Places to stay are graded on a 0-100 scale. The higher the grade, the easier it is for travellers to find restaurants and things to do within walking distance.
We had a wonderful stay La Playa Resort! Yes, St. Martin got battered badly during Hurricane Irma and there are areas, especially here on the French side, that still show signs of this. La Playa however, is not one of those places. The grounds are kept immaculate, the pool is sparkling clean, the beachfront is spectacular and very well maintained. Construction seems brand new and the rooms still smelled of fresh paint and furniture when we arrived. Everything was are impeccably clean, cleverly designed and the rooms sport a beautiful ocean view. Ours had a cute kitchenette complete with all cooking essentials, a 2-burner stove and a large fridge all hidden behind louver doors. The room was airy and spacious, with ample closet and dresser space. It also sported a cozy balcony and blackout curtains. Breakfast is included and served under a large tent directly on the beach and offers something for everyone - various breads and croissants, fresh fruit, yogurt, cold cuts and cheeses, coffee, tea, eggs cooked to order and you can also order a variety of custom coffees such as Cappuccinos and Lattes. There is a bar on premises and you can order drinks from there while hanging at the beach. Albeit suprisingly so it closes at 5 p.m.! There are however several quality restaurants and a few bars in the immediate vicinity, along with a well stocked grocery store, a liquor store, a pizza place, a taco shop, a beach store and other vacation village type of businesses. Along the beach and only a short walk away one can find a kite surfing school and a jet ski rental. The only things worth of note in my opinion are, that the beach faces the Atlantic Ocean side of the island and is quite windy, which results in somewhat rough surf, and I would not necessarily recommend it for people with small children. Also, if you plan on doing some exploring, I highly recommend renting a car as this is not an area connected to a town and as such, entertainment and activities are somewhat limited. We however greatly enjoyed our stay and are already planning our return.

We stayed at LaPlaya for two weeks in January 2020 with another couple and will plan a trip to this awesome resort again. We loved the location of the hotel, right on the beach. It was easy to walk to our room to use the restroom or pick up something that we forgot to take to the beach. No need to get in a car to drive to the beach as many of the properties in Orient Village need to do.
Breakfast was included and delightful in the outdoor restaurant. I cannot say enough good things about the wait staff. They were pleasant, worked fast and hard, and literally "ran" to the cute Airstream kitchen to pick up our meals. Monon was our favorite!
The beach boys were also the best I have ever come across in the Caribbean. They did an awesome job with the beach chairs, umbrellas, delivering drinks and food as well.Jerome was our favorite!
Our room was spacious, modern, with a terrific balcony. We had a little kitchenette that was perfect for our needs.Julian, the bellman/do anything staff was so kind and pleasant. We asked many questions and he was always willing to help us.
The landscaping is lush around the property.
You can tell that the property has been updated quite nicely since hurricane Irma.
We will return to this property for sure.

Following Hurricane Irma in 2017, La Playa has nicely renovated this boutique hotel, essentially right on Orient Beach, and a few hundred feet from the Village replete with excellent French Restaurants and Bars. The management team and staff at La Playa couldn't be friendlier or more helpful. We stayed at this resort last week, spent restful days on the beach and enjoyed wonderful dinners just steps from the hotel at the small village. It was a great vacation.

We just spent 9 nights at La Playa. This was our third time to this hotel, but first since Hurricane Irma basically destroyed St Martin. The major renovations completed on the hotel are incredible. The rooms are very nice, large, bright and the hide away kitchen is ingenious. Breakfast on the beach every morning was excellent. They have over 150 beach chairs if I estimated correctly and we never had trouble getting two chairs and an umbrella over looking the beautiful water. The hotel couldn't be closer to the beach and has an awesome location near the middle of Orient Beach.
The staff was tremendous! The restaurant staff really hustle and almost run to get your food quickly all while keeping a cheerful demeanor. We were happy to still see Katy at La Playa. She does and excellent job running this tremendous hotel.
Our only disappointment was having to leave the hotel to come home.

I found this place based on all the other reviews, and they didn’t disappoint. At check in the staff is very friendly and informative. The whole process was a breeze. There is someone at the desk throughout the night and also security at night so it’s very safe. The hotel is right on the beach so it’s very convenient and beach towels are provided. I would recommend trying to get there a little early as it can get crowded. The grounds of the hotel and very immaculate and well maintained. You can tell the groundskeepers take pride in their work and do a fantastic job. The room I had was junior suite premium garden. Everything was updated and the room was decorated beautifully. The bed was very soft and comfortable. The room also has a cool feature were you can close the terrace, automatically with the touch of a button. The housekeeping staff is amazing when they clean your room it is spotless, I hope they are commended for their hard work. Also if you need extra towels, washcloths etc. They are always in arms reach so don’t hesitate to ask.The Food at the beach bar was delicious I’d recommend teriyaki chicken. You can also have food and drinks delivered to you on the beach. The bar has some really good drinks and they do not skimp on the alcohol so make sure to tip well! The overall location of the hotel is perfect because it’s in walking distance of several restaurants and shops. I really enjoyed celebrating my birthday here and I will definitely be coming back sooner than later!

