Stayed overnight at the B&B following a family celebration of life that occurred in Alliston. This was during covid-19 and the B&B was sparingly rented. We stayed in what I assume was the servants quarters - rooms 2, 4, and 5 on the 2nd floor above the dining hall. The rooms were cute and cozy. Each had a toilet room and sink and the shared showers were up the hall on the same floor. The beds were comfy and breakfast the next morning was delicious and filling and we enjoyed it on the grassy patio where the previous night we played boardgames we had brought and locals experienced the boutique drive-in. It was a nice break from city life! Can't wait to stay again.

My daughter and I enjoyed a Mother Daughter weekend at this lovely B&B along with the Spa services offered. Our room was the Elspeth Milne Room (queen bed) large bathroom with claw tub and toilet in a separate water closet. The decor of the home is old, antique and heritage. It’s like a museum. Stephen and Sue (owners) were amazing and ready to meet your any need. The grounds are lovely to walk and you are minutes from downtown Alliston. We will definitely be going back. I highly recommend staying at Stevensons Inn & Spa!

It is hard to believe that we slept in Mr. Lablaws summer estate! Super cool historical connection, lovely antique style furniture all set in a beautiful farm district. Coincidentally enjoyed a wonderful circus entertainment show on the lawn and a drive-in movie while we were here. Super helpful staff! Very personable and accommodating. Stayed in a beautiful room but was situated beside the front door which slams loudly every time guests come in and out. Beds are extremely comfortable! We love the quaint surroundings of this historical farm.

There are not many choices of places to stay in Alliston, Ontario. After having our worst B&B experience ever at the Stevenson Farms B&B, I would recommend staying anywhere else. Otherwise, prepare to waste a lot of time trying to figure things out on your own.

My husband and I had booked three nights here in May, 2009. We expected a farm experience so the old furniture in our room was no surprise. What was a surprise was how poorly the place was run and how many things were not working.

A relative drove us there, so we had no car and no phone of our own. When we arrived on the confirmed date, the place was vacant so we had to phone (with relative’s cell phone) the number posted on the door. There was no answer but just as we were about to leave, the proprietor showed up. She was confused about dates and thought we were arriving the next day. Fair enough - mistakes happen.

Their website advertises internet, air conditioning and in-room satellite TV.

- Heat is supplied by space heaters. The portable air conditioner / fan unit did not work. Luckily the room has windows that can be opened.
- The TV channel changer did not work (batteries were probably dead).
- I opened a drawer to find a former occupant's underwear inside. Did anyone check this room before we arrived?
- With no convenient place to set up our laptop we moved a lamp off a small shelf on a heavy piece of furniture and managed to get the plug into the socket behind it. The lamp was useless anyway as it did not have a light bulb.
- The internet was mostly not working during our stay. When we had to arrange a meeting time with the relative the next morning, we couldn't email and were unable to find a phone anywhere to phone out on. It was a good thing, I thought, that we didn't have a medical emergency. When we located the proprietor, she loaned us the use of a phone, but it was nowhere to be found the next morning when the internet was still down.
- The toilet plugged up with normal usage and we had to track her down to fix it. Later, when we ran out of toilet paper we had to take some out of a vacant room. (We were the only ones there on the first night so the other rooms were vacant.)
- The water in the bathtub was gritty and I noticed the white towels had orange stains on them.

When we returned after being out all day, I was surprised that the room had not been straightened up. The bed was still unmade and the bathroom untouched.

The breakfasts were good, although the hot breakfasts were put on too late for us so we never had one.

After two nights we'd had enough and told the proprietor we were checking out. A rate of $135 a night is unrealistic. We had paid only $25 more at the Royal York in Toronto a few days before. She gave us a 10% discount for the internet problem but didn't ask for details when I mentioned that a number of other things were not working.

The night before, two other guests had arrived at the B&B. In the breakfast room one of them asked if it was our toast in the toaster. I said no as we hadn't had any toast that day or the previous day. She concluded that it must have been left from some time before. "Yes, welcome to the Stevenson Farms B&B," I thought.

In brief, as a B&B it falls far short of what we would expect. The place needs a serious upgrade...plumbing, heating, air conditioning, internet and staff.

