I stayed at Hostal Gala for five nights in May. This is one of the many mini-hotels in Madrid, that occupy an upper floor of a traditional townhouse...in this case the second floor of a builing located on the south side of Plaza Santo Domingo. And this location is excellent. Most major attractions of central Madrid are within walking-distance. There are an abundance of shops and restaurants just around the corner...amazing.

My room was rather basic but clean and tastefully decorated. The bed was comfortable. Wifi had good signal strength. The bathroom was in need of some refurbishing but fully functional. Staff at Hostal Gala is very friendly and helpful...and fluent in English.

There is one issue I would like to point out: Noise. In central Madrid with all its bars and restaurants, noisy nightlife goes on way into the early morning hours. Hostal Gala has good windows, but they don't keep out all of the noise. My room was facing the street, and I could sleep only with earplugs and windows shut. But other than that I was very pleased with my stay aht Hostal Gala.

We stayed at the Hostal Gala during the first week of December; first in a 6 pax apartment and later in a double room and 4 pax apartment when we returned to Madrid from a road trip to Seville and Cordoba. Both stays were great! The apartments and rooms were clean, well maintained and the hostal so well located we had no trouble getting around. It is close to the main Gran Via and easy to get to the wonderful museums in Madrid. There are a number of excellent restaurants around and shopping is just terrific close to the hostal. We were so glad to find this accommodation at an affordable price especially since there are 6 of us travelling and the cost can total up to quite a lot! We had rooms overlooking the main square and there are activities during the evenings especially on the weekends, but it was fun to be able to see everything going on from our rooms. Certainly there was some noise but not terrible at all and we had no trouble sleeping.
The reception staff, especially Irene (thank you for everything!), are wonderful. Friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend the Hostal Gala!

This is an excellent low budget hotel in a great location. Our room was clean, comfortable and well designed we also had a little balcony overlooking a square. The bathroom looked new, clean and had a great shower.

All the staff were friendly and helpful and when we needed an extra bed quite late in the evening the receptionist was very helpful and pleasant about setting it up for us and making sure we were all comfortable and happy.

The hotel doesn't offer breakfast but they have a coffee machine and snacks in the common area and can also recommend some places to eat.

The only negative was that the walls were a bit thin so it got a bit noisy at times but overall the quality, location and price of this hotel made it a great base for exploring Madrid!

I got a room behind the reception. I could hear everything they said at the reception. I Did hear that there were many who complained about noise. They have paper thin walls.
Too noisy. Too expensive (70 eur)
There are much better hostels (one located in the city center but in a more cosy area), is Hostal Montaloya (price 45 eur).
A must for this hostel. Earplugs

Paz I wrote a review Dec 2016
Tel Aviv, Israel
,We booked the hotel for 3 main reasons: location, wifi and air conditioning. Of these only the location is as promised in the details of the hotel. The wifi is horrible at best, we had one specific point in our room where it works and even then to send a simple whatsapp message, for instance, seemed to burden it and take forever. The air conditioner looks like it exists, the controls in the room seem to be those of an air conditioner, but in reality there is only central air conditioning that you cannot control at all and need to ask the reception to turn on. Even after asking for the air conditioning to be turned on, it would still be shut down sometime during the night, so we still woke up sweating in the middle of the night, nearly every night (it might be cold in Madrid, but when your room is right on top of a busy plaza, you need to shut the window as tight as possible, making the room extremely hot and stuffy). Other than these, all the hotel facilities and amenities are pretty horrific. The bed is tiny, a bed and a half at best, no where near a double bed. The towels seem to be made of a special materiel designed not to get wet and hence are pretty useless wiping yourself off after a shower ( we resorted to using toilet paper to help the process) and also they seem to crumble and leave residue on your body when you use them. The room is noisy in every possible way, the window to the street is far from sound proof, and due to its location the street is busy at night and there is a lot of noise that makes sure you can barely fall asleep. In the morning, if you managed to fall asleep at all, you will be awoken by their thin walls and doors that make sure that one person's wake up service at 6 am, will be everyone's wake up service, like it or not. The hotel's mentioned an elevator, which also technically exists, but only after a flight of stairs! So coming here with huge suitcases expecting not to have to carry them up the stairs proved false ( if any handicapped person was counting on the elevator he would be sourly mistaken). The housekeeper takes general liberty with your possessions, tossing them around the room mindlessly and pretty much disorganizing everything. The receptionists seem to be nice, and when we complained they kept on giving us different excuses to keep us from doing anything drastic , like leaving the hotel, until it was a bit too late - for instance, at first they said they will turn the AC on but didn't mention it would shut off in the middle of the night, afterward they said they will leave a note so it won't shut down - also didn't happen. Only after a few nights of assorted excuses, we've had enough (usually when we finally get around to complain, which we don't do easily, the staff will do their best to help us and not just string us along, so this was unexpected for us) and called Booking.com to complain about the false advertising of this hotel on their website (since it says it has wifi and air conditioner in each room). Booking.com were useless and didn't help at all, they just told the hotel the problems we already told them we were having and said we need to talk to the hotel staff and suggested we send picture proof of our claims (how do you take a picture of an AC not working?). We then talked to the hotel staff yet again, this time they stopped stringing us along and offered a small compensation discount (small in comparison to the sleepless nights we had) , when we stated that we lost several nights sleep and generally suffered there, the girl at the desk said she will contact the management and check if they can offer a larger compensation. After a bit, Booking called us back and said that the owner was very apologetic and didn't understand our issues, but offered us the last night for free in compensation (which is a lesser compensation then was previously offered, in an act of pure bullying) - again they were completely useless and only hurt us instead of helping. When we talked to the owners ourselves, the lady there attacked us with questions about why we didn't leave if we had such a bad time (mainly because we are committed to the hotel through booking and can't cancel mid stay without a paying something - also we believed her staff when they said they are working to help us) and the man that was with her simply shouted at us to leave, opening the door and pointing our in an act of brutality I wouldn't wish for anyone to experience. It was obvious we couldn't talk to them as they guy kept shouting at us to leave in a very aggressive way which led us to believe he might actually cause us physical harm (at this point we only had one night left, and going to find a different hotel would waste our last day and probably cost a lot since they would see that we're desperate). In the end we had to accept their offer of less compensation than they offered at the start rather then wander around Madrid looking for another hotel for one night.
In conclusion - DO NOT STAY HERE! DO NOT CLOSE AN HOTEL THROUGH BOOKING! It might seem like booking is helping, but in reality they are only in favor of the hotel and you can always find matching prices in other websites if not lower. The hotel is not worth the money they charge (it's not super expensive, but not worth it by a long shot for this treatment).

