I stayed at the Barcelona Mar Youth Hostel in June 2005. I stayed there for 4 nights and with 2 friends. We slept in an 8 beds mixed dorm room. In general I liked the place very much.

The room was cleaned every day and each bed had its own locker and light. The bed was comfortable and clean. The room was a bit small and we used it only to sleep, for there were other rooms to socialise and meet new people. What I didn't like was that, although they said so on their website, there were no power outlets in the rooms, so I had to charge my cellphone and cam in the socialising area and therefore be there all the time to have an eye on it. I'm not sure if other dorm rooms had them or if it was just ours.

Toilets and showers were cleaned every day, too. The toilets were very small, in fact it was a bit difficult to close the doors because of that. Showers could use an overall renovation but were very ok for a youth hostel and were cleaned every day. Hot water was always available.

In general everything was really very clean.

Staff was very friendly and kind at all times and really cared about us having a good time there.

Breakfast is included and was ok: Bread with jam, cereals, coffee, orange juice.

I rented sheets for 2,50 euros for my whole stay.

They have a fridge and a freezer where u can put your own food or drinks. They also have a washing machine but I didn't use it. There were 3 or 4 rooms where u can hang up your wet towels or clothes for drying.

They had 2 computers with internet access. 30 minutes = 1 Euro.

Inside the building I felt very secure, they have video surveillance in the hallways and only open the front door to people they know. You get a security pass and have to show it to staff every time u enter. You can't bring friends who don't live there. Dorm rooms can be locked and everybody gets a key. Outside, the area is not so good, there were some hookers, but no gangs or something like that, so we never felt unsafe. There's a police station not far away. From ramblas, the famous main street in Barcelona, it's a 5-10 minutes walk through a small street. During the night the street is a bit dark sometimes and there may be some people trying to sell beer or drugs to you, but they leave you alone if you say no. However, if u are travelling alone u might feel uncomfortable coming home at night and I recommend to stay at some other hostel or take a taxi. Groups are ok, even groups of girls. There were plenty of them and they didn't have any problems. During the day there's no problem at all and even girls travelling alone can feel safe.

Good hostel for backpackers.
We got the private twin room with bathroom '1B'

Good Stuff:
-Great location, in a lively bohemian street very close to la Rambla.
-Very friendly, young and trendy staff.
-Great atmosphere in Reception/Breakfast Area.
-Comfortable, clean and simple room, with A/C.
-Good WiFi reception.

Lame Stuff:
-The room is in another building far from the reception (a 100m zombie walk to get your coffee in the morning).
-The room is dark, with a window looking on a shaft.
-No shampoo or soap in room.

Overall, it was a very nice place, we wanted to extend our stay for a few nights more, but they were no more availabilities :(

I thank all the staff for their great Hospitality!

Beyond the nice and helpful polyglot staff (always ready to give you a great tip), that´s a clean and very well situated hostel, nearby the midle of Ramblas (despite this, I felt not so safe at night). The included breakfast isn´t the best in the surroundings but surprising for a hostel. The best hostel I´ve ever experienced.

This hostel, though located very close to La Rambla, is actually in the centre of the red light district (so dont even think you'll be out and about at night). In fact, the horrible location could even be considered to be a minor flaw amongst the other horrid features of this hostel. These include (but are certainly not limited to) the awful wifi (which they claim you can access in any room- no, actually you definitely cannot), the shocking state of the toilets- some of which you cannot lock and thus should be prepared for surprise interruptions, and probably the most awful tasting breakfast in Europe. When we found that we had powerpoints beside each of our beds we were very much relieved- though in an attempt to charge our phones found that actually- no, Be Mar did not have working powerpoints. Surprise, surprise- the admin let us know they may try and look at it in the next couple of days. FINALLY, if you are for some reason forced to stay at Be Mar, bring an icepack and little clothing- each room is its own woodfire oven and us travellers are nothing but tiny little pizzas cooking inside. Trust me, you never want to stay at this hostel- you most definitely will be disappointed. Dont let the cheap prices attract you- theres a reason they are "affordable".