The good: The beach bar / restaurant / beach service was outstanding. Some of the best we've ever had. All of the employees are young French people that are happy to help with anything. They are so cheerful, and the service is quick and very good.
Sadly, the hotel is not as nice. The reception staff is rude. Our room was very average - similar to a Holiday Inn Express. We had one of the best rooms in the hotel which had a side view of the ocean. There are not any direct ocean view rooms. I don't think a first floor room would be able to see the ocean over the neighboring property. Our direct view was of debris on a neighboring piece of land and the ocean beyond that.
You are given one beach towel at check in - not at the beach. You guard this towel with your life. You have to sign a special "towel payment" form if it's lost. We asked for an extra towel and we were told it is a strict one towel per customer policy.
The room was not kept clean. There were ants in the bathroom. Bathroom products were not replaced / refilled.
The location is the best on Orient beach. Numerous restaurants and a small grocery store are all within 1 block.
The solution: have the beach club manager run the hotel.

We have just returned from 10 days at this small hotel. It is right on the beach, beach towels and sun loungers and sun umbrellas are included in the price. Each room has adequate cooking facilities including kettle, microwave, plates and cutlery. The rooms are cleaned each day and are very lean. It was damaged in the hurricane Irma in September 2017, and has been extensively renovated. Breakfast is included and is taken under a tent structure on the beach. All the staff are very friendly, Manon and Damian at breakfast are great fun. Patricia and Julian are very helpful in reception. The hotel manager is Katy, who is most helpful and is delightful. The nudist beach is 10 minute walk along the beach, we have booked again for next year. Richard James UK

La playa orient bay is a beautiful hotel, it is not very big, which makes it much more intimate and pleasant. The staff, especially Katye, Elizabeth, Catherine, Elena Julian and Alex are super friendly and helpful. The breakfast is amazing , the beach is gorgeous. The tide is a bit strong (just a bit) so I recommend you to bring or buy pool noodles and you will be way more comfortable. The food is delicious and the service on the beach is very good. (I would take Tumblers so that the drinks you order stay cold, tips must be given in cash). Keep in mind that the service on the beach ends at 5pm, you can stay, but the chairs, umbrellas and waiters will not be available after 5 pm. However, you can use the pool, which, although it is not very spacious, it is clean, beautiful and pleasant. Remember that the island is “European” so don't forget to bring your power converters. The hotel is located on the French side of the island (which I think is a better option since everyone is way more friendly that on the Dutch side) Rooms are beautiful and clean, with microwave, coffee maker, dishes, fridge, a daily bottle of water, silverware and some of them have a kitchenette. If you can rent a car and get to know other beaches (Maho beach is a great experience) go for it. At the front desk, everyone is very friendly and willing to help you with the car rental and with plenty of suggestions for visiting beaches, places to eat and visit. There are restaurants and shops very close to have dinner or buy anything you need. (Walking distance, no more than 3 minutes) It is important that you check the dates of your trip, since the hotel and several others close for a few days during September. Don’t forget to being mosquito repellent and mosquito bites remedies. In general, my experience was very pleasant and I will surely return. My only suggestion for the hotel is to put shower curtains because the style of the bathroom is without curtains and the water sprays all over the bathroom. Overall, we loved the hotel, the beach, the island, everything!! I highly recommend this hotel. Thanks to all the staff for an unforgettable vacation, we had so much fun!

You can feel that this hotel was rebuilt with love and a nice decoration touch after hurricane Irma. All its facilities, room, beach restaurant, beach chairs and lounges are brand new with a warm beach touch and really modern. The rooms are very comfortable modern beautiful and with all the services required. The staff is really friendly and make you feel relaxed. The service of the beach is charming with nice menu of drinks and food on the beach. Seafoods and poke are excellent options for snacks in front of the beach. The location is perfect if you don’t want to rent a car. One of the best Beaches in SXM, many options for food and services at walking distance. The manager who attend us is so friendly! We will come back for sure!

La Playa’s location right on the beach cannot be beat. The bar and breakfast outside are very pleasant. Excellent bread and pastries. Service is generally very good too (our late arrival was an unfortunate exception to that). The rooms are modern and well-appointed, with the basics - beds and bathrooms- being clean and comfortable. Overall, we would come back. Not giving 5 stars, since some improvements could be made: toiletries are of the kind that do not wash very well, there’s no clothes line or some kind of rack for dryer bathing suits and daily service could include bottled water for the price of the rooms. As well, a variety of foods at breakfast could be increased, as the food selection gets tiring after a week, for example bananas, muesli or oatmeal, coconut, omelette, etc.
