Nestled in the heart of Banff, the Mount Royal Hotel garners praise for its prime location and stunning mountain views, according to many guests. While opinions on the hotel's value for money are mixed, the rooms are often lauded for their cleanliness and modern atmosphere. The rooftop hot tubs stand out as a highlight, despite some remarks about limited amenities. Though some travelers experienced noise disturbances and service inconsistencies, the majority appreciate the friendly staff and inviting communal areas.

Cosy hotel with great facilities in the heart of Banff. Close to everything in downtown Banff. Attentive and thoughtful staff. Loved the fact it was a stop for both Lake Louise and Sunshine Ski Hills and had secure facilities for ski and board storage.

We traveled to Banff staying at the Mount Royal for 2 weeks skiing with Virgin Holidays. The hotel has been renovated within the past couple of years with an understated contemporary, stylish design & good range of facilities. It’s well managed & run quietly & efficiently. Staff are friendly & helpful. Rooms are spacious with a very well appointed bathroom & super comfy beds. The heating is easily adjustable so we didn’t have any problems with being too hot / cold which can often be the case in large hotels in Winter. The fridge is useful to store milk for tea / coffee. We had a problem with our coffee maker upon arrival but it was dealt with immediately with a replacement provided within minutes. Our room was on the front above Banff Avenue which can get noisy at weekends but it didn’t trouble us at all (earplugs are thoughtfully provided but we didn’t need to use them). The waste plug in our bath didn’t function properly & this was never resolved despite mentioning to reception several times but the shower was super & we tended to use the expansive rooftop hot tubs to sooth muscles & warm up after a day of skiing. I’m sure if we’d been more insistent about the bath it would have been resolved. The hot tubs & service at the roof top bar was also great but it feels more could be made of this area, a beautiful spot to chill out & enjoy the views from the bar. Worth mentioning is that the hot tubs can be a bit harsh & drying on the skin, no doubt due to the chemicals necessary to keep them clean. Bath robes are provided so you can shower in your room or in the showers adjacent to the hot tubs but it’s worth showering immediately upon getting out of the tub before sitting around in the bar in your bath robe sipping your beer - even if you go back into the tub, otherwise the drying effect of the hot tub can play havoc with your skin. We used the bar downstairs, again great service, but didn’t get around to visiting the restaurant. Best of all this hotel couldn’t be better located with the bars & restaurants of lovely downtown Banff a few steps from the front door & the ski storage & buses to Norquay, Sunshine & Lake Louise a few steps from the back door. We had a super holiday & enjoyed every moment thanks to Virgin Holidays & all the staff at the Mount Royal.

We stayed here for our anniversary recommended by our friends! Such a great place to stay! We paid $258 for two nights which came with free breakfast at tony romas (worth $25per person...it’s a Alberta resident specialty if you book through there website!

I really enjoyed the location! We came at a time that was-35C to -45C. So having everything close by walking distance was awesome!

Our rooms were modern and so clean! Came with bathrobes. We tried the rooftop pool at night and was really nice!

I really enjoyed our stay! Would def recommend this to everyone!

We have stayed at this hotel many times over the past 30+ years and this was our first visit back after the renovations from the fire. We had expected some "glamour" or up scaled ambiance, but its just the same old Mt Royal with fresh new rooms. The rooms are small but clean (newly renovated). There is not much space to set anything on like a shelf in the bathroom or the tiny desk. No microwaves any more. Kettle and Nespresso coffee machine. Staff was courteous and efficient - seemed more prepared for Japanese guests. The lobby is small, with only a front desk. There's no grandeur with this hotel. Just a clean room, downtown Banff. The new hot tub was a disappointment, small - two 6 person tubs - very shallow and loaded with chemicals. The area around the tubs was super icy and slipping was a big concern. There are 460 rooms here and only 12 people can use the hot tub. If we go back we won't bother with the hot tubs again.

Dear vball_canuck, Thank you for your review. We are proud to be an affordable yet modern hotel in Banff's downtown district. Our hotel is pleased to cater to guests from all over the world, and throughout our social media you will see fantastic comments about the service we strive to deliver to our guests. Our 133 rooms and public spaces - completely renovated after our 2016 fire - offer a clean, contemporary feel throughout our property. We also have a microwave available at the front desk for guests to warm up their food. I am disappointed that you did not better enjoy the hot tubs as they are one of our most highly mentioned amenities that we offer - and thank you for bringing to our attention about the area around them - it will be dealt with. We hope to welcome you back to our hotel again on your next visit to Banff! Regards, Norm Duchaine Guest Services & Experience Manager

Hotel location can’t be beat - it’s in the town centre and all the restaurants and shops are next door. That also means there is some noise due to nearby bars and partying. We were woken up by rowdy guests yelling in the hallway at 2am, obviously no fault of the hotel’s but just drunk and inconsiderate guests. Room and bedding was clean and comfortable. Parking is limited and first come first serve - front desk was helpful in securing a spot when we checked in. Room cleaning has to be requested every morning if needed - we didn’t require it every day but it is a little inconvenient. There are some minor things that could be improved on but overall had a good stay.