Dear Paz: Thank you for taking the time to review us. It is a shame that your review is not as honest as we would like it to be. The Air Conditioning, as you well said, is a centralized system. Inside the room you could find a knob which controls the airflow of the AC into the room. We always turn it on during day and night, and especially when the costumer asks for it at the front desk. Every time you came to reception, we turned it on for you, even when other costumers told us that their room was too cold (keeping in mind we were in the middle of October). As far as the Wi-Fi goes, your description of the problem on the review does not match the complaint that you made here just one night prior to your departure. Stating that the Wi-Fi is “horrible at best” is far from the connectivity issue that you had, which was that you had poor signal when you sat up against the wall in bed. We are sorry that you had to sit on the side of the bed in order to catch full signal. Still, no matter how petty and insignificant this issue was, the person in charge tried for two hours (to no avail) to configure a wireless repeater so that you could work in bed while sitting up against the wall. Apparently your work lost priority to a stroll around Madrid moments later, while we stayed here and tried to solve your “absolute” connectivity issue. The bed is 1.35 meters wide, which we think is enough for a couple; in Spain this is considered a double bed. On Internet you can see the kind of bed which you would find inside the room. The Double Superior Room has one double large bed, the twin has two beds, and the double room has a standard double bed. Now, the comments on the towels are just too much. All are 100 % cotton, new, clean and dry towels and can dry you perfectly, without leaving residue on your body. What we see here is a plethora of unfounded complaints used only to coerce the hotel into returning your money, which we did. We are very disappointed, because we tried to exceed and make your stay as comfortable as possible. We hope you will understand it. Hostal Gala Madrid.

With 2 other friends, I stayed at a three-person apart-hotel (incl. kitchen) at Hostal Gala Madrid. It is located at the Plaza de Santa Domingo, which can't be more central and is a just mere walk away from all of Madrids main sights.

At first we couldn't find the entrance to the hostel since it is hidden away at the second floor of a building, which gives it some sort of a shady look. Nevertheless, as soon as we entered the reception, the kind receptionist made us feel at ease immediately and guided us to our room, which was on the third floor.

Despite the broken mirror and worn clausets, the room was impeccably clean and was cleaned daily. It even had rolling shutters. There was a sort of electrical perfume plugged in, which was a bit too much, but once you unplug it, the exaggerated vanilla smell disappeared quickly.

Breakfast can be taken for only 3,90 euros in the adjacent bar/restaurant, which is really a good price in Madrid!

Overall, Hostal Gala Madrid is a mix between a real hotel and a youth hostel, offering clean and bright rooms, good service with a big smile and an unbeatable location in the centre of Madrid for a really good price!

I would highly recommend the Hostal Gala in Madrid. It's great value for money - you get a functional, clean and spacious room in an unbeatable location. You can walk to all the tourist sites in Madrid, it's a few minutes from the main shopping strip and there are many great tapas bars nearby. There are a few metro stations within walking distance if you want to head further afield. Although the hostal is located on a busy street and there are many bars around, I did not find noise to be an issue and had a great night's sleep (this was in a room with a frontage to the street). The rooms are cutely decorated, each themed with a different city/country.

The hotel staff are friendly and can give you some great recommendations for things to do, restaurants and bars. We were also fortunate enough to get an upgrade from a double room to an apartment, which was fantastic - even more space plus private kitchen and laundry! The room are all upstairs but there was a lift so if you have bulky luggage, you won't have to lug these upstairs.