My sister (22 yrs) and I (19 yrs) stayed in the be mar apartments April 2013. We are travelling around Europe and this was by far the worst of the places we stayed. The only good thing was location: train close by, that there was a wok to walk right next door and las ramblas very close.
The room was shocking. First the plates, glasses, cutlery, sink and bench were not cleaned and still had food stuck to them. Also one of the mugs was even broken and left in the cupboard. The fridge was barely cold and not working. The cupboard still had a mans shoes in it, I'm guessing the previous guest. The shower water starts off great but after about 2 mins goes cold and is shocking. The roof in the bathroom leaked everywhere, possibly because it was raining when we were there but either way it was always wet on the bathroom floor and toilet. We were only provided with two towels. No floor mat for the bathroom floor or tea towels for the kitchen. The bed sheets did not look like they had been cleaned either. The remote for the tv was missing also. Kitchen was tiny. Basically a small hallway. Street extremely noisy and couldn't sleep. There was a big fight between two other female guests in the middle of the night that sounded both physical and verbal which went on for hours ridiculously loud. The lift was not working when we arrived. Had to carry our suitcase up 4 flights of extremely narrow steep stairs because we were on the third floor. Lift when working doesn't even go to ground level, only level 1. The stair case was barely wide enough to bring our suit cases up and was very difficult. Staff member, cannot remember her name, was very rude to us when we informed her checking out of the issues with the room, did not care or even apologise in the slightest.

We thought this was an excellent hostel for the price (€16 a night with free breakfast)!
My fiancee and I stayed in the 16 person dorms. We all had our own little cubicle, with a locker and reading light. Security was good, with guests having to show a card at the door so you know only guests have access. The rooms were really clean, nice beds, plenty of hot water and a kitchen available too.
Nice big common room area, with free internet access on 3 computers and vending machines.
The staff were great, really friendly and helpful.
It was well located, just off Las Ramblas, with some cheap places to eat and supermarkets nearby.
We would definitely stay here again!

Worst hostel I've ever stayed in. The beds are just a thin piece of foam on top of a sheet of extremely noisy metal. They were extremely uncomfortable, and whenever anyone comes in the room and gets into bed, it's sure to be very loud. The bathrooms were absolutely disgusting. They were covered in mold, and the floors were constantly covered in huge puddles that spilled out into the halls. I could hardly sleep at all the first few nights I was there. I only was able to sleep a little bit the other nights because I was so exhausted by then. Our room had a few other rooms connected to it, so whenever anyone wanted to go back to one of those rooms, they had to open a very noisy door and pass through our room (usually quite loudly). The hostel's location was very convenient, but it was in a not-so-safe part of the city. To get to La Rambla, you had to go down streets where there were many prostitutes and drug dealers walking/standing around. The good things about the hostel were the free internet, the free (though not especially good) breakfast, and the common area, where we met some nice people. I would say that if all you plan on doing in Barcelona is partying all night, and you don't care about sleeping, then this is the hostel for you. If you'd like to sleep at all, though, don't stay here. I would never, ever go back.

I have just returned along with 3 friends from the worst stay of my life anywhere. The hostel is tiny and in the roughest area of Barcelona, the red light district off Las Ramblas, there was actually prostitutes outside our hotel. The rooms smelt of sewage and were uncomfortably small.
On the way home from a night out the man on reception wouldn't let us into the hostel, and we were attacked straight outside by a man who aggressively mugged my friend and stole everything on her. That is how terrible the area is. When we got inside (eventually) after pounding on the doors, the man on reception seemed completely unfazed and told us "it happens all the time" as if that meant it was acceptable. We asked him to call the police which he refused to do. He also refused to change our room even though the theif had run off with our room key which would have easily let him into the building and our room. The host was of no help all evening and made us feel completely unsafe, we wouldn't have been suprised if he was involved with the mugger. None of the security cameras had tapes in we were told. We would have checked out there and then but it was simply too unsafe to even leave the hostel. AVOID. THIS PLACE ISN'T JUST HORRIBLE, IT'S GENUINELY UNSAFE

I thought that this hostel was so much fun. The staff were excellent and very helpful when my friend and I had realised that we had not booked enough nights - they even arranged for us to have the same private room. It was such a friendly and social atmosphere. I would say go on some of the organised tours because they are a good way to meet ppl that are staying at the hostel and, of course, the sangrea always helps!

I'm looking forward to going back!

I've just spent three night at the apartments of Be Mar. Yes, they are a fair way down from the main hostel but closer to La Rambla which in my view was good :) I always felt safe with police everywhere. There are beggars and prostitutes in the lane but you just ignore them. My apartment had clean beds, a clean shower and toilet, sink and a kitchen. Working fridge to keep beers cold although we did have small bugs in the kitchen on the last night. Air con and shower worked perfectly. For what you pay you cannot be so precious and it was adequate for my stay.
