Came here with the college for an overnight trip and we were very impressed with price, location and rooms. The location was right next to a metro stop so getting around the city was nice and easy and the rooms were beautifully simple with lovely little balconies to people watch.

Hostal Gala exceeded my expectations. I felt I got my money's worth and more. Thank you Hostal Gala. Here is my objective impression:
Pros:
Great location, close to transportation, restaurants, cafes, Gran Via, Sol
Clean
Shower is amazing, great pressure
Towels are great (i saw a review about them being bad, that is not true)
Good room size for European standards, quite surprised as usually rooms are way smaller
24h reception service
Free breakfast snacks
Good lighting
Comfortable bed
They attend to your needs and requests in a friendly and efficient manner (except for one instance, see Cons below): toilette was not flushing properly and they called a plumber right away and offered me to change me rooms if problem was not resolved in a timely fashion
Cons
Toilette was not working properly and I reported asap, at first the reception desk lady implied I may have done something, later after the plumber came they realized it was not me and profusely apologized---but I def did not like to be accused of something I did not do
Since it is in the center of Madrid it can be noisy

I made a reservation through trivago which routed me on to hostelworld.com for this property which was offering an "amazing" promotional price. DO NOT BELIEVE THEM. 5 minutes after I made my reservation and paid my deposit they called me and in a rude manner demanded that a mistake had been made in the system and that I either pay the full value of the room (14 times more expensive than the price I secured) or they immediately cancel the reservation. As with all bookings agencies I expected a booking guarantee. For example, if I make a mistake and buy the wrong flight tickets, noone will refund me for my mistake. ONCE AGAIN. DO NOT VISIT THIS PLACE. If this is how they treat their customers who have secured a reservation, imagine how they will treat you once you get there. Hostelworld on the other hand only said that they can refund my deposit (even though they promise that all bookings are guaranteed and that they are so confident of this, that if any problem arises they will credit you with 50$). This also never happened. THIS PLACE IS DECEITFUL AND PRACTICES IN MISLEADING MARKETING where they offer you a promotional price, and then corner you demanding something substantially higher when they know you have little to no time to secure another booking at a good rate.

As you must understand, 14 € for an apartment for five people in the center of Madrid is a highly unlikely thing to come across. It’s clearly an error. Of course, we understand that you are in your right to try to exploit it. We are sorry if you expectations were short lived. For the hassle, we offered you a rate of 100 € which was a 40 € discount. It is a shame that we could not find middle ground in the resolution of this issue.
As soon as you booked we called you to explain the error and offer a better price than those offered to the public. We don´t understand why you accuse us of contacting you at the last minute and not being able to find another place to stay since we called you two minutes after you booked.
I must say that this review is somewhat deceitful. We were never rude when calling you. Second, you should mention that the price that you booked at was 14 € so that the issue is clear to any other travelers reading this comment. The correct price that we informed you of was 140 €, which is 10 times more, not fourteen. It is a ten-fold difference, because it is missing a "0", because it is an ERROR. At no moment did we attempt to put out false advertising. If you look at any of the websites that we work with, you can see that the price on them is 140 €, except for the one you booked through which was obviously undergoing a technical issue.
We can, to a certain degree, understand why you are angry but we will not tolerate any threats or insults on your part through comments or private messages.

We booked the place for 5 nights but due to change of travel plan we had to leave on the second day. The front desk staff was quite friendly about our change and refunded 2 nights out of the 5 (we only stayed 1 night). If you need to cancel last minute or leave early, their policy is to charge for the next 48 hours.
The room is clean and modern looking. Our room had an ensuite bathroom but it's quite small, You can rest your chin on the sink in front of you when you sit on the toilet. The room has a small balcony looking out to the intersection and nice natural light coming in. It's only a minute away from the Gran Via street and 3 minutes walk from Plaza Callao. I would come stay again next time I am in Madrid.

It was unfortunate that you had to leave early. The 48 hour cancellation policy is in place so that rooms have at least 2 days to get reserved by someone else in the event of a late cancellation. We usually refund the difference to guest if another guest comes along and books the cancelled room. Unfortunately, this was not the case since the room did not get re-booked. Thank you for your understanding.
Overall, we are glad that your stay was good enough for you to want to come back and rest your chin on our sink again! Feel free to ask us for a room with a larger bathroom :)

I stayed at this hotel in April 2016, together with a group of 16 students. The rooms were big and the people at the reception had fantastic disposition to help.
It would benefit if it would include breakfast; however, they made arrangements for us to have breakfast at a cafe on the ground floor for an extra charge.
All in all great experience.
