We are group of 5 adults with one toddler in tow, stayed there for 2 nights over Christmas..each of us enjoyed the place, the views, the facilities. Lori and Tom were amazing! We hope to go back for a slightly longer stay this time around.

It was an excellent stay. Very secluded and quiet. There is a lot of forest to walk through and a place for kids to play. My family and I really enjoyed this place and it was great for fishing, swimming and games. I am going again this July!

We stayed in the Honeymoon Suite for just 2 short nights and wished we had booked a whole week. The Suite was perfect for us and the breathtaking setting was the best antidote to the soulless city-based hotels we visited on our way around Canada.

We spent a whole day on a pedallo on the lake, visiting the beaver lodge and eating lunch on the picnic-bench deck which has been anchored on its own in the middle of the water. It was paradise, and I was so sad to have to leave.

If you visit on a clear day take Ted and Mary (your friendly and welcoming hosts) up on the offer of a star-gazing bonfire at night - you will be amazed by the number of stars you will see from their waterside decks - we were speechless.

I would highly recommend this wonderful retreat (and as someone who never goes below a 4 star hotel, it is a good recommendation!!)

After driving over 1,000 miles and anticipating a "cottage" as stated in the advertisement I was shocked to find one huge building divided into sections. The place was hot, dark and very unappealing. The walk down to the water was steep and dangerous. One of the sections had matresses on the floor and a toilet in the room without walls around it. To me it looked like "Gunsmoke". I have spent many summers at resorts and have never come across anything like this before. There was no place to sit outside - no green space. It probably would do for people who really like woodsy settings but when you have children they need a place to play and a safe beach without drop-offs.

Sorry to hear your concerns. You had asked to cram extra people into the two cottages you rented (over our recommended amount). I went out of my way to put a mattress down on the floor for the kids to sleep on. I was quite surprised you are complaining over us bending the rules for your group??? Our cottages are up on a hill over looking the lake. It is not a terribly steep path. My father in his 80's climbed down and up it many times! We have always advertised this as a 4-plex. No surprises there. We have a small field for kids to play on. I'm not sure how you could have missed seeing that. We have had decks on all the cottages since the day we opened - with Muskoka chairs. We are in the woods though and if you prefer the subdivision of small box cottages at a major beach it's best to book there.

A large group of friends and myself rented two of the cottages for the weekend recently. Upon arrival the beautiful cottages were warm and inviting and the owners friendly. After asking us all to write our names on a piece of paper and collecting our rental fee we settled in for the weekend, not expecting to see the owners again until we left on Sunday morning. Now as a disclaimer I need to note that we are a rowdy group, but as we are all in our late 20s and 30s and the majority homeowners we would never damage property or treat a resort with disrespect, but we are going to have winter wear drying on chairs after playing in the snow and the odd beer can on the deck, however if we had been given until check out, we would have left the cabins with all of our gear and our garbage in bags. Instead of waiting until Sunday to see the owners again, they were constantly 'popping in' to check on us. I felt like I was a teenager staying at my friend's parents cottage. I understand coming to shovel snow or drop off more dish towels, towels and garbage bags (which did not happen and would have been awesome). Instead the female owner would just walk in without notice, checking in on us it seemed or complaining such as we had too many people in the hot tub (which they chose to shock the second day of our trip (instead of prior to our visit) leaving several members of our party with rashes and burns) or we were throwing our cigarettes over the balcony (our group was blamed, while in fact it was the other party next door, as our group was not smoking cigars), comments about wet socks in the bathroom etc. Our check out took longer then planned because the other group renting the other two cottages got stuck in the drive way after freezing rain the night before. Knowing this, the owner still kept trying to do a walk through several times despite us explaining that we were working on leaving and that our departure had been delayed by waiting for the other group to leave before being able to access our cars. Our final inspection went well, however there were still complaints about the clean dishes being in the rack instead of put away (because we had been given one dish towel for the weekend). Over all, the place was great, very nice and we had a great time, but the owners need to give groups space. If we need anything we will call. And you need to call ahead or knock every time when someone is paying to rent your cottage for the weekend. Even though we are a large group we are entitled to our privacy.

Yes our location is a beautiful retreat in nature. We have hosted many large groups (weddings, family reunions, school reunions) who have given the environment and the property the respect it deserves. We don't discourage people from having fun or enjoying what we have to offer here. We are quite sensitive to giving guests the space to enjoy themselves. What is discouraged is: - Throwing cigarette butts and garbage on the decks and all around - Having 14 people in a 9 person hot tub, emptying half the water and forcing the hot tub to shut off in minus double digit weather. (Only 2 individuals had the respect to tell us the truth and were there to help remedy the situation). - Having glass bottles, cigarettes and food in the hot tub, - Urinating around the hot tub and on walkways. - Having a food fight inside and outside the cottages - Wasting furnace oil and firewood by constantly leaving the front door and back window open. I'm sorry to say we both did not have the best experience. I'm sure all the people in your group were not being thoughtless, it only takes a few.

It's my second time here. The setting is beautiful and the cottage is settled far enough into the woods that there's a feeling of needed isolation. The cottage itself is divided into three separate cottages. I've only stayed in one of them and it is quite nice. What I find lacking, though, is the amount of care the owners put into the basics. They supply all the dishes you might need for eating while you're there, but they don't have one frying pan. And the dishes were dirty. When we went to wash them (we had to go buy our own dish detergent), we found that the washing and drying cloths were filthy. We chose instead to use paper towel. And there was mould in the grooves of the drying tray, as well as inside the coffee maker. The place has such potential, but the owners need to invest in some small details and a bit of elbow grease to keep the place acceptable. I'll probably go back, but it's unfortunate that I'll need to bring a frying pan and some bleach.

