manhattans!

Hi, yes parking is available onsite. Tight parking and one leaves the keys with Reception. Don't try to park in the old town as their are only two parking garages and they charge a kings ransom if you can even get in. The bus service is very efficient.