Response from WSMILNE, co-owner at Stevenson Inn & Spa

We are very sorry and saddened to read that this client’s experience was anything less than what they expected. We regret that the communication between us was not better during their stay as that would have eliminated many of the short comings in service that was experienced. We wish more of these issues were brought to our attention at the time rather than being voiced so harshly for the first time on Trip Advisor. These clients were asked directly why they were leaving - to which they curtly repeated the contents of the note left for us the evening before. "We did not meet their expectations, things weren’t working, and that were leaving". When we did see these clients during their stay - we instantly complied to any and all of their requests with respect and friendliness. How are we to know what is wrong - let alone fix it - if we are not told what else is wrong with our service? Like most B&Bs we do not have fulltime "staff", a front desk, or a 24 hour on-call concierge. Therefore we are not always instantly available. Sometimes we have to step out. We also try to respect guests' privacy. One of the biggest complaints people have of B&B owners is that they talk too much or hover over their guests which makes them feel awkward since they already feel like they are sharing someone else's home. We are never far away. We live in the B&B itself only 20 metres from our guests in a separate apartment. We have a door bell, two service bells in the dining room that are marked. We have a chalk board where notes can be left. And we have telephone and a cell phones on standby. I feel that summing up our B&B as "terrible, horrible and over-priced" with a zero rating for service and value is a very unfair and hurtful assessment of this client’s stay. We advertise as a historical farmhouse and bed and breakfast and on these main aspects of our business there is no merit what-so-ever. Rather it is the lack of a telephone, internet, laptop space and TV remotes that are the focus. How was the bed? How was the sleep? What did they have for breakfast? How was the historical atmosphere or view? Our furniture is not just "old" as described. The majority are antiques some of which have been in our family for 7 generations. They are not perfect but they are also not the faux replicas that are found in hotel chains. I am not disagreeing that these clients received less than perfect service. We apologize for not being there upon this guest’s arrival and some unfortunate errors and omissions in their room maintenance (the stained towel, the missing light bulb, the apparent pair of underwear we cannot excuse). We never did find the underwear but take the clients word for it. However, I would like the opportunity to offer explanations for the rest of their comments and criticisms. The window AC and TV remote were in working order. Perhaps I should have taken more time to explain how to use them. There are two remotes – one for the TV and one for the Satellite. Clients often mistake which buttons to press and accidently put the TV on the incorrect channel and it is no longer possible to change Sat TV channels. Our house is not just heated with space heaters. It is also heated with hot water radiators and wood burning fireplaces - both of which offer a wonderful comforting heat in the cold seasons. We turn our hot water systems off for the warm seasons and install space heaters so guests have control over your room temperature along with the window AC units. Guests also have the ability to open their windows which is luxury many hotels no longer offer. Perhaps it is not an automated air-conditioning system like in hotels but it still gives clients the choice to make it hot or cold or just breathe in the fresh country air. Overhauling our 175 year old house to install central air is both impossibly expensive, unnecessary, and would be very destructive to the historical nature of the house. The mysterious toast in the toaster these clients complained about was my own. I had made myself a slice and forgotten about that morning while making their breakfasts. Not only do we share our lives, our home and our history but we occasionally do share things like our kitchens and yes even our toaster. The intermittent internet was due to a wind storm the day before which had damaged our service provider's nearest radio tower . We discovered this out after it was brought to our attention by the clients. A service call was put in and they came as soon as possible from Barrie and repaired it. It came on again shortly after these guests checked out. Being in an rural area where we cannot get any service from regular providers such as Bell or Rogers it has cost us a great deal of money to bring in a special radio tower from Barrie so that our guests can enjoy it for free. The intermittent internet was out of our control and our service provider repaired it as fast as they could. Timing was unfortunate here and we did compensate for that. Regarding the plugged toilet. We have had thousands of guests stay here and I have perhaps unplugged a handful of toilets in our 10 years of operation. It is never a fun thing and always embarrassing for both parties. Toilets back up for one reason only. There is too much toilet paper put in them or the handle is not held down long enough for a proper flush. Two rolls of toilet paper are always installed in our rooms which is usually enough to last a week. In this case two rolls lasted less than 24 hours. Since I unplugged the toilet I can attest to the fact that it was not "normal use". Regardless, the problem was fixed right away with courtesy and respect. Regarding the gritty water. Because we are in the country we are on a natural well water system. It is filtered, UV sterilized and inspected tri-monthly by the health unit. Occasionally some grit or pipe scaling will come through the facets upon start up - especially if they have not been used for a few days or some air bubbles get in the system and cause it to dislodge. We understand that can be disconcerting but in a few seconds the water always runs clear again. For us it is small price to pay for enjoying bathing and drinking natural spring water instead of recycled municipal water that is full of chlorine and other chemicals. Regarding telephone. Clients were given the handheld unit to use and I do not recall what became of it after that. Normally it is based in our common guest room – only meters from the bedrooms. It was probably reset there by someone and I apologize for not showing them where to find it. I feel we have been unfairly compared to the Fairmount Hotel chain to which this client is obvious a frequent visitor. It is noted that we are only $25 cheaper than the Royal York where they had just stayed before visiting us. Does the Fairmont include all you can eat breakfasts? How expensive specifically are their breakfasts? Does the Fairmont include complimentary internet? Does it include parking? Do they allow you to cook your own meals in their kitchens? We a simple owner-operated B&B located in an underserviced rural farm area. We do not have in-house premium priced restaurants, bars, shops and room service surcharges where we hope to make additional money from clients. We allow our guests to bring and make their own meals and use our kitchen. We offer a peaceful, quiet, unique and intimate venue with a country view you can't get in the city. We also have much more economical rooms at our B&B but in this case they were declined. Regardless of everything we apologize again for not meeting this client’s expectations. Had we been more aware of their problems we would have fixed them. This is certainly a very rare case. In fact the other guests mentioned in this review that were staying on the second night had such a positive experience that they bought a two night gift certificate for the very room these clients vacated.