If you're looking for a functional and convenient place to sleep at night (this is not a fancy place), then I would highly recommend the Hostal Gala :)

My friend and I stayed here for 3 nights from 14 to 17 Jan 2014 , at a double-room with a private bathroom, for about EUR50 per night.

In terms of location, it was very conveniently sited near the Callao metro station which we alighted from after taking the metro from the airport. The Callao station is only a 5-7min walk away. There was also a supermarket located across the road on the left side of the Hostel. It was also walking distance to the Gran Via and most of the key sights via the metro stations.

My friend and I stayed on the second floor where the reception was located. The room was clean and there was clear effort to decorate it with a nice painting and matching wallpaper on one wall where the bed was. However, the entire room and the bathroom looked “tired” and old even though they had been painted over. Two small sachets of soap and clean towels were provided. A hair-dryer can be borrowed from the reception without any cost. Other than that, there was a small flat-screen television attached to the wall (mostly spanish free-to-air channels), a small wardrobe, 2 chairs and 2 charging sockets. Compli wifi was available but reception was patchy (we subsequently found out that the router was accidentally switched off which explained why the wifi was patchy for some periods of time) The room was small but since we didn't have much luggage with us, we have no complaints.

In terms of noise, it was relatively quiet during the time we stayed, even though we could hear some footsteps and voices through the door/walls.

The reception staff was friendly and helpful. They were able to arrange free walking tours that start near the hostel as well as taxis when we needed to get to the airport. However, because there is only one person on duty each time to assist guests to check-in and check-out/answer queries, do be prepared to wait a while if there are other guests before you as the staff patiently caters to them.

In terms of amenities, they do not have a pantry or kitchen (or at least not on the floor that I stayed at). There were 2 vending machines, one that sold snacks and the second one, hot drinks for a fee and that run at stipulated timings on the second floor, where the reception is located. In the morning, there is a small basket of cakes/biscuits for the guests. The lack of a pantry/kitchen didn’t trouble us since there was a supermarket nearby where we bought bottled water and snacks. There are also restaurants around the hostels so there wasn’t a need for us to prepare our own meals.

I did not give Hostel Gala Madrid full 5 stars because of the following:
(1)While it was easy to locate the Hostel building on Google maps, we had difficulty trying to get into the building itself as there were no instructions given to us beforehand. Turns out that one has to press a buzzer on the building (you have to press the buzzer that is labelled correctly for the Hostal) in order to gain access into the main door of the building. Within the building, thankfully, we bumped into other guests who informed us to go to the second floor where the reception was located. Otherwise, we wouldn't have known where or which level to to check-into. The building itself looked like an office buiding with other tenants, so be careful not to press the buzzer for the other building tenants! The other small "complaint" i had was that I find it impossible to open the main front door of the building with the key that was provided. However, and thankfully, my friend had less difficulty and was able to open the main door after he had mastered the "technique". Apparently, there is a certain angle to position the key and to turn it, in order to open the main door.
(2) The hostel building itself was rather old and they have installed sensor lights which I appreciate is more environmentally-friendly. However, these sensor lights have a tendency to switch off very quickly so it startled me the first time it happened and the entire building plunged into total darkness (there were no windows inside). To resolve this, you can try to find the light switch (but only turns on the light for a limited period fo time) or wave frantically at where you think the sensors are located to turn the lights on.

Other than the lack of instructions to gain access into the hostel building and the lighting issue, I find that Hostal Gala fits the bill for a decent place to stay at in terms of location, affordability, cleanliness (in spite of the rather old premises) and service in general.

We stay in a triple room, the room was nearby to the reception area.
The wall was so thin that we can hear what the people said in the reception area. It was quite noisy during the check in and check out time.
The room was too small for 3 persons, the room size was so tiny, it was smaller than a standard triple room. I think it's size seems like a single room or max for a couple in a double bed only. There is no space for the suitcase, we can't fully open it.
We had no extra space, every time when we get back to the room, we can only stay in our single bed.
Also the door lock of our room didn't work very well, everyday, we need to try many times to lock and open it.
I don't think I will stay here again.
The only Pos is location, it close to the Metro station.

I stopped with a group of 9 friends in the middle of June and didn't hear one complaint from any of them. (Ones a right moaner too)

Heard that if you were facing the street noise could be a problem but can't say I noticed anything.

Beds made everyday and towels changed. The rooms were spacious and clean and in general the whole hostel was spotless.

Staff were very friendly and helpful at all times.

Shop that sells everything you need on the same street. Bars across the road which were perfect for us while waiting for everyone to get ready.

Would recommend going to see Kev Gymage Lounge for a roof top bar and pool.

Tried a local restaurant too! It's called McDonald's and does excellent burgers.

Loads of bars and clubs and if I ever go back with a group I'll 100% be stopping here.

Also the showers were crazy good!

Dear Mike, We are glad that we have met the standards of your pickiest friends. Indeed, if you are at least a little used to city life and cars passing by every once in a while you should sleep perfectly fine. Those who are lighter sleepers can request a room facing the patio, which is completely silent. We hope to have you guys again soon. Best regards, Xurxo Hostal Gala