Thank You for your review IsrafelR. We are glad you had a good stay with us. Couldn't agree more that being at the downtown core has its perks and downside especially on peak season when Banff is "alive" and teeming with visitors excited to be out and about as covid restrictions are lifted. The hotel is actively looking for ways to eliminate the inconvenience of requesting for stay over service and we are truly grateful for your understanding. We hope to see you back to our beautiful town in the future! Kind Regards, Anthonette Carasco Front Office Manager

Pro:
Location, location, location. It is on Banff Avenue which is where all the shops and restaurants are.
Rooms are clean, and modern
Bathrooms are large as is the shower
Very good WiFi

Cons:
Lobby is small, so can get crowded during check in
Elevators are small (hint there is another elevator near the back entrance - it is not nearly as busy as the lobby elevator)
Rooms do not have much history to them (considering this is a historical hotel)
There was lots of parking when we were there, during mid week, but it could be a problem during busy times.
Room overlooked a roof which had a bunch of equipment that hummed all night.
Paid extra for a view room, not sure it is worth the extra price.

Conclusion:
There is nothing really wrong with this hotel, so if the price is right the location can not be beat.

Hello iluvfrance, Thank You for your review. It was a delight reading a comprehensive recap that is on point. The hotel's history is actually showcased on the hallways and the compact museum we have at the lobby. The rooms are designed to have the modern vibe for guests' convenience. As for the view room mentioned, we'll definitely have a look on it as the humming issue had never been brought to us before. Thank you once again for your review and we hope you enjoyed your time in gorgeous Banff! Kind Regards, Anthonette Carasco| Front Office Supervisor

There really isn't much to be faulted with the Mount Royal. The rooms are comfortable and a good size and generally, the service was excellent. The rooftop hotubs are a nice feature, especially after a solid day of skiing!

The best thing the Mount Royal has going for it is its location - not only centrally located on Banff Ave (restaurants and shopping) but perfectly located for the free shuttle to the ski slopes at Sunshine, Lake Louise and Norquay. The 'No 2' bus pickup point is in the carpark at the rear of the hotel so getting to the slopes in the morning is as simple as collecting skis from the free storage room and walking about 20 metres to the pickup point. The added bonus here is that the No 2 route is MUCH less busy than the No 1 route so it's no issue getting a seat.

The hotel was great, staff was kind and always helpful (Especially Tom - the waiter for breakfast!)
The room was clean and the only problem I had was the window seal was possibly broken or something as a cold draft emanated from the windows even when shut.
The water in Banff is quite hard so your hair feels weird and the air is incredibly dry so you will need moisturiser and chapstick.

Banff is a beautiful place but it has a few downsides, firstly a lot of the stores are tourist traps selling the exact same stuff, so there is only a day that you can spend "shopping" in Banff if that is your thing.
Secondly, it can be quite expensive although this was unexpected.
Finally, if you are looking for the authentic Canadian experience, Banff may not be the best place as the majority seem to be non-native Canadians with a large majority of people working there being Australian, New Zealand and Scottish.

The best thing about this hotel is its locality, it is absolutely perfect.
The worst thing about this hotel is that it could do with some more hot tubs as it often caused people to line up for a spot in the hot tub (there are two hot tubs with 6 people each allowed... and yes, this is managed by staff)

Two night stay as part of a tour group. Fairly large room with plenty of power sockets, a safe, Fridge, Kettle, Coffee machine, Iron & Hairdryer. All good so far. However we were allocated a disabled room (206) and although the bathroom was quite large the shower curtain was pretty useless. It wasn't wide enough for the size of the shower enclosure and as there wasn't a step to contain the water the bathroom floor flooded and we had to use all our towels to mop up to avoid any accidents. On asking reception if we could have a fresh supply as we were staying 2 nights we were told our tour operator hadn't paid enough for us to have housekeeping. (This was actually resolved by our tour director but the receptionist was quite unsympathetic towards us) Being part of a tour group does make you feel like a second class citizen. Our breakfast was in a small conference room with minimal offerings. (No cereals, limited supply of fruit and yogurt which is not replenished once it has run out) If you don't eat cooked breakfast or croissants you are are out of luck! There was a toaster but no bread!!
When my wife complained at reception about the breakfast she was met with a smug grin and no reply.

We visited Banff for the first time and was booking purely off blogs and reviews. The reviews for this hotel had me concerned about noise going in, but I was hooked on the location so we went for it. Many mentions of ear plugs needed, rowdy crowds walking by, etc. I’m not sure if its because we were there in July or maybe we’re the night owls, but I heard nothing other than an occasional door slam from a neighboring room. I did request an upper room and we were facing the parking lot area, but much further down the street than you’d imagine. I think the rooms extend over some of the shops on Banff ave.
That said, this hotel is located in the heart of Banff, with restaurants, shops, stores and bars within walking distance. The staff is incredibly nice and helpful. The rooms are nicely appointed. We had a small suite with a living area, and kitchenette with microwave, refrigerator and sink and then a bedroom. It was modern and tastefully decorated. And clean!! Not only was our room clean, but walking in and out of the hotel each day, I could smell the powerful cleaners being used by the housekeeping staff while sanitizing/cleaning the rooms between guests checking out and checking in.
I’d highly recommend this hotel, as I’d be hard pressed to stay anywhere else when I return to Banff.