In addition they have a row of canoes and kayaks that you can take onto the lake, but inside they are filled with stagnant water, webs, insects and dead leaves. If I owned the place I would have those things cleaned out before new guests arrived.

I like the place. I think it could just be so much better.

Hello Derek, I'm sorry to hear of this experience. We host many large groups that rent all 4 cottages. Once in a while we miss putting back a frying pan or other utensil that the group has moved to another cottage as many large groups like to cook together. Some cottages have the dish detergent built into the sinks and guests don't always realize it and move the dish detergent dispensers around. A quick phone call to us would have corrected this. We always stress to everyone when they arrive that we are at their disposal and to contact us if they have any questions or concerns. We supply all the bedding and towels and wash them every time someone leaves. We also supply extra drying towels in drawers or on shelves depending on which cottage you are at. We occasionally have had some guests stay overnight and not use the kitchen or use the kitchen in another cottage with a multiple cottage booking and they tell us what they have used and not used so that we save the environment by not washing clean items. As far as the boats go, these are stored outside. It takes no time for a spider web to show up. It's all part of nature. They are used so often that usually this isn't an issue. We do have to be more strict on the use of boats as many do not return them to the racks upside down as they found them. Thank you for your feedback we will take your comments to heart.

My husband and I, plus a large group of our friends went to The Sundog Retreat to spend a wonderful weekend away from the city. For those of you who enjoy a truly secluded lakefront setting, fresh air, hiking trails, breathtaking scenery, and beautifully charming accommodations, then this place is for you!

The Sundog Retreat opened its doors only this past year, so be prepared to be absolutely delighted by the choice of four (soon to be five, I believe) individual suites that have their own unique character. They range from a homey, country look with natural log railings to a more modern, open-concept chalet-style suite with cathedral ceilings and a loft. The suites are fully equipped with all the bedding and bath linens that you'll need. The kitchens have a full-sized oven, microwave, coffee maker, toaster, dishes, cutlery, etc., so all you need to bring is food, clothing, and personal items. There was even a jacuzzi tub!

The property is directly on the waterfront, with two docks and a raft for some fun swimming. The water is very clean, and there is canoeing, kayaking, and pedal boating available. You can go all around the lake in these, or hike up to some pretty waterfalls. Our group of friends have been to many places together and this is by far our favourite!

This place is undoubtedly one of the best places to visit in the Parry Sound area. This region is unbeatable with its stunning scenery, with lots of nature parks along Georgian Bay to venture into as well.

For those of us who cannot afford our own cottage, this is truly the best thing there is. The rates are very reasonable. You will be glad you went!

My family of six enjoys traveling and discovering new and exciting places to stay. Some of the places that we've stayed have been "exciting", but not pleasantly exciting! We were delighted with our stay at the Sundog Retreat--retreat being the operative word. Although we were not far from town, it felt like we stepped out of the rush and into the serene. The lake is peaceful, the cottage is beautiful and our experience was incredible. We were thrilled with the friendliness of Ted and Mary, the owners. We had an instant connection. They made us feel so comfortable and welcomed our four children, (ages ranging from 2 through 19). We had plenty of things to do, we could kayak, canoe, swim, paddleboat, lounge in the garden, hike, and if we felt like it, we could venture in to Parry Sound and take in some of the more "touristy" things. What an escape! My husband also took advantage of an awesome massage--both Mary and Ted are massage therapists. I ended my vacation refreshed and relaxed, ready to face the world again! This is a great vacation if you just want to rejuvenate! I highly recommend it!

We just came back from a weekend at SunDog Retreat, March 11 & 12, 2005. Everything about our experience was positive, from the booking to the time we (regretfully) had to leave. Mary and Ted are wonderful hosts, and the cottages are perfect. In an email before we arrived, Mary asked our expected arrival time, and they had lit the wood-burning stove before we got there!
We stayed in the Knotty Pine suite, which was beautifully decorated in a blend of different types of natural wood. It was both cozy and spacious at the same time. The suite has a kitchenette, with a decent sized fridge and stove, a microwave, coffeemaker, and all the cookware and utensils you would need. The bedroom is upstairs, with a very comfortable king-size bed. Outside, there's a screened in porch that's shared with the suite next door, with plenty of firewood and even a BBQ! A short walk from the suites is a brand-new 9-person outdoor hottub. When we were there, only one other suite was occupied, so we had the hottub to ourselves one night.
One of our favourite features of the SunDog Retreat is the serenity and the peacefulness. It's located a about 1 km off the next road, with only a few other cottages on the lake. We went shoeshoeing on the lake Saturday afternoon for about 3 hours, and didn't hear or see another person - not even any footprints! Also, since there are only 4 suites, it would be a very private resort even when they're all occupied.
Everything is very clean and well cared for. We highly recommend SunDog Retreat to others, and will definately be going back ourselves some day!

Ted and Mary are the owners and are really kind and friendly people. We stayed in the Knotty Pines cabin and loved the natural setting (both outdoors and indoors). All the tables and stair railings and bedposts are made from finished raw tree branches. The gardens outside are gorgeous and the lake is tranquil and clean.

Just two hours north of the big city and only 15 min from the small town of Port Parry. Enjoyed the stay tremendously!