Stayed at Stevenson's over a weekend. The house was old, beautiful, and well maintained. The grounds are large and beautiful. Price was great. Bed was very comfortable and showers had plenty of hot water. Breakfast was amazing and filling. It felt like I stayed with family or friends for the weekend.

I have to recommend this place highly because we travel a lot and see all kinds of B&Bs - as a result when i find one with old charm and true graciousness in the hosts i like to tell people about it - this place is the real deal.

Because of it's historical uniqueness (the owner of Loblaws built the original house in the 1800s) it has a unique, peaceful feel that I can't say enough about. It's warm and the people truly nice. I give it a MUST rating.

We found this lovely B&B on the internet while searching for a place to stay in Alliston. From the booking stage through the entire stay, our hosts did a terrific job of making us feel welcome and comfortable. Both of us love older houses, so we feel at home with a creeky floor board or two and antiques around us. What we found when we arrived exceeded our expectations. The remarkable condition of the house, and the beautiful woodwork in the library and banquet room were very much to our liking. The overall feel is similar to a historical Inn that we once had the pleasure of staying in while visiting Niagara on the Lake.

The owners were very accomodating, but respectful of your privacy.

We woould definately recommend this establishment to our friends and family, and to anyone who loves the peace and quiet of the countryside and the historical surroundings of an old Inn. As a matter of fact we have already booked a room for 2012.

We held our wedding at Stevenson Farms B&B in August 2009. Right from the start of the planning process, to the day after the wedding (almost a year), the hosts at Stevenson's were more than helpful and accommodating. They helped us plan and execute our wedding in all ways possible. The help that the staff provided during the event, allowed us to experience a completely stress free day.

We had 80 people there the day of the wedding and we booked all of their 10 rooms and had 21 guests stay there overnight. All of the rooms were very clean and comfortable. The next morning the staff prepared a wonderful breakfast spread and all 21 of us sat down together to eat.

The house has a very interesting history and is filled with beautiful antique furniture. The house is very large, complete with a breakfast room, 10 bedrooms, a banquet hall and a parlour. It is situated just outside the quaint town of Alliston, ON on picturesque farm fields.

I would HIGHLY recommend this venue to anyone looking to hold an event and/or stay at a B&B. You won't be disappointed with your stay!

This lovely B&B inn exceeded our expectations in all respects. The owner greeted us at the door and gave a tour of this historic inn. The atmosphere is charming, cozy, and relaxing. Very welcoming. And all the old stuff is so interesting! In the sitting room, it's worth watching a video about the long history of the house and its resurrection as an inn by the current owners.

The bedrooms are smallish and very comfortably furnished with period furniture. Charming, with lovely views of the surrounding farmland.

Freshly baked muffins in the evening, and a delicious, hot, healthful breakfast in the morning was enjoyed in the good company of guests who obviously return over and over to Stevenson's.

Very happy to have found this place. I hear the owners wish to expand the rooms and combine them with a farm-to-table dining experience.... If the current approach is any indication, I'm sure the future holds something special for visitors to the inn.

Depends which room you booked. If it was on of the banquet rooms you have a private toilet and sink and there is a few private showers down the hall. If the room was the one of the others (Jean, elspeth or william) they are completely private and have a full bath room. Either way it is a beautiful place. We booked the entire place for our wedding and all our guest enjoyed their stay.
